Pax Oh, I am so sorry about poor Pax getting sick again..I forgot what the dx was before apart from the parasites? How is Pilot? And Pax is unbearably cute, poor baby |

Pilot seems to be doing well, here are some updated pictures of him :) https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pi...ctureid=140062 https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pi...ctureid=140063 |
Pax again I wonder why the antibiotics and prednisone is indicated? Or could it be parasites again? Ok I understand, but it is important that a definitive dx is given before meds are re introduced? Both of the boys are so sweet. It must really hurt you to have one or both sick. |
I think it's one or the other not both. She gave us the Tylan because Metronidazole is not good long term, it can cause neurological damage. Pax seemed to respond to the Metronidazole or Drontal Plus (dewormer, he took both), but we took him off the Metronidazole after being it on it for 5 weeks and no diarrhea for 2 weeks of that. We've dewormed Pax 4 times in the last few months (2 weeks apart), it's getting harder to believe it's that as he's not even going outside anymore. |
Thanks for the explanation of meds. It seems like dewormer and antibiotic. Is it possible the dewormer did not cover all parasites? I do not know names of various dewormer sand their targets. Another stool test may be indicated? |
My dog had tapeworm once and some dewormer do not cover that. Also parasites can linger in the home and reinfect, do not need to go outside to get them. |
Anyway, it seems that another vet visit is needed and if it is chronic IBD, he may need the prednisone. |
The dewormer (Drontal Plus) is a broad spectrum dewormer and targets many worms including tapeworms, etc. Metronidazole kills bacteria and treats Giardia (another parasite). I have not reintroduced any medications at this time, the internal medicine vet wanted to start Pax on aggressive steroid and immuno supressive therapy, but we did not go down that road because Pax's diarrhea stopped. Our regular vet suggested the same as they could not find any parasites in the fecal or diarrhea panel. It could also be a food allergy to perhaps (chicken), but the boys have been eating home cooked chicken breasts for years. I guess it's possible a sudden allergy can develop from what I read. |
Thanks again for the info. Glad it was a broad spectrum dewormer and that stool samples are clean. I wonder about chicken allergy as there were times on the chicken when he was ok? Poor you and the dogs, you have been through so much recently. There is a dx food by Hills that is non allergenic that the vet may suggest if food allergy is suspected. A mystery indeed that I hope the vet can figure out so the real culprit can be discovered and treated |

The boys don't eat commerical dog food anymore, so I'll have to consult with an nutritionist. The vet gave me some recommendations but they all require my vet to submit paperwork which they haven't done. Perhaps I'll go down this road as well. |
Looks like another stool sample and comprehensive vet visit. For the allergy, the vet might suggest a short trial of the commercial dx food. But that seems the longest shot to me. I feel that the parasites did a job on the GI systems leaving the dogs with very sensitive GI tracts. But I am not a vet and haven’t seen the dogs. I was once a research scientist only and tend to look at controls etc. so please excuse my comments and discussions. But I have also had sick dogs with complex issues and know how hard it is to pin down a dx sometimes. Good luck, and may you have the stamina and funds to get to the bottom of this! |

Seems like the light at the end of the tunnel is getting further away! |
Praying the light is still at the end of the tunnel and shining brightly! |

Hi PILOTthePuppy, I'm hoping this was turns out to have been a fluke because he ate something funky. Thank you for the pictures--they are just precious. You described Pax's poo as "soft." Hoping that means it is not bloody are odd colored, right. How is his behavior otherwise? Prayers continue. --KatysMom |
