Medial Petellar Luxaction My furbaby is 1-1/2 year and recently thought she might have fractured or suffered sprain as she was not able to walk on her hind legs, which eventually took it's toll on her with depression, not eating, sleeping a lot. So the next day I took her to vet to complete x-ray. Upon examination doctor found her Petella out of place (bone popped out); after x-ray it was confirmed that indeed both back legs were inherited this by parent(s). It is also common among small breed dogs. My vet gave me a referral for surgeon/orthopedic to discuss possible options of medication for life or surgery. My question is, has anyone gone through this?? What was the outcome and how much does something like this cost? |
Daisy is only 4 months and the vet caught it already! She has is very very very minor but nothing has happened yet. I know my vet said you can give some sort of supplement to your pup to help it. I don't remember exactly what because Daisy is still too young to take it. Definitely as your vet what supplement you can give your pup to help little! |
They have her in pain medication but referred me to specialist. Supplement won't help. It's already occurred in both her back legs. Thank you tho. |
Yes it's an inherited condition. I would follow up and if the surgeon recommends surgery I would proceed. My dog was 2 when she had the surgery and she's now almost 16 and lived a great life without pain. I don't believe supplements help this issue. |

If the surgery is recommended, I'd do it. Our Wylie went thru it and he did just great! |
Thank you Thanks... great advice everyone. Right now I'm researching costs... need to figure out a way to get it done. Will be seeing specialist in next 2 weeks for guidance. Thank you all! |
Kaira has had her left knee done and may need the right later on. The repaired knee has been awesome. She blew the knee out suddenly and could not walk at all, so it was definitely a needed procedure, and she healed quickly. |
Patellar Luxation is unfortunately all too common. Whether surgery is required depends on the severity. It can range from grade 1 to grade 4, with 4 being the worst. Jezebel had grade two, and I never saw her have any problems until she came up limping one morning. She had torn a ligament in her left knee, and she had TPLO surgery 9 days later to fix the ligament, and the surgeon fixed the LP at the same time. Her surgeon did not recommend doing anything to the other knee that still has grade 2 LP. It has never caused her any problems and I've never seen her walk or run in a way that indicates that it has slipped out. He says that if he fixed it, the dog sometimes tears their ligament and then he has to go back in for a second surgery. She had the surgery three years ago and she is doing great. At her vet visit in February, her vet said that both knees felt exactly the same so there was absolutely no arthritis. It sounds like from your pup's symptoms that it is one of the higher grades. Kudos to you for getting her to an ortho for a consult. |
Thank you.... |
Even though it is genetic, a supplement won't hurt. I have my kids on green lipped mussel for their joints. Cost usually runs about 1200 per knee. You MAY be able to find it for less, however, make sure the vet who does it is experienced with the procedure and not cutting corners. I am fortunate my regular, long time vet is familiar with the procedure and was the one who did it on my little girl. |

That's awesome about your insurance coverage. Now let's hope your pup will have a new lease on life! |
I was just told my 5 year old female needed both knees done-if they do them together t are estimating $7,700 which huge amount of money to me Does his sound out of range to anyone? I know I'll be getting the surgery, but I was deciding if should get second opinion... Thanks! |

My furbaby is a year and a half and was quoted $3,000 in California for both hind knees.... Hope all goes well! I would get a second estimate... not sure if it's due to age? |
Update..... Quote:
After pre-anesthetic blood work, found out her liver level is high.... 376; so need to try and find cause and work on lowering her level before they will consider operation for her knees...... Today they did coagulation tests and tomorrow ultra sound.... stay tuned... hope nothing serious. My fur babys health and spirits have been suffering. |
Prayers go out to your family end your Yorkie-baby. Hopefully they'll find out what's wrong and find a solution so you all can heal soon. I've found a vet in Rancho Cucamonga to do a 2nd opinion on Saturday, fingers crossed that it's more reasonable, so we can get her scheduled soon |

Thank you. |
Hope the testing for her liver goes well so she can have this knee repair soon! |
Update **** Unfortunately surgery was put on hold due to elevated liver enzymes; my baby has been on medicine for past month and is due back on Wednesday this week to re-check your liver enzymes count. Previously over 300 / normal about 120. My fur baby has her good days and bad... but making her as comfortable as possible. Hard for a one and half year old to be inactive.... Okay, will keep you posted!! Thanks |
Update **** Baby just had her surgery over a week ago and is doing great..... This Saturday she will be going in and removing her stiches on her back legs. She's moving around and I couldn't be happier for my fur baby. |
Oh, that's great! Happy to hear that all is going well! :) |

If I may ask, how much did it cost you? I'm sure will be more now but wondering what to expect? My Yorkie is 7 years old and only 3 pounds. Can she handle such a surgery? Quote:

Where did you take her and how much did surgery cost? I'm planning to take Molly for ortho consult next week to Northside Hospital in San Bernardino. Quote:

Luxating Patella Took my fur baby to pick Rivera animal hospital. Both hind legs cost $3300. Luckily I had pet insurance so out of pocket was about 400 plus dollars. |
