Cali apparently had a major acute pancreatitis attack. Reason unknown, it have a couple vague ideas. On the second day of profuse vomiting and diarrhea I headed for the emergency vet clinic where they put her immediately into ICU where she spent 4 days. At first they were very tentative as her enzymes were off the chart. Her enzymes improved greatly in the first day and then gradually from there. Ultra sound and X-ray confirmed a pancreas issue. She was so pathetic those 4 days- I wasn't even sure she knew me when I went to see her 3-4 times a day. On the 5 day I brought her home and the pain meds kept her totally snowed! I had to hold her up to urinate VIP ecause she kept falling over. So I started weaning her off over the next 4 days and her ability to get around improved tremendously! Even though she was weak she was getting around better and much more alert so progress seemed to come faster. She is not very fond of the pancreatic prescription food but we are working on that. I see progress daily and am more encouraged. Now we are waiting for the next blood work. Strength is coming slowly and I don't perceive any pain. She seem to sleep a lot but I think that is part of the recovery. It is suspected that my neighbor sprayed Round Up week killer along the fence between our properties and apparently she got a heavy dose. She was licking her feet a lot those two days she started throwing up at the beginning. At 3.8 pounds I guess it did not take much. Liver and kidney seem to be fine but will continue to assess. So now she is eating and eliminating well and is getting stronger. Guess that is about the story. I am much encourage now compared to at the beginning. We just have to weight to see if the episode was acute or if it has progressed to chronic. Thanks for asking about her! |
Praying for Cali and hope she gets stronger everyday. |
Just checking in to see if the prednisone and gaba are helping Wylie? Prayers and hugs continue! |
How is sweet Marcel doing? Did you get to do the acupuncture appt? |
Ann, I read this whole thread and my heart goes out to Marcel and you. I can imagine how much you just want to fix this problem for your little guy, make him all better. Sending positive thoughts for Marcel and you. |

I'm sending lots of healing vibes to Marcel and hugs to Ann and family. I know your heart is aching every day that you don't have and answer and continue to worry about your little guy. Hope answers and solutions come soon! |
Oh my gosh Jay - poor little Cali!!! How scary; pancreatitis is really a tough one and I hope she is feeling a bit better every single day, poor precious one . ------------------------------ Had Marcel's first acupuncture app't on Thursday and Oh.My.Gosh. - what an utterly wonderful vet, WOW! Just looooved her. She truly balances East/West medicine and takes the best of both. So thorough. Did a wonderful range of motion exam on Marcel - way better exam than even the Neuro vet. She was able to put in about 8 needles and then me and Marcel sat for 20 minutes. Following that, she did some cold laser therapy on his back. I'll do a total of 6 treatments, then assess. But I swear when we got home after the appt, his gait was slightly smoother - the limp slightly less pronounced. Interesting... Thanks everyone, for thinking of my precious man . |
Jay, I'm horrified to read about what happened to tiny, athletic Cali, such a little go-getter and to be so taken down out of nowhere and so suddenly! How frightening and horrifying that a tiny little dog can be taken down to the point of death due to some action like spraying weedkiller next door by a neighbor! But Yorkies can be so hardy through such horrible illness and hand in there and heal when all hope seems so dim! They are an amazing breed. I know you were petrified and obviously so brave that you didn't just collapse under the stress and strain like I'm pretty sure I would have. I'm so glad you have your little Cali back home and she's getting better. Like Linda said, pancreatitis is so scary! Thanks for posting the story. If I see anybody in my neighborhood out doing ANY kind of spraying, I know to keep Tibbe in the house until it rains and rains and still keep him in the middle of his own yard for as long as possible and bathe his feet, legs after every trip outside to potty just in case!!! Ann, good to hear of your good experience with the acupuncturist/vet and full exam he got with Marcel and smoothing of his gait some. Did he have any additional ideas of what is going on with him? After so long, that seems a pretty good outcome! Hoping and praying Marcel feels better soon. Stay strong, you and Marcel. |
I have heard good things about acupuncture so am wishing great success for Marcel! Keep us posted! --------------- Did not mean to hitch-jack Marcel's post with Cali's stuff, Sorry! |

Ann, I am very happy to read that the acupuncture and cold laser therapy had a positive result. I hope successive treatments bring even better news. One of my Facebook friend's Yorkies had a severe back problem and recovered fully with the help of acupuncture. If my boys have problems in the future, I will definitely give it a try. I am continuing to send your sweet little Marcel lots of positive thoughts. |

I was a total skeptic when it came to acupuncture but my mom swears by it. I had shooting pain in my right wrist & hand for weeks (this was years ago) & was afraid that I needed carpal tunnel surgery. Decided to get acupuncture w/ mom's suggestion, so tried it, not believing it will work. The whole process was painless & relaxing, got to take a nice nap w/ the heat lamp on my hand... I was pain free! Didn't even go back for 2nd treatment. Best of all, pain never came back. My old vet (b4 we moved) offered acupuncture in his practice. Great for elderly arthritic pets too. |
