My new yorkie throwing up/diarrhea/runny nose/no energy. PLEASE HELP!
 

Hello. this is my first post at this forum. I came upon this forum as I was searching for some information about my baby's conditions. I would really really appreciate some help.

Her name is Chloe, 10 weeks old, and weight 1.7lbs.

I got her at a pet shop last week on Saturday and she's been sick since President's Day holiday (Monday). When I checked her into a vet for a health check up, the vet told us that she has an infection and prescribed her 2 different antibiotics (Amoxycillin and Chlor-histamine). She took two dosages of these medication and got really sick. She would throw up, have diarrhea and wouldnt' eat at ALL (not even NutriCal or Gerber baby food).

I then took her to another vet in the area and the vet told me that she is really dehydrated so she's gotten 2 subcutaneous fluid shots so far (one on Wednesday and one today). She also told me to get her off the medications that she was on.

I don't know if these fluids are helping her feel better or not but for the past few days, she seems very lethargic, wont' eat at all, wont' drink at all, would throw up anything that I feed her with a dropper/syringe, runny nose, mucous-y coughs, diarrhea, unresponsive, her eyes seem to be half open and unfocused.

Have any of you experienced these at all? Please please -- any help would be soooo appreciated. I've only had her for less than a week but I've already grown sooo attached to her.

(I just remembered -- another information that might help is that she's been changing locations frequently. I'm from Southern California and I got her there but I had to come up to Berkeley because I go to school here. Maybe I should factor in the stress and shock that she must've received from the frequent moving...)

I dont want to scare you but I really think you need to get her to an emergency vet right away. It sounds like she needs to have an IV with fluids. She is so little and the little ones can go downhill fast.

Not eating, being lathargic, eyes half opened not focused is nothing to fool around with. Your baby need more than what you can provide at this point. Please take her to a vet ASAP. Good Luck and keep us posted.

I would take her to an emergency vet clinic right now as she can pass fast. From all that you have said it is not good at all and you must get her some where so they can put her on an iv and get fluids into her now. Please do not put this off or you could very possibly loose her.

Gosh, thanks for all your quick replies and concerns. After reading the first two posts (and a PM) stating that I should take her to a vet immediately, I did. The nurse checked to see whether she's stable and he told me that she was (stable breathing, etc) so her life isn't at an immediate threat, which was a huge relief for me. If Chloe's breathing gets slower, then I'd have to check her into emergency care right away but for now, she's stable and will be fine for a while. The tricky thing is that I have to FEED her somehow. She won't take anything in -- throws up immediately. So my challenge will be to try to keep her hydrated as much as possible and to keep her blood sugar level more or less stabalized. Thanks again for all your help. I'll keep you posted.

GOOD ONE.......I think that would work if you find the right one. Some of them tast gross.

If you can;t get her to eat maybe the er vet can keep her overnight and IV her. They can go down so fast. I had to take Cali 3 times in one week last month and she is a little older and weighs 4 lbs. They got her back to normal by IV's and close monitoring. Good luck with the poor baby it is so scary when they are ill.

I see you have allready got a lot of good advice. being that bad I dont know why the vet did not keep her and start her on iV .....I would also try the pedylite unflavored and try cooking her some chicken and rice maybe she will eat a little of that. good luck and please keep us updated. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

I really hope you can get her to a different vet asap.. From what you described it sounds very serious. Just because she is stable doesn't mean she will be that way for very long. I don't mean to sound so bad, I just want you to know that these little ones can go down hill VERY FAST! They don't have any reserves to help keep them going. I would definetly get her some water or pedialyte by syringe in the mean time, and some nutrical. Then get her straight to the vet. Please keep us updated!

I just came back from the vet -- I took Chloe into the emergency. She received an antibiotic injection and a medication for vomiting. She also received subcutaneous fluids to help her with dehydration. Of course, if I had a choice, I would've hospitalized her along with running various tests. However, the vet told me that the initial 24 hour fee for that would be about $800 and another $300 for each additional 24 hours. And that's just to find out what's wrong with her. If indeed they do find what's wrong with her and treat it, it would cost more. I would want to do anything within my power to save my baby, as the vet has told me that she's very very sick. However, being a college student supporting this puppy entirely on my own, it's quite impossible to finance something could potentially run upwards of $1000. It makes me sooooo soooo very sad that I cant' support her the way I want to, but at this point, this is really the best I could do. If Chloe responds well to the antibiotic injection and the medication and starts to feel progressively better, I couldn't be ANY happier -- truly I would jump up and down for joy. But for now, all I could do is pray for her.

I know it's kind of useless, but I wish I would've applied for the pet insurance sooner -- it would reimburse 90% of all these fees..... =( I applied today but I have to wait until March 9 when it becomes active... :sigh:

I don't understand why it is that when a puppy is so ill, and throwing up like this and having such a difficult time that a Vet don't go ahead and keep them over night and monitor them closely, I am hoping that when you took her back that they did keep her to help monitor her real close. Our local vet has hospital facility at his office and when need be he will keep them so they can be monitored closely after office hours, there is always an attendent there. Our Vet recenltly sold practice and retired. Gonna have to call and find out if they are continuing to have this. I sure hope your baby is ok, please keep us posted when you can and let us know how Chloe is doing. We pray that she has impoved by now.
