You know, I didn't really think too much into this until about 6 months ago. We have all our pill bottles and cleaners in a cabinet with a lock on it. One day someone in the house got into the cabinet and forgot to lock it back. Too bad we did not realize this until my one year old at the time had gotten the tylenol out of the cabinet, somehow managed to open the bottle, (even though it was suppose to be child proof) and ate an unknown number of the pills. I came into the room and found him sitting on the floor, surounded by little white pills. I immediatly called poison control, who alerted the hospital that we were on the way. We spent hours there, having his stomach pumped, and having him drink the charcoal stuff. Lots of fun that was!!! I am so lucky that the situation turned out the way that it did. Because I could have lost my sweet boy that day. So when we came home needless to say we went through the whole house, and checked, then double checked everything. Or so we thought. About a month or so ago, not very long after we lost sugar. Gizmo was really starting to act funny, just laying around not eating or drinking. Not knowing what was going on, I asked some people on here for help. I did what was recomended, nutri-cal, water through syringe etc. Well, stayed up with him all night, and early the next morning, he got up to poop. So I took him onto his pad in the kitchen, and about five minutes later, out popped a baby bottle nipple. Yeah I know, who ever would have thought. I have no idea how that nipple got on the floor in the first place. But it got there, and he ate it. Just goes to show that they really have no idea what is food, and what is deadly. Thank God he was able to get that through on his own! I could not imagine being alone. So needless to say, now I'm on constant floor duty. Check the carpets, kitchen floor, under beds, cribs, bathrooms, everywhere!! It's the only way that I feel safe. I'm so glad that you started this Villette, it is SO SO important that people really know the dangers that are all over the place. It could be something that we walk past everyday, electric cords, pestisides, cleaners, NIPPLES, LOL. You just don't know!! |
This is slightly off of the subject, but not by far. Be sure you really know the people you visit before taking your dog into their home. Once, my husband (at the time) and I took our Chihuahua's out with us for the day. My husband got a call from a friend of his. We were in the area where they lived and decided to stop by to say hello. We stayed for just a short while and headed home. I noticed that the dogs seemed a little ill upon arriving home. I thought that they had gotten car sick and didn't think much of it. It started to storm really bad outside and I noticed I didn't see the dogs anywhere (they usually cuddled up during a storm). I found one and she was sleeping in her bed (which was odd, but not crazy). I couldn't find the other. I finally found him sleeping outside on the patio in the middle of the slamming rain (the doors always stayed cracked for them). He didn't even hear me calling him and he freaked out and started crying when I picked him up. I knew something was VERY wrong. To try to make this short, when I took them both to the vet, he kept asking me if there was anything they could have gotten into in my house. I kept saying there was nothing that I knew of. He said "nothing like marajuana?" I was totally offended that he was asking me that...and he asked me more than twice. I then started to get totally pissed and I told him to find the real problem b/c I don't do anything like that and I would certainly not have something like that in my home!! I felt like I was being judged because I was young. Not the case...that's exactly what it was. I would have never guessed that the people we saw would have something like that in their home. They were a couple with two small children (one was a newborn and the reason we stopped by was to see him). It just goes to show that you never know. I apologized for my being so rude to the vet and thanked him for saving my doggies' life. Apparently he had seen that alot and knew exactly what it was. |

Wow! That was crazy!! Thank God he knew what was wrong!! Those poor kids living in that house with drugs :( . Makes me want to cry. If the dog could get into it, then so could they... |
WOW to both of you HEATHERS ! (lol) wow - Heather Lathrop - you are SO lucky your baby is still living - tylenol and asprins can be lethal ! Good work getting him to the vet so quickly ! and Heather #2 - DOUBLE WOW .....That goes to show us how SUPER important it is to keep our eyes on them at people's homes - I know a few people who do that stuff and man would I be PISSED if it was left out for the girls or a child to get into - that really was irresponsible of them and they could have OD'd your baby ! |

Bump This Up Again...good Reminder Villette! We Never Can Be Too Careful. I Am Forever Dropping Vitamins On The Floor And Have To Crawl Around On Hands And Knees Until I Find Them, Just To Make Sure Little Mouths Don't Find Them First. My Purse Is Always Up On A Desktop, Trash Cans Are All Behind Cabinet Doors, Except For One. And I Never Thought About It Being Problem, But You Never Know.... It Is Now Gone. Good Thread.... |
