Hi I have not been on Yorkie talk for a few years. I am happy to be back! I have a question, I have a 2.5 pound little girl that is needing a dental The Vet wants to use Propofol and I cannot remember if this is a safe drug for her. With her being so little I am a nervous wreck. I lost my Bucky three years ago to a dental and my heart is still broken. I cannot go that that again. Thank you for any advice.

Please anyone. I really need some input. I am trying to relearn on how to navigate yorkie talk and I will keep looking at other threads to see if I can find something on Propofol also.

I’m not surprised that you’re nervous, given the tiny size of your girl.

I’m far from an expert, but I didn’t think Propofol was normally used as the primary anesthesia during a surgical procedure. In my limited experience, it’s been used as a sort of pre-anesthetic, before the general anesthetic is given.

Here’s a brief article on canine anesthesia. However, you really should discuss your concerns with your vet. He or she should be able to explain the anesthesia choices being recommended and the reason for them. If the vet won’t do that ... I wouldn’t trust that vet.

Thank you so much. I have a call in to the Vet. They probably think I am crazy, but we have to do what is best for our little ones.

Yes, Propofol is a great anesthetic. I doubt the vet would use it as the sole anesthesia. It is often use for induction before the Isoflurane or Sevoflurane gas is turned on.

So sorry you went through a traumatic experience before.

I would definitely ensure your vet is doing all of these things:
- Pre-op bloodwork
- Anti nausea injection prevent vomitng while under
- Tech dedicated to monitored your pets vitals before, during and after anesthesia
- IV catheter placed (in case emergency and meds need to be administered asap)
- Fluids
- X-Rays prior to dental being performed
- Pain mgt. afterwards

I really have been happy with my services with an AAHA-approved approval if you have one as well. I just feel like their standard of care is often a little better (not always, but it has been IME).

Just be sure to ask if they have someone who monitors the pup while they are anesthetize. Some vets don’t do that and it is something that I feel is important.
