Trachea issues and Adequan Does anyone have experience using this for Treachea or CT? Pros and Cons? Going to vet tomorrow have a video of him honking and trying to get air. Had a Yorkie before that had episodes of CT so know the sound. This Yorkie is very young but wonder if starting him on this would hurt at all. Tks. |
Some people claim it helps, but I am skeptical. Don't think it could hurt. I hope it turns out your pup doesn't have CT. |

how old is your baby? how often is he honking? did you contact the breeder to ask for their input? |

An interesting medication that works for some is Lomotil. Here is an article from Kirk's Vet Manual about it (click on the links on the page). You need an RX for it. Index of /lomotil Basic meds that are often used can be torbugesic, hycodan, Temeril P, Prednisone ...and they even use a combo of torbugesic and ace pro for severe symptoms on an as needed basis. If you might be interested in participating in a study of Antinol, message me and I can get you in touch with a specialist who is doing it. There have been some anecdotal reports that is does help with CT. I don't know if it is only for local to Houston folks or if he will do other states. Can't hurt to inquire. |

Yes the breeder is wonderful and known her for 17 years. |
I just meant did the breeder have advice or input on which medication? Not whether or not she was nice. |

My comments are based on years of experience with pups with different degrees of CT. I am not so sure this pup has CT .. coughing and/or honking on occasion is not a perfect way to determine it. There are so many other things this could be. If it were my pup, I would just do a flouroscopy and know for sure what I was dealing with. |
Ahhh very interesting...I guess I figured long term breeders would have input, didn't realize they wouldn't- thanks for the input! |

A good breeder simply isn't going to have experience with such issues. They may have some information but IMHO experience beats reading all day long. |

At this point that is all they have with Antinol...anecdotal reports. The problem with that is that these dogs' symptoms often wax and wane and people can be lulled into believing something worked because the symptoms may have decreased following dosing with the meds. I am pleased that they are considering a study with the Antinol. |
BTW what "scope" is this breeder talking about?? |

Again, I recommend a flouroscopy for a diagnosis. CT can be diagnosed by Xray but is not always picked up depending on inspiration and expiration. If the xray shows it, it is conclusive; but, if it doesn't show it could still be there. Flouroscopy visualizes the pup during inspiration and expiration so they can see how the trachea really is functioning. https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/tracheal-collapse |

We started Adequan today, one shot a week for 8 weeks then once a month. Will post progress regarding the use of this medication. |
Chester had a ultrasound done of the chest to confirm his CT |
Update on Luke, We started on the shots one a week for 8 weeks, then we went to every other week. My vet assured us that this injection was extremely safe and no side effects. We have continue with the every two weeks and his honk is not as much as it was in the beginning. He only had one major CT attack so far and that was before we started the shots. We are very careful with him and when we see he is getting excited pick him up and try to devert his attention. It still pains my heart that we can't take him a lot of places to avoid the bark/honk. He is diag as very mild CT at this time. He had one small last growing pain and went from 3lb 6oz to 3lb 9oz and with the Adequan in his system we hope it helped. Vet told us that the clinical signs of less honking was very good. We know that this is something we will have to do for the rest of his life. He is so sweet, laid back little beautiful boy, and doesn't even care or make a fuss about his shot. I would advise that if you can catch this early, it may be something to consider. At this stage believe it has helped Luke along with us being proactive. |
Glad to hear he is doing well |
Happy to hear all is well. :) |
Hi - I have 5 yo diagnosed Jan 2019 (2 xrays) honking when humid and after a walk - he is not that excitable (I know everyone can’t believe he is a Yorkie all say wow so calm) but I guess if overheated and excited he will honk. Currently doing Hydrocodone (every other week or so) and prednisone (2x since Jan) then as needed. Been told mild case. But he js 5. My breeder said do nothing no prednisone Yorkies make noises. But since most say it’s congenital not sure what they would say. Anyway was thinking of trying Adequan since the trachea is cartilage and Adequan supports/helps cartilage. I have read if u want to try Adequan for CT needs to be in less advanced cases to help. My vet said couldn’t hurt (min side effects) just scared am new to the CT sounds etc. I have to say to me it’s a sound he still wants to run and play and doesn’t seem to be gasping for air. He runs he honks?? Hate to stop him from playing but all I have read is you need to stop them from making that noise - I guess the more they do it the more harm to the trachea. Any way should I seek treatments or leave him alone - is this just the behavior of a CT dog? |
