He Honked Last Night! Ugh. We are visiting relatives with no humidifier in the house. We are also helping her prep and paint the place, so there is a lot of dust. Last night, Bon Bon gave a couple of goose honk coughs. He’s got an appointment at the vet for his one year check up this Friday. I’m hoping it is environmental, and not anything worse.

Please have his chest radiographed for a tracheal view. The goose honk was the start (years ago) of my boy’s collapsing trachea. He’s lived six years with it and now, sadly, at 11 yrs old, we’re beginning to see a worsening of the issue. If it is trachea-related, my point is that both a bronchodilator, hydromet cough syrup, and a very low dose of prednisone every two or three days help(ed) save his trachea from further trauma. The earlier this condition is found and treated, or maintained, the longer your dog can live with it with only occasional discomfort (the cough). (Kennel cough also has a goose honk kind of cough, and even vaccinated, there are different strains.) You’d never know my guy has a tracheal issue, even in end stage collapse, except when he picks up an upper respiratory infection. Good luck to both of you!

Thanks for the advice. He won’t be seeing his regular vet on Friday, but one in the same practice, with access to his records. Hubby and I are hoping it is just the dry, dusty air, but we are still going to follow up on this. Right now we are also dealing with family strife and our little guy has been a comfort to the both of us. He makes us so happy, how could we repay that by ignoring his health?

Yorkies are Heaven on earth. ♥️ I do hope it’s nothing and it could very easily be nothing — yes, just an irritant. As I watch my Yorkie boy with a chronic illness, what helps is knowing I acted immediately years ago, that I did the necessary and responsible research for a reputable breeder from the start, and that his condition remains controlled, slow-advancing and, most of all, that he’s comfortable with good quality of life. When the last isn’t the case, it will be a sad day, indeed; especially as he’s just 11 yrs old; my first yorkie had no issues and lived to be 17 1/2. I wish there were a way to eradicate collapsing tracheas. Even with all my due diligence, we’re still dealing with this breed issue. Please let us know how it works out. Good thoughts and good news to you.

| OK, it was a single honking event that has not been repeated in at least three days. My instructions are to keep an ear out and to return for an exam if there are frequent honk events. Frequency is up to me to determine, but I'm thinking if it gets to once a week, I'm going to call it frequent. We are to make sure that he stays away from dusty air and extreme cold for prolonged periods. Puppy will not go to the dog park until some time in April. Possibly May. The air filters in our heating system are changed regularly and the humidifier is set for 30%. For now, my baby is healthy, 4.62 pounds, and is up to date on vaccines and regular testing.
