My new yorkie throwing up/diarrhea/runny nose/no energy. PLEASE HELP! Hello. this is my first post at this forum. I came upon this forum as I was searching for some information about my baby's conditions. I would really really appreciate some help. Her name is Chloe, 10 weeks old, and weight 1.7lbs. I got her at a pet shop last week on Saturday and she's been sick since President's Day holiday (Monday). When I checked her into a vet for a health check up, the vet told us that she has an infection and prescribed her 2 different antibiotics (Amoxycillin and Chlor-histamine). She took two dosages of these medication and got really sick. She would throw up, have diarrhea and wouldnt' eat at ALL (not even NutriCal or Gerber baby food). I then took her to another vet in the area and the vet told me that she is really dehydrated so she's gotten 2 subcutaneous fluid shots so far (one on Wednesday and one today). She also told me to get her off the medications that she was on. I don't know if these fluids are helping her feel better or not but for the past few days, she seems very lethargic, wont' eat at all, wont' drink at all, would throw up anything that I feed her with a dropper/syringe, runny nose, mucous-y coughs, diarrhea, unresponsive, her eyes seem to be half open and unfocused. Have any of you experienced these at all? Please please -- any help would be soooo appreciated. I've only had her for less than a week but I've already grown sooo attached to her. (I just remembered -- another information that might help is that she's been changing locations frequently. I'm from Southern California and I got her there but I had to come up to Berkeley because I go to school here. Maybe I should factor in the stress and shock that she must've received from the frequent moving...) Hannah |
I dont want to scare you but I really think you need to get her to an emergency vet right away. It sounds like she needs to have an IV with fluids. She is so little and the little ones can go downhill fast. |
Not eating, being lathargic, eyes half opened not focused is nothing to fool around with. Your baby need more than what you can provide at this point. Please take her to a vet ASAP. Good Luck and keep us posted. |
Please dont hesitate in getting her to a vet. I feel your yorkies life is in danger. Keep us posted |
I think that she needs to be seen NOW!!!!!!!! |
I would take her to an emergency vet clinic right now as she can pass fast. From all that you have said it is not good at all and you must get her some where so they can put her on an iv and get fluids into her now. Please do not put this off or you could very possibly loose her. |
Gosh, thanks for all your quick replies and concerns. After reading the first two posts (and a PM) stating that I should take her to a vet immediately, I did. The nurse checked to see whether she's stable and he told me that she was (stable breathing, etc) so her life isn't at an immediate threat, which was a huge relief for me. If Chloe's breathing gets slower, then I'd have to check her into emergency care right away but for now, she's stable and will be fine for a while. The tricky thing is that I have to FEED her somehow. She won't take anything in -- throws up immediately. So my challenge will be to try to keep her hydrated as much as possible and to keep her blood sugar level more or less stabalized. Thanks again for all your help. I'll keep you posted. |
Force childrens pedialite down her.......................... |
GOOD ONE.......I think that would work if you find the right one. Some of them tast gross. Good luck |
If you can;t get her to eat maybe the er vet can keep her overnight and IV her. They can go down so fast. I had to take Cali 3 times in one week last month and she is a little older and weighs 4 lbs. They got her back to normal by IV's and close monitoring. Good luck with the poor baby it is so scary when they are ill. |
I see you have allready got a lot of good advice. being that bad I dont know why the vet did not keep her and start her on iV .....I would also try the pedylite unflavored and try cooking her some chicken and rice maybe she will eat a little of that. good luck and please keep us updated. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. |

I really hope you can get her to a different vet asap.. From what you described it sounds very serious. Just because she is stable doesn't mean she will be that way for very long. I don't mean to sound so bad, I just want you to know that these little ones can go down hill VERY FAST! They don't have any reserves to help keep them going. I would definetly get her some water or pedialyte by syringe in the mean time, and some nutrical. Then get her straight to the vet. Please keep us updated! |
I just came back from the vet -- I took Chloe into the emergency. She received an antibiotic injection and a medication for vomiting. She also received subcutaneous fluids to help her with dehydration. Of course, if I had a choice, I would've hospitalized her along with running various tests. However, the vet told me that the initial 24 hour fee for that would be about $800 and another $300 for each additional 24 hours. And that's just to find out what's wrong with her. If indeed they do find what's wrong with her and treat it, it would cost more. I would want to do anything within my power to save my baby, as the vet has told me that she's very very sick. However, being a college student supporting this puppy entirely on my own, it's quite impossible to finance something could potentially run upwards of $1000. It makes me sooooo soooo very sad that I cant' support her the way I want to, but at this point, this is really the best I could do. If Chloe responds well to the antibiotic injection and the medication and starts to feel progressively better, I couldn't be ANY happier -- truly I would jump up and down for joy. But for now, all I could do is pray for her. I know it's kind of useless, but I wish I would've applied for the pet insurance sooner -- it would reimburse 90% of all these fees..... =( I applied today but I have to wait until March 9 when it becomes active... :sigh: |
I don't understand why it is that when a puppy is so ill, and throwing up like this and having such a difficult time that a Vet don't go ahead and keep them over night and monitor them closely, I am hoping that when you took her back that they did keep her to help monitor her real close. Our local vet has hospital facility at his office and when need be he will keep them so they can be monitored closely after office hours, there is always an attendent there. Our Vet recenltly sold practice and retired. Gonna have to call and find out if they are continuing to have this. I sure hope your baby is ok, please keep us posted when you can and let us know how Chloe is doing. We pray that she has impoved by now. In signing off I must add am glad you found this site, we certainly are glad we did. So many nice folks here. Patti and ~Baby Blessing~ |
Check out this thread from my pet first aid book about vomiting. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32472 Hope your baby feels better. :) :getwellso :littleang |

If she doesn't improve maybe it would be a good idea to take her into the regular vet that is in office during the day. I know from past experience years ago when our Doberman got bit by rattle snake the emergency hospital was one huge bill and that was over the weekend. I also remember many years back when we first got our Cassie, right away she got real sick and we took her to an emergency hospital early one morning and they said the same thing on tests, etc. They wanted to do blood work and bunch of other things and racked up a real high estimate and since it was so close to our vets office opening we said we would take her to him, we did that and immediately he came back to us and said I know what the problem is "worms" he treated her and all was ok. He said if they had checked her under the micro they would have discovered this. We remember how sick she was and that was real scarey. We pray that your baby is all well real soon. Please keep us posted on how Chloe is doing. Patti, Jack and ~Baby Blessing~ |
I took her to the vet again... for the 3rd time. I had a hunch that she might have parvo b/c she's showing all symptoms of it so I got her tested and indeed it is parvo. According to the vet, she's "very very positive..." she wasnt' sure if Chloe's going to make it through the night.. I went onlien and ordered Parvo Guard... just in case. I'm beyond desperate now. It should come in on Saturday -- I don't know if she'll pull through till then but I can try... At this point, I'm just getting myself ready to say good bye to her. Such a poor little thing... I've only had her less than a week and it's amazing how fast you get attached to them. I love her to death. |

That baby really needs to be hospitalized if there is a chance for it to survive. I know it is expensive but maybe they will accept payments. |
Hannah - I know what you are going through. I just lost my new puppy to parvo on February 14. I only had my puppy 1 day and he started showing symptoms. I never ever want to see a dog go through that again. I wasn't with him when he finally passed because he was at the vets for the last 24 hours on fluids. I don't know how much research you have done on parvo but there is a 7 to 10 day incubation period which would mean your baby was already infected when you got him from the pet store. You should call that pet store and let them know everything that is going on. I would make sure they know Chloe is sick with parvo when she started showing symptoms. Make sure you get the name of the person that you talked to. Hopefully they will stand behind the puppy. Make sure you tell them you know parvo has a 7 - 10 day incubation period which would mean she was already infected when you bought her. Please post and let us know how Chloe is doing. I have heard good things about that Parvo Guard, the main thing is fluids. Try really hard to keep fluids in her. Hopefully she will hold on until the Parvo Guard gets there. Post soon! Kim |
Hello again. I just dropped my baby Chloe off at another vet that charged less for her to be hospitalized. She'll be on Intravenous fluids and will be given fluids subcutaneously. Ravens Keeper, as you've stated, yes, I found out that there is an incubation period of 7-10 days which means that she did get parvo before I got her. The vet that I went to this morning infomred me of a law stating that there has to be at least 2 weeks to give the puppy back if s/he's sick -- the pet shop only gave me 48 hours. Everything seems a mess right now because I want to make sure that Chloe is okay and getting all the care that she needs, while looking into this law that might turn into a possible lawsuit (I REALLY dont' want to go there though) and since I'm graduating from college a year early and this is my last semester, I need to study like no tomorrow =( But first thing's first -- I need to make sure that Chloe will make it through (the vet said that if the virus has spread to her heart, there is no way to cure her...) PLEASE DOG OWNERS: WHEN YOU SEE THE FIRST SYMPTOMS OF YOUR YORKIE INACTIVE, LETHARGIC, HAVING DIARRHEA, VOMITING, WON'T EAT OR DRINK -------------- PLEASE GET THEM TESTED FOR PARVO EVEN IF THEY'VE BEEN VACCINATED! LITTLE PUPPIES ARE ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO THIS TRULY NASTY VIRUS. YOUR DOGS DON'T DESERVE TO GO THROUGH SUCH A HARD HARD TIME, ULTIMATELY TAKING THEIR LIVES IF LEFT UNTREATED AND UNDETECTED. ALSO, IF YOU'VE GOTTEN A DOG AT A BREEDER OR A PETSHOP AND YOU RECENTLY FOUND OUT (WITHIN 7-10 DAYS OF GETTING THEM) THAT THEY HAVE A VIRUS, LOOK INTO THE LAW ABOUT THIS... IT MIGHT JSUT BE A CALIFORNIA LAW AND I JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS SO I DON'T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS, BUT AS SOON AS I STUDY FOR MY QUIZ, I WILL BE SURE TO LOOK INTO IT. thank you thank you ALL so much for all your concerns for my baby. You are alllll tooooo kind! |
I hope that things get better for this little baby. I am so sorry about this......I am glad that you gave this ingo out and hope that it helps other out in a time like this. My babies are sending BIG KISSES AND (((((((HUGZ))))))) :lovewings   Very good info!!!!!!!! |
How is your baby today?? Sounds like Parvo to me but i am not a vet could just be an infection but like the other say its nothin to fool around with. I had a scottish terrier that i had already had his first set of shot including one parvo vaccine and he still contracted it before it was time for his second vaccine. Having the one vaccine saved his life but it still was hard to see him so ill. That was many years ago and i know how you feel about having a sick baby. Please keep us all posted on how your darling pet is doing!! Melinda Little |
well i responded to your first thread and now i see you have posted an update. Yes it sounded like parvo to me from the very beginning from the symtoms you were describing. It is awful to see how bad they feel with that and my scotty survived it because he had a vaccination prior to contracting it. I have faith that your little girl will pull thru since you had already had one vaccine for her. Good luck and again keep us posted. Melinda |
I'm so glad that Chloe is at the vets now. She has the best care and she can get fluids through an IV now. I'm glad your checking into the laws, I would still contact the store and let them know what is going on, might be helpful if you have to sue to get your money back for vet bills. |
