Please say a prayer for my Max Toni and I were out all day yesterday and when we came home we found about 4 puddles of vomit. It didn’t long to realize out it was Max as he did it again on my lap. We kept an eye on him and he seemed lethargic. We coaxed him into taking a few sips of water because we were worried about dehydration. He threw that up a few minutes later. When he spit out a cheerio I gave him we knew this was more than an upset stomach. I took him to the emergency vet at about 11 last night and after running blood work his ALT (liver function) was crazy high at 832 (norm is 10-120). His pancreas levels are normal. The doc said that if he possibly ingested a Tylenol this could do it but we are very careful with all our meds in the house. They recommended keeping him and putting him on IV to flush out his liver if it was something he ingested. So I left him at about 4 am last night in the arms of the vet tech. After seeing him struggle in her arms to get back to my arms, I cried the entire ride home. I am hoping that it was just something he ate and that the numbers will come back down. I don’t know what I’ll do if something happens to my baby. And poor Sasha is besides herself. I knew they were close but I never realized just how dependent she is on him. Toni stayed home with Sasha while I went to the vet and she said Sasha just kept staring at the door and barking for Max to come in. We both had to go to work today and we are watching her on the nest cam and she is just sitting on the rug in the kitchen staring at the door. It tears me apart to see her like that. I talked to the vet a little while ago and she said Max seems to be doing well. He is alert and has not thrown up since I brought him in. They will do another blood test at 7 pm tonight to check his level again. I will be on pins and needles until then. |
Poor Max. I'm glad you got him to the vet and I hope everything is better when they do the blood work. I feel for you about Sasha, when I take Callie to the vet Joey crys the whole time we are gone even though his new little sister is with him and my grandmother. Keeping Max in my prayers. |
I'm so sorry to hear about Max. Praying for you,Toni and Sasha as well. Hopefully you will have an update soon! |
Thinking of you and Max and hoping his levels return to normal. |
Hope an pray max gets back to good health ASAP |
Hoping you have had some good news on Max, keeping sweet lil boy in my prayers. |
Waiting for news! So very concerned! |
Thinking of you and Max...I hope he is on the mend and your next update is good news. Will send positive thoughts to your family and Sasha and healing thoughts to Max. |
Praying for that baby and you. |
Yeah, can't get Max out of my head tonight. |
All your positive thoughts and prayers have worked! We just went and picked him up from the vet. His ALT which was at 832 (norm 10-120) is down to 502. His GGT went from 31 to 20 (norm 0-11). His TBIL was 2.5 and went down to 0.3 (norm 0.0-0.9)He is no where near 100% but with that big of a decrease the vet was comfortable letting us take him home. They have him on 2 antibiotics - metronidazole & clavamox. We will be feeding him a pureed mixture of boiled chicken and white rice for a few days and will have his blood work done again in 3 days with our regular vet. The bottom line is he is home with us and hopefully on the mend. When I called the vet earlier to get the results I had the vet on speaker so we both could listen. When she told us he could come home we both started crying. We have been so worried since last night. When Toni told her boss was this was costing us he said "You spent that much on a dog?" Only a dog lover would understand. I think the highlight of the night for me was when they brought Max out. We had taken Sasha with us and Toni was holding her. They handed Max to me and he gave me a very quick lick and then leaned over and the 2 of them started licking each other's face like there was no tomorrow! I wish I had a camera! Thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers. They meant the world to me! |

I'm happy that Max improved! What is the reason for the antibiotics? Did the vet find some source of infection that would have explained the elevated liver numbers? Hope all continues to improve. |
How very scary for you. I'm happy to see he is on the mend & I pray he continues to improve & all is well in no time. |
So very happy Max is home and on the mend, although he is not 100% he is improving. Toni's boss's comment does not surprise me one bit. I've been hearing that for years, you get use to it. I am just grateful that veterinary care has escalated over the last 20 years, there are procedures and meds available today that were not 20 years ago. A non dog lover does not understand that these are our babies that depend on us to care for their every needs. Your heart must have just about burst when Max and Sasha greeted each other, isn't it a beautiful sight to see how much two pups can love each other. keeping Max in my prayers for a full recovery. |
Happy happy he is on the mend :)! |
Great to hear that :) |

He still has a way to go. He is definitely not his happy crazy self. Very subdued and quiet. But that should be expected. He is eating the chicken/rice mixture. We are giving him small amounts 4-6 hours apart and he has not thrown it up so we are optimistic. They had all the fluids going in to him through an IV and he is peeing like a race horse! Thank you all again! |

Poor lil Max, at least he is home where there is no stress and he is eating and able to hold it down, that is a good sign. Keeping lil boy in my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery. |
My boy looks to be getting better every day. I would say he is back to about 70% of his normal self. They sleep with us every night and we take them downstairs in the morning for them to do their business and after they are done we go upstairs to get ready for work. I always laughed because when we come back down 30 minutes later Max is always jumping up and down like he has not seen us in 2 weeks. For the last couple of days he has been standing at the gate wagging his tail but the usual energy was not there. Today the springs were back in place and he was jumping like he was on a pogo stick again! He will go to our regular vet tomorrow for follow up blood work and we are hoping for the best. |
Hope it's good News |
You must have been thrilled to see all that hoping, what a fantastic sign. Hope tomorrows vet visit gives him a clean bill of health. Sure would be nice to know what the heck happened to him. |
Ah, so glad to hear there is some spring coming back to the pogo stick jumper! Just can't stand it when our little ones are under the weather. |
I have never been so happy to see him bring me his ball so we could play. |
Praying for continuing improvement.... |
Just checking in to see how Max is doing!! |
Hoping to hear good news on Max's vet visit. |
