And now.... I gave specialist all the details. Blood levels normal, no fever, he did go a 24 hour period without food or water, was getting fluids through IV, no pain or bloating in belly, but a bad bladder infection. Heart rate, breathing rate, everything else has been completely fine as well. He agreed to wait for now on the antibiotics for the bladder infection. The combination of no fever, no belly pain and normal lipase and amylase levels didn't give him cause to see him immediately. Sounds like a plan! I do hope he starts to feel better once the bladder infection is showing improvement. It is all interesting.....bladder infections are not that common in male dogs. |
Oh, and yes the amylase and lipase are usually elevated with pancreatitis.....but interestingly they can be elevated and it not be pancreatitis. It is always good to do a cPLI when they are elevated....and I would think maybe even if not elevated if the symptoms were there. If he is eating and not vomiting now, it is doubtful. I am glad that you found a specialist you could speak with! |
Current status. He's been home since 3 yesterday. They gave him both a quick/short and slow/long acting steroid to try and help with his appetite as well as injection for the infection. He hasn't thrown up again, has been drinking water, but just not interested in food. He did give my wife a bit of a happy tail wag once yesterday, but otherwise he's still just kind of down and just wants to lay in his bed. We've tried the baby food, nutrical, boiled chicken, everything we can think of on the food, but smells it and turns his head away. We did have to give his medicine (ground up) in a bit of peanut butter this morning, so that was an ordeal. Will be giving both the vet and specialist an update today. The no vomiting is definitely promising, now if we can just get him to eat something. |
You might want to ask about Mirtazapine. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it is amazing at increasing appetites. Liquid meds are helpful, but now that you have bought the others it might be a waste of money because hopefully he will be eating soon. |
I think I would be at the specialist at this point. The thing that continues to bother me is a male puppy with a "bad" UTI. As I had said before, UTIs are really not common in males and I would want more information on that...could be something else going on. |
Also, this might be a long shot, but have they done bile acid testing on him? Liver shunts and MVD can show up in non typical ways and because they are fairly common in yorkies I think it is good to test any time they have some kind of "mysterious" symptoms. I am assuming they didn't see any urate crystals in his urine, but could he have stones? Maybe I am way off base, but might be worth asking about. |
Apparently specialist and my vet were actually in contact overnight. They went through all of his tests together. UTI more than likely developed during the neuter and specialist thinks it might have been trying to go septic. No crystals in his urine. Frodo going to spend the day at the vet today, and wait for the cPLI results to come in and they are going to see if they can get him eating as well as monitoring the UTI. Specialist is in waiting, being advised of everything today and vet will actually bring him there today if necessary. Vet and specialist when to school together years ago, so kind of worked out. Anyways, he's in good hands today as they will be doing some more specialized testing if needed. Oh, and I did inquire about the bile acid test..thanks! |
Well, that's good. I am glad they are in touch and discussing his case. The reason I suggest specialists is that, in my experience, they usually have a diagnosis in a day or two. They don't look for one thing at a time. It is pricey but in the end, they get to the bottom of things quicker. They take a thorough history and make a list of all possibilities and start testing. It doesn't mean that a vet isn't good...it is just that the specialists see more weird and/or complicated things. That UTI probably did occur during the neuter....if you read about UTIs in male dogs you will see it just isn't a common thing. The bile acid testing really is a stretch. It was just "a thought". They may think it is simply not necessary to do. Hopefully, it will all be figured out quickly and Frodo will be on the mend!! :) |

He was 8.6 lbs last Friday and was 8 lbs exactly today, so definitely lost some weight. He was 8.2 on Tuesday after the really bad Sunday/Monday vomiting, so luckily hasn't lost too much more since then, which is a bit surprising since he hasn't been eating anything aside from what they gave him at the vet. |
Some good news. He had spent all day Friday at the vet, getting fluids and some various medications for the infection. Specialist ran a few more tests and all came back negative except for the UTI, which he confirmed. We picked him up yesterday morning and he was actually showing a bit of excitement to see us. Wasn't interested in food, so we had to give him Nutrical through the day and then some Gerbers chicken and rice a couple times. But he kept it all down, and showed a bit of excitement when our oldest son came home from work, which was another good sign. This morning, wasn't interested in food again, so we gave him is Nutrical, and then his medication in some peanut butter. Then about 15 minutes later he decided to eat a piece of his own kibble. Over the past couple hours he's ate a piece here and there, about 10 in total so far. Came home from grocery store, and he actually met me at the door like he normally does, although not quite as excited, but just the fact that he got out of his bed and came to the door was great to see. So, I think we're trending in the right direction. At least doing much better than before. |
