reverse sneezing.....very frequent my LuLu seems to be reverse sneezing very frequently......like 10 times a day.... i figure it's reverse sneezing because when she starts hacking i cover her nose, and it stops. then i rub her throat and seems to feel better. any opinons or experience? thanks! i'll be bring her to the vet soon. |
My Pom gets that a lot. Sometimes 5=6 times a day. You may want to have her checked out. Could she possibly have allergies? Maya will have spells of it maybe 3-4 days in a row then go months without it. She tends to get it when she gets excited. |
It does sound like reverse sneezing which is harmless. |
My dogs do that when they get excited |
Does reverse sneezing sound like mucas in their nostrals? I have heard that from my baby & it scares me. |
like a snort right? |
TeeJay just had an episode of reverse sneezing. I noticed he only does it when i'm cleaning something with chemicals in it. Earlier I was cleaning the bathroom with bleach and he started reverse sneezing immediately. Do you use any strong chemicals that you use to clean? That could be a reason for the reverse sneezing. |
Snorting I know what you mean and we have come to call it snorting fits. It seems to only happen when Cookie gets really excited. Especially if she's been home alone and sleeping all day. Then when someone gets home she gets very excited but is still kinda dazed from just waking up and then she gets her snorting fit. She trembles as she goes through it, which lasts only a minute. I try to comfort her and calm her down. Any one know what it could be from? It scares me at times b/c it seems that she has trouble breathing as she snorts. Poor babies!! |
Here's a good link that discusses reverse sneezing and collapsed trachea. http://glassyorkies.homestead.com/care.html#anchor_7144 |

Very interesting site Lacy's Mom, thanks  ill keep it in my fav. :) |
My yorkie & maltese do that too! My yorkie and my maltese both do reverse sneezing. I too, was very worried the first time i heard it...it sounds terrible. I do find that they do it much worse when they get excited, which I see seems to be common...lol. |
Holly has been having this problem too and I hoped it was reverse sneezing. However it was very frequent...+ 8 x a day,so I took her to the vet.He thinks it is an Upper respitory infection and gave her antibiotic and abti-inflamatories. Already after 2 days her cough/sneezing is much less. It still happens when she is excited. Don't just assume it is reverse sneezing if it happens a lot-check with your vet. |
Rosi gets the hicups sometimes then she reverse sneezes, scares her and she wants me to cuddle her, matter of fact she did it most of last night, scares me and her, needless to say we didn get much sleep last night ! |
Buckeye does this all the time. When it frist happened, I took him to the vet. I was so darned scared! of course he didn't do it while at the vets office. I described what he was doing, the stiffened legs, eyes bulging, gasping for air. He said sounds like reverse sneeze to him. I did research on it and no klonger worry about it. Buckeye don't think anything about it either. He sometimes just keeps walking. I will stop him and say swallow and that generally works. |
Yorkie poo reverse sneezing very, very frequently Have 2 yorkie poos, brother who reverse sneezes several times or more a week and his sister that had only done it once or twice before today. Today my wife said she was tearing apart their new 36" crate pad that is thin and looks like lambs wool but isn't. I don't think she got that much but since I've been home and earlier today she is reverse sneezing a LOT. Right now she is quiet but it was every several seconds earlier. I've read to lightly massage their throat and hold their nostril closed or gently hold it or put fingers under their ribs to stop (I tried that last one), but we are thinking of taking her to the vet in the morning. Is that the right thing to do? It just isn't normal. It doesn't sound like tracheal collapse- it is just like her brother's reverse sneeze- just frequent. At one point she acted like she would throw up but didn't. |

Upper Respiratory Infection Quote:
As soon as we got home she started again and it lasted on and off for about an hour before she finally settled back in. The next morning, every time she would become excited for any reason and while running around with her sister she would make a sound once or twice, but would keep running around & playing etc. After she made these sounds about 20 more times, I decided to go ahead and take her to my regular vet... especially after finding your post because her symptoms sounded more like collapsing trachea than reverse sneezing. It turns out that she has just started with an upper respiratory infection. So, I wanted to post here, just in case anybody else is not sure what is going on with their younger puppy. The vet told me the difference was that Daisy was making (most of) these sounds on the exhalation (reverse sneezing I believe is on the inhalation) and having so many in one day. Additionally, for Daisy, massaging her throat while she was calm and not having an episode would cause her to start making the honking sounds again (and would also make an episode she was having much worse). In addition to having full episodes which lasted for a few seconds to a minute, she would just make a sound or two while continuing to go about her playful business. I also noted that she would have a non-productive gagging/retching fit at the end of each longer episode and her breathing would sound raspy (wet) for a moment or two afterwards. I'm confused as to how she ended up with a URI though, because I haven't taken her or her sister out of the house except for their vet visits or to play in our own backyard. I work from home and am careful with people coming over to visit who have dogs. |
