PLEASE READ Especially NEW PUPPY Parents This is NOT meant to anyone in particular - it's only because I had an experience with Chanel a long time ago - and have seen a few posts lately about puppies ingesting human medications..... This is just a warning to EVERYONE about leaving medication in reach of a puppy - Remember - they don't know what they can eat and what will kill them and EVERYONE should puppy-proof your house - This includes your PURSE - a friend lost her yorkie after he got in her purse and ate her Birth Control Pills - We ALL HAVE TO BE VERY AWARE OF the Medications in our house and keep them up high... just like we would a REAL baby. I would advise we ALL take a look around our house and make sure nothing can be reached by a yorkie. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye..... |
Great reminder! |
I'm so lucky because since I have two little ones my house is completely baby proofed for fur and human babies... :) Thanks for the advice Vilette! |
Sometimes the little things slip past our minds, but reminders like this help us remember! It would be horrible to lose a furbaby because we weren't thinking about it. |
I agree...and why I added about our PURSES too - I just found Tylenol in the bottom of mine and had no idea it was there - When the girls go digging in my purse after I snag a treat from somewhere - I always let them get it themselves....probably a bad thing to do - but they enjoy tracking down their surprise so much it's hard to not let them. |
Yes, this is so true. I haven't had any mishaps with KimMee but I have with my daughter's Yorkie- Eddie. He has gotten in my purse twice- Thank God it was just cough drops!!!!! But it took me twice to learn-don't leave my purse in Eddie's world. Thanks for the reminder Villette, I know new puppy owners propably wouldn't think about this. |
Great reminder, Villette! Thanks, honey! :D |
Thanks you guys - and funny Dwana - "Eddies World" - I like that !! A while someone on (a different site) kept her Birth Control Pills in her purse - her little yorkie got into the package and ate a few pills and hemmoraged from every orafice.....It was so bad he had to be euthanized....it was just HORRIBLE :( Many young women keep Birth Control within easy reach ...like in their Purses or on a Coffee table - this will be FATAL if a dog got into them !! |
That makes me think... what if I take my dog to a friends house? I have plenty of girlfriends who would let their BCPs sit anywhere. Like I said, it would just be really unfortunate to have a dog die when it could have been prevented (BOY do I know the feeling.) |
Great reminder. We have never left any thing down low. all meds are put up not even asprin lay out at my house. It has always been a rule and I dont even let my kids lay their clothes on the floor The reason being I know My two like to search pockets. and so they are reminded every time they stay all night nothing down low in Yorkies reach. Thanks again for reminding us we reallly do need reminded. I remind my kids every time their here even though They say We know Mom. lol :D |
Greast reminder, Villette! When our granddaughter comes over with her kids (the skin kind) I am always picking up purses, diaper bags, etc. etc. and putting them up high so the dogs can't get into them. They don't have any pets (except for a hamster) and are not used to being around them, so they put EVERYTHING on the floor! |

Amanda....After reading about that poor yorkie that died ingesting BC Pills....... I would suggest you ask your friends to put that stuff up - it's deadly..... You brought up a GREAT Point about other peoples homes though ...it sure would be a good idea to check with your friends or family to see if all their medication is way out of reach. |
Some good points raised here I think. Especailly regarding other people houses. Smudger will eat anything he finds on the floor. Unfortuantely we have nothing in our house, no pain killers, no birth control pills.......... I say UNfortuantely because I have a really bad stomach ache and can't be bothered going to the shop :) :( :thumbdown |
Great reminder, I remember having a fit after I dropped a pill that I was going to take and could not find it. I put Crystal on the bed because it was no where to be found. After a half hour I got a broom and went under my frig and there it was stuck to my broom. |
Can't belive I didn't bring this up in my previous post  There is a yorkie which lives across the road from my mum and she got hold of her owners medication after she had an operaton, I'm not sure how many she ate but she was very very sick. She was at the vets for 2 weeks and had to have a blood transfusion. Milly (the yorkie) also couldn't walk for many months afterwards for some reason. Luckily she suvived, but the lady didn't have pet insurance and the bill was £2,000. I'm sure she learnt her lesson |
Another reminder along the same lines as this is to make sure two of the commands you teach your dog are "DROP IT" and "LEAVE IT" because those commands can save a life and have many times over. They are easy to teach and it is important to take the time to reinforce it as often as you can so that if you or someone else ever drops something you can prevent your baby form gobbling it up quickly. If anyone wants instructions on how to teach either of these plese PM me and I will provide detailed instructions. :) |

one time - I dropped a hormone pill and literally scopped up all 3 of my dogs in one swoop and put them outside while I looked - it was right on the table in front of my nose - but you should have seen the expressions of the girls looking in at me - like "WHAT IS HER PROBLEM...and why are we LOCKED OUT" ? The drop it command is great to know but the whole point is NOT TO HAVE ANY OF THIS STUFF OUT - a Pill is very hard for a dog to drop - they stick to the inside of their mouths and will disolve by the time you can get it out. |

so worried. I have to wrap any pill I give Crystal in 7 lbs of balony :) to get her to take it....but that would just be the one if I didn't find it. |

We all hate hearing those kind of stories..but there really are so many things we do in our daily lives that can potentially be poisoneous to a small dog..... |
You are so right Villette!! Just yesterday Mandy jumped up on the counter and ran off with the Tums!!!! I'm so glad I saw her, because she would have ran outside to eat them all. She's a big furbaby, being a Rottie, so yesterday was clean off all the counters day! :) A great reminder for all V!!!   |
I totally agree with you. I had one dog that routinely checked my coat pockets and purse for anything she mght like (she was always smelling lifesavers). And, she also routinely checked all the wastepaper baskets in the house. This is another thing to keep an eye on. Carol Jean |
Here, anything dangerous gets thrown away in the trash compactor. That way, it is impossible for any animal to get to it. |

Thank you for reminding us of this very important topic! |
I know how the whole "leaving the purse down" can be, Pebbles, for some reason LOVES to get in my purse, I don't ever carry medicines, but she did get to my candy (I usually carry mints) and ufff I was so scared! ... and another thing you should watch for that happened to me with Pebbles, of course, ... I made myself a sandwich for lunch, and Chris, my husband wasn't coming home for lunch, so I decided to eat at the bed, well, I made my sandwich, set in on the nightstand, then remembered that I had to put my clothes in the washer so I went and when I got back she has ate the top part of my sandwich (the top bread) ... ufff, once again I was so scared!!! so never again ... I mean nothing happened to her in any of those 2 incidents, but I learned from my mistakes ... and now I am more careful ... they don't have to be hungry to eat human food, the smell gets in their little noses and they'll go for it!!! be very careful with your babies :) |
I have an inside zippered pocket in my purse and I keep all medications zipped in that pocket. Loki loves to snoop. Any suggestions for getting hubby to not leave his pants (with full pockets) on the floor and change on the bedside table? I can just see Loki stealing a quarter. :( |

I don't think a yorkie would try to eat coins but I could be very wrong....I guess if I were you - I'd raid his pockets and keep what I find for myself :D ! |
Great reminder to us all Villette, thanks! :) |
Thanks for the reminder. I have a few of my medications in a drawer in the cabinet of my bathroom. She stays in the bathroom while I'm at work. She hasn't learned to open the cabinet, but what if she learns to do that one day. I need to be sure to move them. I didn't even think about it. |
