We are home! She's still kind of groggy and sleepy but the vet said the tramadol and the last few days away may make her really tired tonight. We talked to the vet in depth about her blood pressure and we decided to bring her home without meds tonight and made a follow up for tomorrow (I guess Tuesday) appointment at 2:30am to have the blood pressure checked again. We decided on that time for a few reasons 1. Husband works until midnight during the week 2. The vet suggested a quitter time with less people and calmer and 3. The a/c in our car is broken and it is hot and humid here so night time means the sun won't be beating down on her and making her hot and stressed in the car. Once we get the number tomorrow we will decide about the meds. We stayed on the canned food they were feeding her there. I was wrong, it wasn't I/D, it is Royal Canin gastro low fat and not chicken based. They said to keep her on wet food for a little until we know she is able to keep food down and is getting enough hydration. Good news is we came home and opened the can and she was spinning in circles and ate about 2tbsps happily and finally had a bowel movement! It wasn't green and was solid! After she ate she got a little sleepy and just wanted to go to the bed so she's been out like a light since then. Trying to leave her alone so I set up a camera to film her. I'm paranoid she is going to throw up or something so I kept bugging her and figured filming her would satisfy my knowing what she has been doing but leave her alone to rest. I am so glad she is home but still sad that she seems so off. But her wobbles aren't as bad and she's walking her normal way. We are still going to follow up with her vet but want to have her blood pressure checked in a less stressful environment. If we lived closer, they do home visits to test in their normal environment. We will be asking our vet or a vet around us if they offer that option as well if she needs it checked regularly. She panics and pants and whines as soon as we are in a waiting room of a vet. But right now I am happy they felt she was good enough to come home, has at least eaten once for me here and had a bowel movement. |
Woohoo...wonderful news! She may seem a bit off because she is probably really exhausted. Hospitals do that to humans and animals! :) The Tramadol also could be making her that way. Happy she is spinning around and eating! :) RC Low Fat is a great food! :) You might want to consider keeping her on it. For a pup who is stressed out like her, having the owner hold them often is better when doing B/P checks. My Olivia is like that....one day they had her in the back taking her B/P and it was really high. They called me back and it was fine once she was in my arms! I am so sure she is happy to be home...the camera is a great idea so she can rest. She needs it. I am sure you do, too! |
Happy to hear your baby is home and shows improvement. Camera was a great idea, baby is tired from stress I am sure. After a good nights sleep in HER home I am sure tomorrow she will be more spunky. Now you can get some rest. |
Today she was her usual self! Just left the vet for a blood pressure recheck and it is now 170, still high but better than 190 yesterday morning and 220 Saturday afternoon. We have an order in for more food but this vet confused me so will talk to someone else tomorrow there. He said it wouldn't make a difference but the vet yesterday recommended the kibble and trying it out and seeing how she handles it even though it has chicken in it. He said something about ash levels and either hills was strict or royal Canin was strict about the ash levels. Should we attempt the low fat gastro by royal Canin dry and see how she does on that? She isn't happy with only wet food right now as keeps barking at the place her bag of food is usually kept and has been hunting for buried kibbles, so we do need to get her on something dry as well. I am happy it is lower than yesterday but wish it was normal. Hopefully will get there. He brought up meds and said we would talk tomorrow about that. My husband is wondering if they will take the wait and watch approach because it went down again, and maybe they at hoping it will go down more on its own while she's home. |
I would think the RC kibble should be fine. Maybe run it by your vet? SO happy to hear she is doing better! Even the B/P doesn't sound all that bad ... but I do suggest you get that urine tested to make sure she isn't losing protein. (or just run it by your vet) PLN is sneaky and often missed. I have two pups with it and they are on Enalapril which helps to keep their B/P down. It also slows down the progression of the PLN. The fact her blood work is good but I would still check it out. |
Thanks, we will likely pick up the bag of food tonight and see what happens. Hopefully she doesn't react badly to it. I am trying to have the urine tested but my husband has dug his heels in at the moment. It will be another $150 to run that test apparently and with our bill over $1000 already with no way to pay it off, he is against it. I am nowhere near ready to throw in the towel on spending money on her but there's not much I can do at this point because his parents have drilled into him over and over again that he is the one that makes the money so he is the one that decides how to spend it. I think that is bullcrap so I am trying to convince him. I currently have a few messages out to people asking to borrow some money for the test but so far I keep getting "she's just a dog"...she's not just a dog! I looked up PLN and it looks terrifying. And a lot of the symptoms seem to apply to her so now I am terrified she has it and we aren't doing anything about it. I know it appears there isn't much to do for it but at least her kidneys are functioning fine in her blood work so maybe we could slow things down if we knew. I uderstand why vets have to charge but I hate it at the same time. I hate having to spend the obligatory $80 to be seen every time when it is regarding an ongoing issue. It frustrates me that we don't need to have her checked out, just her urine as a follow up test to this weekend but we will still have to pay the fee. I am just being whiny right now as I am frustrated and just want to know that she is okay or know that we need to make some changes for her. |
I sure pray everything works out for you and your baby. You are trying really hard. No you are not being whiny! My last little Yorkie (RIP) lived two years with GME. It was thoundsands & thoundsands of $. We were at Vets & Vets & U.T. Vet Hospital constantly. Every time we went for follow-ups, treatments, blood work, stomach issues, poopy issues, paw problems, anything at all, they all charged us like it was his first rodeo. No break in money what's so ever. It was so frustrating coming up with the money and sacred to death about my baby. Everyone did go over & beyond for my angel, but in the long run it's all about the money. Another thing during all this. I would sit and wait for hours crying my eyes out and no one seemed to care. Prays for you. |

Here is a thread about my Olivia....this was from 2012 and she is doing fine! She is on Enalapril and Lostartin .. but they don't all need two meds. She did because her B/P needed more control. She was up to 240. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...phropathy.html My Rookie was also diagnosed with it and is on Enalapril. Enalapril is not very expensive. |

Praying for your baby, I know the feeling months ago my furbaby was vomiting blood and pooping with blood in stool; diarrhea not eating I rushed her to vet.... they hooked her up ran blood work, xrays and kept her overnight... she was dehydrated and everything came back negative thank goodness!! Seems she just ate something unknown... At first it seemed it was something toxic, but it was okay in the end... I did change her diet as her stomach is sensitive so I feed her id wet food with probiotics and add some ground turkey and rice to her diet and seems to be doing well these days. Never had another bad incident... |
Will do a bette update later but in a hurry right now. Having a rough night. Sophie is doing well and eating and acting like herself but followed up with her vet today and they couldn't get a consistent reading (jumped around like crazy at one point was 171 and another was 290 but then right after that was 175). Vet said little dogs need a Doppler because the little cuff doesn't always fit the under 6lbs babies so they can't treat the blood pressure without an accurate reading. Said with her vitals and blood work being normal they don't think we need to rush anything and to follow up again next week and see if they can get a better reading. But if they can't, she has to go to a cardiologist and that's where we can't afford anymore and then I don't know what happens. I've failed her if that's the case. I asked about urine and they said that they can just do the stick if I want and then if it shows protein they would send it in for the full urinalysis. They didn't do it tonight because they were already closed by the time we were in there with them. She did say based on her history that they aren't thinking of PLN but they could test to at least rule it out. We haven't given her kibble yet and have kept her on the wet food for now. Figured we want her tummy to rest for right now and she seems to be handling it well. I don't want to lose her :( |
It sounds like she is doing very well!! Keep your chin up and think positive!! Continued prayers....thanks so much for updating!! |
Hi. I'm so sorry for you lil yorkie. I have a lil yorkie with chronic colitis. I understand all too well how you feel. I'll say a prayer for your little one. Mine is sick n vomiting today. I may have to give her some honey water to bring her blood sugar up. I have to feed her a no fat mix of ppl food. Keep us updated. 💛 |
1 Attachment(s) I wrote a post awhile ago but I guess it got lost. So I will try again... This will hopefully be my last update for awhile. Sophie had her 1 week follow up for her blood pressure. Recap - at er vet it spiked to 220, was 190 the morning we brought her home and then 24 hours later was 170. Last week took her to out regular vet and the numbers were all over the place, so they said they weren't trusting any of the numbers and to follow up this week. I took ladyjane's advice and held her this time in the room they have set up like a living room. I don't like that room as it is also the room they use for people and their pets to be comfortable when they have to put their little one to sleep, but it turns out it is also used for blood pressure and other things they want the pet relaxed for. Her first reading was 177, second reading was 156 and third reading was 137 (if my other post shows up, I think I actually wrote them backwards but this one is right lol). So the vet has said she thinks no further testing is necessary as she is acting normal, eating and not as wobbly (always a little wobbly and weird gait after knee surgeries). She said 177 doesn't worry her with small anxious dogs, especially when the other readings were within the normal range. Her treatment plan right now is random blood pressure checks (with me holding her!) and BP will be something they check every time she goes in to keep an eye on it. Talked about a urinalysis again and the vet says at this point they are pretty comfortable believing the chew bone we gave her caused the upset and then her blood pressure was from being stressed out/in pain. But if it happens again, it will be done alongside more bloodwork. She has her annual visit in October and we might do it then just to rule it out but right now our vet thinks we should take comfort in her normal labs and BP being lower than before. I don't work so I spend the majority of my time with her, so I will be watching her like a hawk and the first sign of anything she will be going to the vet! Right now though, I am happy and relieved that it showed improvement. We are now trying to find food for her though. She seems unimpressed with the canned RC low fat and our vet said she can transition back to her old food if we want but we aren't sure. Hopefully this is a sign that my week will be a good one, with good news! I get my pathology results on Friday. Thank you to everyone that contributed to this post and especially ladyjane and all of her advice. I don't think I could have gotten through all of this without this place. It is amazing to have somewhere to go that people don't tell me she's just a dog. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road and we now know that she will no longer have chews but will keep a close eye on her for any signs of something going wrong again in case it wasn't chew related and is a symptom of something going wrong. Here is a picture of the monkey butt from the other night. She was freshly groomed and ready for a nap! I love her so much :) |
