Encephalitis My 4.5 yr old female(spayed) yorkie has been diagnosed with encephalitis. First part of treatment was Antibiotics and steroids, for 2 weeks. Once we started to decrease the steroids her symptoms came back and we almost lost her..The vet wanted to put her down ,right there..I was not going to give up with out a fight. He took her and with in 36 hours she was back to "normal". Our vet has never treated an animal for this and he promised he will do all that he can to learn to treat her.. She is now on 5mg twice a day of predisone.. It's been a week and I can slowly see some of the signs.. I will be calling him again in the morning for a check up... My reason for posting is, i am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and what their treatment and outcome..Thank you for any response :) |
Years ago, I had a little dog with this issue....my vet at that time had not ever treated a pet with that disease, so I took that at face value and beat a trail to A&M Vet School....my baby was treated, survived and came home, where she lived out an additional 8 years. I was not comfortable letting this vet use my precious baby as his learning experience. |
My previous Yorkie had this. She was treated by a neurological specialist and loved a great life for 7 more years. She died at age 11 with renal failure, most probably due to the years of medications. |
Most definitely see a specialist. Mine was seen by the best Vet Hospital in the country University of Tennessee Vet Hospital. He had GME, which was in his brain. Lived 2 years. |
I'm sorry you are having to go through this. How was this baby diagnosed ? as there are other things that can have these symptoms & can only be diagnosed with MRI. In my opinion any dog with neurological symptoms such as this needs an MRI to both make a proper diagnosis & rule out other things. A misdiagnosis of anything going on in the brain can mean the diff between life & death for the dog. Praying for this baby. |

How is Sissy? Please keep us posted, good or bad. You are going to need someone to listen who has experienced this cruel disease |

To the OP, My Troy passed away from GME 3 years ago. I ended up putting him down once he became to lethargic to eat and drink. This is an awful disease with a poor prognosis and Shicks is right that its very expensive to maintain even for a little while. I do hope your pup is provided as much comfort as possible. I can say that after getting Emma, my breeder actually mentioned there's some research that suggests that some of the combination vaccines that are offered these days have contributed to neurological disorders in otherwise healthy small dogs. I've steered away from the combo vaccines and lepto for this reason. |

My little Ruger has had all his puppy shots minus lepto & kennel, he's now an adult and goes this week for an adult booster distemper & parvo. I'm very nervous, but my Vet promises me he needs an adult booster. My Vet knows all about loosing my Titan to GME, and how I hate these vaccines. What to do? Do you have your adults booster |
Last year I boosted , but I moved to MD and when she was due for shots my new vet gave her shots but nothing with a combo. She's fine so that may be an option for you . |

Sure, happy to help. I just asked my vet not to give combination vaccines and no lepto. At shot time, confirm that they aren't giving combo shots. I would also discuss if booster is an option for your puppy and highly suggest that is your preference because some vets will push the vaccines on you for profit. |

thank you! |
Sorry I haven't updated... Sissy made it past her 2 week mark (May 9th)..Every 2 weeks she was crashing and I had to rush her to the vet (3 times) The last time he switched her to dexamethsone from predasone, and so far so good. She has always been a low keyed girl, but she is a little sluggish towards the end of the day.. She is putting on a little weight, and I have to watch her eating ,she is over eating and her stomach gets bloated.. As for the boosters.. Other than her puppy shots, and the shots needed when she was spayed, she only gets the rabies shot every year. I feel blessed that we was given more time with her, and I pray I never have to make the decision to put her down. I still cry thinking of the day the vet asked me .. but.... I will do what is best for her when and if the time comes. |
What symptoms did your dogs display with this? Because the vet thinks theres a slight possibility Dave has encephalitis or meningitis. |

Than slowly started wondering around aimlessly Walking up against walls and what we later realized was her vision was impaired... As it progressed (at least 2 days)she would not sleep and circle the house non stop. It it truly a sad thing to see :( We have learned to not wait around and get her straight to the vet at the first sign. She has went 3 weeks and no crashing and her new medicine, dexamethasone :) Becoming a little fatty though..lol |

Update:...Last week the vet reduced Sissy's dose from 2 pills a day to one and she is doing great... Less sluggish and more back to her old self :)....We will probably go a few weeks and they want to try every other day..They want her on the lowest dosage,so less damage to her liver. |

Titan meds worked really fast. We were so happy & thankful it helped him be himself for almost two years. All the meds did take a toll on his little body. Still praying for Sissy. |
Still doing good :) |

My Remy is going through similar. I posted a little about it (sad news) and I will make a new thread because when we share info it helps others....like your post has helped me. I was told Remy had a brain tumor... it turns out she has encephalitis. She is doing well at this time... and I have hopes she will do well for a long time. Dr. Wong said 40% have full recover, another 40% do very well but have relapses ...we will see. |
