Yorkie poo reverse sneezing very, very frequently
 

Have 2 yorkie poos, brother who reverse sneezes several times or more a week and his sister that had only done it once or twice before today.

Today my wife said she was tearing apart their new 36" crate pad that is thin and looks like lambs wool but isn't. I don't think she got that much but since I've been home and earlier today she is reverse sneezing a LOT. Right now she is quiet but it was every several seconds earlier.

I've read to lightly massage their throat and hold their nostril closed or gently hold it or put fingers under their ribs to stop (I tried that last one), but we are thinking of taking her to the vet in the morning. Is that the right thing to do? It just isn't normal. It doesn't sound like tracheal collapse- it is just like her brother's reverse sneeze- just frequent. At one point she acted like she would throw up but didn't.

Hello and welcome to YT :) Yes, I've used the blowing in the nose and rubbing the throat in the past to help one of mine with a reverse sneeze attach. I think a vet visit is in order to see if more needs to be done to help since this seems like it goes on quite often. Bogey was put on an antihistamine and I give it to him as needed. I was just discussing this with my vet yesterday and he said it's just been a bad allergy season and they have been seeing a lot of dogs with allergies.

Upper Respiratory Infection
 

I just wanted to thank you for this post so much. My 12 week old puppy Daisy started with what seemed like reverse sneezing 2 nights ago. I took her to the emergency vet just in case, because I've seen reverse sneezing before and this just didn't seem the same. But, of course she didn't do anything while we were there, so they sent me on my way and said it was just reverse sneezing and not to worry.

As soon as we got home she started again and it lasted on and off for about an hour before she finally settled back in. The next morning, every time she would become excited for any reason and while running around with her sister she would make a sound once or twice, but would keep running around & playing etc. After she made these sounds about 20 more times, I decided to go ahead and take her to my regular vet... especially after finding your post because her symptoms sounded more like collapsing trachea than reverse sneezing.

It turns out that she has just started with an upper respiratory infection. So, I wanted to post here, just in case anybody else is not sure what is going on with their younger puppy. The vet told me the difference was that Daisy was making (most of) these sounds on the exhalation (reverse sneezing I believe is on the inhalation) and having so many in one day. Additionally, for Daisy, massaging her throat while she was calm and not having an episode would cause her to start making the honking sounds again (and would also make an episode she was having much worse). In addition to having full episodes which lasted for a few seconds to a minute, she would just make a sound or two while continuing to go about her playful business. I also noted that she would have a non-productive gagging/retching fit at the end of each longer episode and her breathing would sound raspy (wet) for a moment or two afterwards.

I'm confused as to how she ended up with a URI though, because I haven't taken her or her sister out of the house except for their vet visits or to play in our own backyard. I work from home and am careful with people coming over to visit who have dogs.
