Another bite wound ... :( 4 Attachment(s) I am sure many of you will remember Summer from years ago with her horrible bite wounds...and then we had Lily Rose. Well now Yorkie Haven Rescue has a precious boy named Charlie. We have no idea what happened to him but it does look like he was bitten ... but there are scrapes all over that look like road burn. I am posting this to let people know that any time a pup is bitten by another animal it can get severely infected. The pup should be seen and treated immediately. I am also asking for prayers for Charlie as he is not out of the woods yet. He is in ICU at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston. To make my life easier tonight, I am just going to paste below the updates on Charlie that are posted on Facebook and on the YHR website....... 1/29/16 - Charlie was found in a yard yesterday and taken to a shelter. We were notified of him this morning and picked him up from the shelter. He has multiple bite wounds, bruised and was in shock. He has what appears to be road rash on feet and rear and a very swollen neck. Dehydrated. Blood sugar very low (26). Our vet checked him thoroughly, stabilized him for transport and referred him to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston where he has been admitted to ICU. Charlie is in critical (but stable for now) condition. His blood sugar and blood pressure are unstable. He may have some underlying health issues and he is being evaluated for that. He is on IV fluids and antibiotics. We will update as we hear more about him .. and about his testing. 1/30/16 - Charlie had surgery tonight to explore his wounds and debride them.. The surgeon called at 10 PM to let us know how things went. Poor Charlie had a very large area of necrosis on his neck. For now, it is closed up with a drain in it; but if the infection continues, he will lose more skin/tissue and that could present some real problems in terms of closing the wound. His antibiotics are being changed to something stronger until we get his infection under control. He will remain in ICU until he is physically stable and then will be moved to the surgery unit for wound care. He really needs prayers. 1/31/16 - Charlie is not yet out of the woods, but is hanging in. ------------------------------------------------- These photos were taken by the shelter and were what made me go get him...I was horrified when I saw them. :( He was almost unresponsive due to his hypoglycemia. He had been at the shelter since the day before with no meds...nothing. :( Was not even seen by a vet. Heartbreaking. Attachment 408908 Attachment 408909 Attachment 408910 Attachment 408911 |

4 Attachment(s) More photos of Charlie from today. Lolasmom1211 and lolassister met me halfway on Friday and took Charlie to GCVS and they visited him today. They are wonderful yorkie angels! I don't know what I would do without their help! They are also the Best Belly Bands ladies who do so much for the Haven pups! Attachment 408915 Attachment 408916 Attachment 408917 Attachment 408918 |

Poor little guy. Makes me want to cuddle up with him and heal his heart as well as his body. Sure hope he makes it. |
This saddens me so much! What a precious baby and shudder to think of what he went thru until he was found. I am praying for him. |
I sent you a pm Linda...... |
Oh my good lord - what on *earth* happened to this poor little angel baby...???!!!? This is so sad...but I'm so happy he is in your care now, oh my gosh. Just heartbreaking. I don't understand all these weird/odd wounds...they look so precision-cut or something..? I so hope someone didn't do this to him :(. |

It makes me sick to see that poor little guy. Prayers for his recovery and for it to be as painless as possible. |
This is so heartbreaking... I'm so glad he was given care. He looks like he would be such a little sweetheart. Prayers for Charlie |
I'm so glad he is now safe in your care, I hope he recovers from this awful ordeal. |
How is this baby doing today ? |
Poor Charlie had to have a feeding tube placed this afternoon. His blood sugar has been running around 115, but that is with 5% dextrose. He has refused all food. His incision is intact and the drainage is lessening which is good news. There is still a possibility he could lose more tissue but for now it is ok. I feel sick to my stomach that he is going through this. Lolasmom1211 and lolassister went to visit him today and took chicken but he just won't eat. :( I am going to try to visit him tomorrow. I know they are all good to the pups in the ICU there, but I think it is always nice for them to have visitors when they are ill. Poor Charlie. I hate that he is so ill. :( |
Those pictures break my heart, I am so sorry for that little guy, no dog should be in that much pain and discomfort. I am so sad for him but so happy that he is in your care and getting the help he needs. I will be hoping and praying that he will eat and is able to recover from the rest of his issues. Poor little guy, I just want to hug him. |
This breaks my heart for little Charlie! That is just pitiful! Prayers going up for Charlie for full recovery and a very happy home! Prayers and blessings to you and all that make up your team helping and loving these babies! |
Sending TONS of love and hope to our little Mr. Charlie - come on 'lil buddy, stay strong - bc you're on the way to the GOOD LIFE !!!! |
I hope that Charlie is doing better today. We appreciate all you do and that you keep us updated. Gentle hugs for Charlie~ |
Try chicken baby food Linda....mine will eat/lick that off my finger when they wont eat anything else....his little mouth wont have to work so hard to chew up baby food and his system will be able to digest it easier..... |

I too think it's awesome for them to have visitors and I think it helps with their healing process. Charlie is added to the prayer list in this house. Looking forward to reading some happy updates on him. ((HUGS)) hang in there! |
Thank goodness for YORKIE HAVEN to the rescue! Prayers for Charlie! Ladyjane thank you for keeping us up to date on his saga. Can imagine who would do that to a pup -- looks like at one point he was dragged. |
4 Attachment(s) Thank you to all of you for your kind words.... I went to see Charlie today. I am copying below what I posted about him on Facebook ... Charlie is hanging in. While he is improving, he is not nearly well enough to be out of the ICU. He is getting 50% of needed nutrition through his NG tube and they are encouraging him to eat. He ate about 1/3 of what was offered this morning. On our visit, he took a few bites of vanilla flavored yogurt, but he was not overly excited about much of anything. It could be a number of things that are affecting his mentation (he is a bit dull). It could be a result of the Fentanyl which was discontinued this morning and he is now on Tramadol or could be he has some other underlying issue we are not aware of....he also had a very low blood sugar for some time in the shelter. Time will tell ... maybe by tomorrow after being off of the Fentanyl for 24 hours he will be a bit brighter. His wounds are healing and the drain in the surgical site is showing less drainage now. He can walk around, but slowly and he stumbles a lot...again we just don't know why. Time will tell us more. We took a couple of toys to him and when we squeaked one of them, he did walk over to it. He also reacted to his vet specialist's voice. A couple of times when she walked into the room he perked up and turned towards her when he heard her voice! Some photos of my visit: Attachment 408968 Attachment 408969 Attachment 408970 Attachment 408971 |
Thinking about the "human" that did this to that precious little soul, stirs up a hatred in my soul that my God is not happy with.....one of those things I need to work on, I guess.....he looks like he is slowly improving, and I am prayerful that once the Fentynl is dc'd, he will shake those cobwebs loose in a day or so.....so doctor gave me that drug a long time ago for severe ear infection and lancing my eardrum, inserting a wick to drain my inner ear.....it almost KILLED me!! The dose he prescribed knocked me flat on my back for 3 days....momma thought the doctor had killed me!! So hopefully if the Fentanyl is stopped, after a day or so, he will get sharper! |
Charlie Thank you for the update on the poor baby. It must break your heart to see him looking so sad and sick, as it does ours. At least he can stand up and is getting some nutrition. I know you are more familiar with seeing such ill treated dogs in your rescue, but it is so hard to imagine how any human can do this to a poor innocent animal. Thank goodness you found him and are caring for him. Praying so hard that the brave little soul gets over all this and is able to experience the love and care he deserves for the rest of his life. Thinking of you little Charlie, and get well soon. |
If this is from a dog attack, it could be that he has a pinched nerve causing the stumbling. If it were a large dog then he was probably shaken severely & when little dogs live through that, they often have neck/shoulder issues from the shaking. He may not be responding well from depression from missing his people. God, this just makes my heart hurt. He just needs a billion hugs & kisses to give him the will to keep on going. What about some stinky ol broccoli mixed with some chicken baby food. All of mine will do anything for broccoli. Steam it & stick it in a zip lock bag to seal in that stinky smell so when you get to the vets office you can open the bag rite in front of him & then mix it with the baby food & just maybe he'll eat it. |
Oh this precious little one! Such an angel to fight so hard like this. Sending him ALL our love, kisses, and hopes! I have a suggestion for something to try for food - it can really work for super bad appetite issues for some kiddos. Go to the toddler food section in the grocery store, and buy those little mini-hot dogs that come in a glass jar - try those. I know they're not ideal, per se, but seriously...if they can help stimulate his appetite, who cares ya know? They're quite mild bc they're for kids, but are *very* tasty to doggies. |
Bless this little guy's heart. What horror he must have experienced. I pray that he continues to improve. |
Been following little Charlie on YHR. Sending lots of prayers and love for the little man! What a sweet baby boy. |
Glad he seems to be making improvements. I've been following this on FB. Poor little guy. He's been through so much. |
