| diarrhea again and again I was not online for a long time because I was injured and was in the hospital for a while. I feel better again and I get in touch with a problem regarding my Yorky lady. She is now eight months old and unfortunately I have had problems with her digestion since she is with me. When she was a puppy, she had giardia. Of course, I went to the vet - and she got antibiotic and a cure for parasites. But unfortunately she has again and again problems with dirrahia. She either vomited or had diarrhea. Of course, I went with her regularly to the vet and then examined her and we get back drugs. At home, I cooked her soup, the famous carrot soup against diarrhea. And she got the diet food. cooked carrots, cooked chicken, rice and so on. Then it was always a bit better but at regular intervals she got back diarrhea or abdominal cramps. Again and again the poop was examined and nothing special was found. then, of course, we thought it is a food allergy. So far she got Yorky dry food. The same thing that she already got from the breeder. Now my veterinarian gave me a special dry food for particularly sensitive animals. It's a Yorkshire Terrier dry food for the stomach. There are also a special companie, which produce animalistic for very sensitive dogs here in Austria. And I thought I should try this. so i tried the new food and it —-doesn’t help - diarreha again She does not get any treats anymore because she has always been very sensitive to it. I've been to the vet really often with her, and he could not really tell me more. Furthermore, I support her immune system with a special therapy, using Colostrum. ——doesn’t help - diarreha again It's like I'm not trying to overreact, but if such a little Yorky has diarrhea again and again then you're just worried. I'll let check her stool sample and Hope I get a little smarter. Is there anyone here who has similar experiences? I'm really desperate when I'm back in the veterinary practice again and again... and I feel totally stupid. Actually, she is very well and she likes to play and is a happy Yorkie. There are always only phases where it starts again and she gets diarrhea properly. Maybe someone has some information and can help a little. I am happy to hear something to get smarter. I am sorry for my worse English! Sorryyyy |

| Hi Naru, Your English is better than my German. (Or any European language for that matter—despite that I studied several at one time or another. Sad!) I’m so sorry you and your yorkie are dealing with this. I'm not a nurse or vet, and have really only dealt with sporadic mushy poo-poo in a senior yorkie. Maybe if we exchange additional information, those who have more experience with chronic, albeit seems sporadic, diarrhea will comment. Diarreha is a scary, particularly so for these little ones. There can be one or more contributing factors. WebMD/Pets lists no fewer than 15 different causes. See: “Diarrhea in Dogs:Causes and Treatment.“ While diarrhea causes health problems, it can be a symptom of underlying illness, too. What does the diarrhea look like? What color is it? Does it always look like that; is it always that color? See also article on YorkieInfoCenter, “Yorkie Diarrhea” (n.d., no attribution), |

| So sorry to hear about your accident...do hope you are feeling better now! You said she has been tested for the diarrhea, but how many times was she treated for the giardia? Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose. I might be tempted to ask the vet about doing the treatment again....especially if you didn't disinfect everything at the time she was first treated. Here is a link that may help: Giardia in Dogs: Learn About Symptoms and Treatment The other thing is that it CAN take months for the symptoms to improve, depending on how bad the original damage was. Please keep us posted...

| she was tested twice on the Giardia. Thereafter, the stool sample was repeatedly examined, but found nothing. I always washed all the toys after an infection, as well as her bed are washed and disinfected. I also washed or disinfected the drinking bowls or even replaced them. But the vet only make a „quick “Test with her Poop. Unfortunately, I do not know how meaningful these quick tests are I am currently collecting for a more comprehensive stool sample and hope we get more information. she vomited at the first Giardia infection. Than she has a second infection and she got fever again but she hasn’t vomited. After that she had an infection - the stool sample was negativ to Giardia. she „just“ had diarrhea. My veterinarian thinks that she is just very sensitive and it should getting better when she is a little older. Last edited by Naru; 05-25-2018 at 09:26 AM. |

I assume there hasn't been any blood in these recent stools. Are the stools overly dark? Thank you for the update, and for being such a caring yorkie mama. | |||

| Yes, the "quick test" is an in-house observation. Now I collect her poop for the test in the lab. But according to my animal doctor I have to pick up the stool samples over three days. she never had a bloody stool. Her bowel movement was usually very mushy and slimy. the color was mostly light brown. My vet meant „she is in generel sensitiv with her stomach“. |

| Basically, I have to say that her diarrhea is also sporadic again and again. I have watched it and I can not tell whats the main problem. What I noticed: After she got better and I fed her „normal dry food“ - she got problems again afterwards. So I thought maybe she was allergic to the food. Then she got the food for sensitive dogs. But a few weeks later she got problems again: diarrhea Once she had vomited between the second Giardia episode. But that came only 4-5 times in total. But the diarrhea comes spontaneously and over again. Partly it is so that she is totally in the mood the day before and eats and plays and has fun ... and the next day she has the whole day very bad diarrhea. She has to poop 10 to 12 times /day ... (I went to the vet of course) It is so strange, since she is housebroken and suddenly makes from 1 second to the other in the apartment. Then I realize that she is not feeling well. Most recently, she was sitting at the sofa with me and could not even hold back for a second, got up and pooped on the couch. I calmed her down, but she was really ashamed. And I'm so sorry because I know that's just because of her gut. I really hope the closer examination of the stool will give more information, since I am really very desperate with the little ones |

| Hi Naru, You wrote, "....sitting on the soft ... she was really ashamed." These little ones so want to please us. I'm so sorry your little one has to deal with all of this. ladyjane earlier posted, "The other thing is that it CAN take months for the symptoms to improve, depending on how bad the original damage was." See several possibly helpful comments on 2014 thread, "Intermittent Diarrhea" started by member Bos. In particular, see Wylie's Mom's comment, in part quoted below. ...if he actually already *had* giardia, recovered, and is now suffering the common after effects that some dogs have afterwards (for months!). This is what happened to my Marcel - he had giardia as young puppy, and then had diarrhea that no vet could fix for MONTHS. I finally consulted a pet nutritionist and she put him immediately on a home cooked white fish/green beans/potato diet and *boom*, his diarrhea was gone in 2 days...we fed that diet for about 1.5 months and then switched to raw and have been feeding that now for years.Bless you for staying with this--these little ones are so precious. I know it's hard on you--it's hard on us when they are going through a rough patch. Please keep posting updates. We care. Last edited by KatysMom; 05-25-2018 at 03:23 PM. |

Naru - the above quoted is *exactly* what I was going to tell you about. What you're going thru w/ giardia is exactly what happened when my Marcel was a puppy and had giardia - MONTHS and months of mushy, gel-like, grainy poos. No vet could solve it. After 100s of hours of research over months and months, I finally read that when puppies get giardia - the germ/bug can actually start digesting their small intestine, causing real damage and longer-term effects (doesn't go that far in less-vulnerable adult dogs). So you have to "rest" the small intestine by giving very simple foods, and most definitely get on a probiotic asap to repopulate the intestinal flora. The nutritionist I worked with put Marcel on a diet of whitefish (cod, sole, tilapia, whatnot...), green beans, and potatoes. And then some supplements. I literally cried when after 2 days, Marcel had his first genuinely solid poo in MONTHS. I can dig out more info from my files on this diet if you want it...
