| Slab fracture 4th premolar.... My 8 year old girl just had a slab fracture of her upper 4th premolar (tooth #108). We knew within days because she stopped chewing her favorite treat. Vet did a Vital Pulpectomy (?) on Halloween and I'm hoping it worked. She had her dental in August and it was only grade 1, no problems! They just did x-ray and she does not show infection so hoping her procedure works. Meanwhile I think I need to prepare for a possible extraction. I'm scared of the possible complications of extraction, but the one canine dentist my vet contacted said a root canal would be about $3000!!! I can't do that as there may be a knee surgery in her future and we already spent over $5000 on her back surgery at University of Pennsylvania Vet Hospital (apparently vet schools around here are not an inexpensive option). I'm hoping to learn from others' experiences. Maggie is on Oral Clindamycin (iquid) and Meloxicam. Should I expect my vet to give me copies of her xrays and a report so I can look around in case extraction necessary? I know they could do it at her vet, but I want to be sure. His main expertise is ortho. His bio mentions root canal training, but he didn't suggest he do one, perhaps due to it being a larger tooth. This is from his webpage "He also has an interest in Veterinary Dentistry and attended courses at the Animal Dental Training Center in Maryland to improve his skills in extensive surgical dental extractions and root canal therapy." |

| Callie has broken two molars before one I did a root canal on because I thought saving the tooth was best but in hind sight I would have just had them pull it like they did the other one she broke. There were no issues with the tooth being removed. Callie’s dental two years ago they also had to remove a lose molar. Unless I’m missing something a regular vet can just remove a tooth unless there is a bigger issue.

| The fourth premolar is the biggest tooth except for the canines....I read this (on many sites) "In dogs, the canine teeth, maxillary fourth premolars and mandibular first molars are clinically the most important teeth and root canal procedures are typically recommended as an option for treating these teeth as opposed to extraction when possible." THIS site is very informative regarding extractions and makes me more certain I need to pre-qualify the dr who will do it (If necessary!) I just don't know if ANY will give me prices without a visit, though I would send her x-rays if my vet gives me them... Taking the bite out of tooth extractions It scares me that losing it will impact her and that extracting it could have complications. But who has $3k for a doggie root canal? |

| Thanks, That's good to hear. You had said molar so I wasn't sure. Apparently this premolar is one of the most commonly fractured teeth. We don't even know how she did it because she doesn't chew on antlers or anything exceptionally hard.... I hope I never to worry. Vet work here in NJ , near Philly, is very $$. It was $500 just for the vital pulp treatment, and would have been more except she had blood work just 3 months ago when she had her dental. The dental vet gave a ballpark of $3k for a root canal. I bet the extraction here will be closer to 1,000. |
