Medial Petellar Luxaction My furbaby is 1-1/2 year and recently thought she might have fractured or suffered sprain as she was not able to walk on her hind legs, which eventually took it's toll on her with depression, not eating, sleeping a lot. So the next day I took her to vet to complete x-ray. Upon examination doctor found her Petella out of place (bone popped out); after x-ray it was confirmed that indeed both back legs were inherited this by parent(s). It is also common among small breed dogs. My vet gave me a referral for surgeon/orthopedic to discuss possible options of medication for life or surgery. My question is, has anyone gone through this?? What was the outcome and how much does something like this cost? |
Daisy is only 4 months and the vet caught it already! She has is very very very minor but nothing has happened yet. I know my vet said you can give some sort of supplement to your pup to help it. I don't remember exactly what because Daisy is still too young to take it. Definitely as your vet what supplement you can give your pup to help little! |
They have her in pain medication but referred me to specialist. Supplement won't help. It's already occurred in both her back legs. Thank you tho. |
Yes it's an inherited condition. I would follow up and if the surgeon recommends surgery I would proceed. My dog was 2 when she had the surgery and she's now almost 16 and lived a great life without pain. I don't believe supplements help this issue. |

Kaira has had her left knee done and may need the right later on. The repaired knee has been awesome. She blew the knee out suddenly and could not walk at all, so it was definitely a needed procedure, and she healed quickly. |
Patellar Luxation is unfortunately all too common. Whether surgery is required depends on the severity. It can range from grade 1 to grade 4, with 4 being the worst. Jezebel had grade two, and I never saw her have any problems until she came up limping one morning. She had torn a ligament in her left knee, and she had TPLO surgery 9 days later to fix the ligament, and the surgeon fixed the LP at the same time. Her surgeon did not recommend doing anything to the other knee that still has grade 2 LP. It has never caused her any problems and I've never seen her walk or run in a way that indicates that it has slipped out. He says that if he fixed it, the dog sometimes tears their ligament and then he has to go back in for a second surgery. She had the surgery three years ago and she is doing great. At her vet visit in February, her vet said that both knees felt exactly the same so there was absolutely no arthritis. It sounds like from your pup's symptoms that it is one of the higher grades. Kudos to you for getting her to an ortho for a consult. |

Even though it is genetic, a supplement won't hurt. I have my kids on green lipped mussel for their joints. Cost usually runs about 1200 per knee. You MAY be able to find it for less, however, make sure the vet who does it is experienced with the procedure and not cutting corners. I am fortunate my regular, long time vet is familiar with the procedure and was the one who did it on my little girl. |

Update My fur baby has seen her surgeon and we have scheduled her surgery next week 5/24/16; on both hind legs. Wish us luck!! Cost $3,000 Currently, awaiting insurance coverage. |

I was just told my 5 year old female needed both knees done-if they do them together t are estimating $7,700 which huge amount of money to me Does his sound out of range to anyone? I know I'll be getting the surgery, but I was deciding if should get second opinion... Thanks! |
