Hge Hi there! Newbee here, still not quite sure how to maneuver my way around! I'm Bella & Chase's Mommy.....Bella is 1yr 2mos, Chase is 11mos old =) Thank you very much Vicky, Her first sign of sickness was at about 8:30 a.m NY Day....she must have vomitted 8 times within 45 min...the last two with a pink tint.... I panicked! Was at the emergency vet by 11:45 This is when she had her first bloody stool, I just about died I was at the vet on emergency New Year's Eve with my boy Chase.... No bloody stools or vomit, he was sent home with antibiotics and given a under the skin shot for fluids. I feel lucky to have caught it early....I could not keep her over night for the 48 hrs suggested, they gave her under skin fluids, antibiotics among many other meds (5 in total) and I brought her home, thus far no vomitting, she's keeping down food and her stools not normal yet but not bloody. I have been giving small doses of pedialyte after the blood clot articles I have read. Has anyone had a dog with this that fully recovered without IV treatments? I am still so super worried Thk you, Chase & Bellas Mommy :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

Hi there Sharon! She had an X-ray and and was monitored for several hours at the vet, while I was waiting in the waiting room I started googling her symptoms and she experienced everything identical to symptoms of HGE EVERYTHING... The fast onset with absolutely no warning, order and consistency of everything. When I asked the Dr if this could be HGE he said there's a strong possibility? We got sent home with multiple meds |

This is very serious. We lost our darling Gina to this disease. Five days in the hospital with IV, blood transfusions and abx she died. It cost $5000. Please stay on top of this situation. I wish you the best. There are several posters that have gone through this with their pups are everything turned out well. |

My girl the following day NYD ...So far, so good she is keeping her fluids in |

Thankfully or I would have really freaked out! I am so very sorry for your loss....so sorry, these little ones are so much like our children.....Giving her all her meds, she is keeping all fluids in, on a bland diet but still not her normal self... She does not want to drink water so I have been tube feeding her water and pedialyte approx every hour, I must get back to work tomorrow so I took her to the vet this a.m to get her under the skin fluids Really monitoring her but still a worried mommy |
It sounds to me like your pup needs to be hospitalized. There is NO way you can give your pup enough water...or pedialyte...or any liquid to prevent/cure dehydration. Subcutaneous fluids can help, but are not always successful. My suggestion to you is to find a way to do as the vet suggested and leave her there for appropriate treatment! If this is a money issue, perhaps you can apply for Healthcare Financing Credit Card | CareCredit Having one sick pup is expensive enough...but two? After this, I strongly suggest you look into pet insurance. Yorkies can and do become very ill quickly when having GI issues and can die if not treated promptly and correctly! Hope things are improving. If not, I would definitely not leave her alone while going to work. |

This is not an attack on you, I am stricken with grief and guilt that I cannot at this time provide my Bella with the care she needs.....it would not be a thought in my head to go against dr's orders.... Everyone has a different story Thank you for telling me what I already know |

I am also sick over it...I see a pup suffering and I find that to be so unfair. Sure, everyone has a different story, but I don't see how that makes it fair to her. If she continues to be sick and you cannot find a way to save her, please consider turning her over to someone who can save her. I don't say that will any malice....it just isn't fair to allow a pup to suffer and die. If she is better that's great. I am not looking at photos...there is more to taking care of them than making them look pretty. Sorry if that offends you...but vet care especially when they are sick is a priority. Coming here and telling us might make you feel better...I guess??? But...I have given you solutions and do hope you will think long and hard. My hope is that she is better...AND that you will then think about health insurance for your babies. |
I've been through this with my Allie. She spent 3 day's at the Vet on IV Fluids and med's and med's to take after coming home for a week. I do watch her really close now. We have no idea what caused it, sometimes you never the cause. The key to this is getting constant IV Fluids. |
How is Bella doing now? I am hopeful that things are better. |
Thank you much for checking in, I would say she is 75-80% thus far... Her X-ray clear, blood work good, no kidney or liver damage, no parasites or bacterial infections, white blood cell count good. Keeping all fluids, food and medication down. Spurts of extreme energy, back to running, playing, barking and giving demands! My only concern is she wants nothing to do with water just her bland diet so I am mixing it in with her food and tube feeding her, I informed our vet and he said this is not alarming since there is no vomitting/diarrhea. Our vet hates me, I won't leave him alone! I am still giving her fluids and watching her every move! Thank you for asking! |
When you say tube feeding...I hope you don't mean putting a tube to her stomach...??? If so, I imagine you know how to do it properly?? She probably is not needing more fluids if you have it in her food. Sometimes we think they need to drink more than they do. I am happy to hear that she sounds like she in on the mend! |
Just wanted to thank everyone who provided input and participated on responding to our thread. Bella & Chase are my children much like your fur babies are yours😊🐶 She is on the mend and pretty darn close to 100% and back to her healthy, happy and playful soul/self🐶😊❤️ |
So...the question about tube feeding is null. So happy your pup survived. Here is a link you may find helpful. 10 Best Pet Insurance of 2016 | Trusted by 3,947,000 | Consumers Advocate |
Null...precisely the correct terminology =) Both my pets were insured the next day! Thank you! |

Gee, that's really quick on your part. Good for you...next time you will be better prepared for the high bills we yorkie owners are often faced with. |
Tube feeding or syringe feeding? I can see how the two can be easily mixed up to the layperson. After my own stint in the hospital, believe me, tube feeding is not the same as syringe feeding! LOL I did however get barium force fed to me via syringe through my tube, which was much better than actually drinking it, but I digress. Glad to read that your pups are doing better. Who is this Vicky you mention in your OP? Is that someone who fed your pups something wrong and they got sick? Also wanted to mention that most pet insurance is unlike people health insurance. You must first pay out of pocket, then you get reimbursed. So if you lack the funds, insurance will not help you. I suggest you look into Care Credit that Ladyjane linked. It's a credit card with a high interest rate, but only if you don't pay off the balance before the promotional period, which if you do, the interest is ZERO. I have used it many times. When I fell on hard times, all my credit cards canceled me, but CC did not, probably thinking if I really needed it they would have had me by the balls LOL. |

Good point about insurance. Good to have both....you definitely need money up front when dealing with these things. These yorkies can get the craziest things....so many of us here know all about that. |

I would never take things upon myself with my pups or put them in danger in anyway as I am quite sure most pet owners (or) "YORKIE owners such as myself" would absolutely agree :) You quite ASSUMED I was feeding through my Bella's stomach without me ever stating so :) Gee, maybe it was quite quick on my behalf since I did not wait around 2 or 3 days before I got her to the vet.... She was at the vet within two hours of her first sign of illness. At her worst, we were already sitting in the Dr's office waiting on her X-Ray results. The Dr said getting her in so quickly would definitely be crucial to her recovery. I turned to this sight upon my return because I was still so very worried about her, for the most part I came across other fur mommies sharing their stories from their experience and concerns HOWEVER I came across even more fur mommies via private message almost APOLOGISING for other members behavior LOL Ultimately, she received the care she needed $2500 in, So I am quite aware of the bills "WE YORKIE OWNERS" can be subject to:) Thank you for the well wishes once again as stated before!!! |

Soooo, it wasn't a tube then, it was a syringe, right? I'm still confused. You haven't clarified which you used. |

You need to stop this. You clearly know that you did the opposite of what was recommended by the vet so my guess is you are feeling a bit defensive. No one is attacking you...we are trying to clarify things...that is ALL. Feeding tubes go either from the nose to the stomach....OR directly to the stomach. |
Quote:
I cannot believe your vet charged you $2,500 for such little care! I would not be back there. I can go to one of the best hospitals in the country right here in Houston and have a pup admitted to ICU for that price! sheesh |
Quote:
You can go on and on and I will most definitely let you!!! This behavior seems to be the norm with you on here or so I have read on one thread after the other after the other after the other! Lol The energy is one i just don't deal with.... This thread is all you now, so have at! Thank you! You have yourself a wonderful eve:) |

Thank you! |
So it was a syringe then? Why do you keep avoiding the question? You don't want us to assume, yet you do not answer. |
Quote:
I am assuming there was probably no syringe or NG (or any other type) tube. That's me....a person who assumes. ;) |
One other thing about insurance besides paying upfront - most will not cover pre existing illness i.e. HGE. I have used my insurance every year I have had it. With three bouts of pancreatatis and a bee sting it has paid for itself. Glad your babes are getting better. |
