Wyland's numbers Hi all, Really appreciate all the support/advice and sharing experiences. We have only done three IV's thus far and while it is becoming a little easier, Wyland is not a happy camper. We did heat the fluid bag in water. Neither our vet or the specialist suggested the flush. Here are his numbers: Urine/Protein Creatinine Ratio: 5.3 BUN: 151 Creatinine: 3.2 BUN/Creatinine Ration: 47 Phosphorus: 7.2 They want him on Aluminum Hydroxide, Blood pressure and kidney med, and two other liquid compounded meds. He also has pancreatitis and inflamed bowel. The specialist's attitude is to treat the patient and not the numbers which is the philosophy we like. To provide quality of life. However, we don't know how much quality ALL this is giving Wyland because he doesn't go along well with any of it. He has NEVER been treat motivated so it makes it even more difficult. We are calm and positive about providing his necessary care and do try to make it all a "happy event", but the stinker is much smarter than all that! We understand his numbers are very high and wonder just how much all these meds are really going to help. Not concerned from a cost stand point, but all the anxiety it is doing to Wyland. Again, any support, suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks all for being there! Barb |
Barb, I can only suggest that a lot of the discomfort and lack of appetite is coming from the pancreatitis. Diana |

Anyway.....I feel for you with Wyland acting as he is. What bothers him the most? If it is the needles, I really don't know a way to make that great...but I can say that if you are anxious during that time, he will know it. My pups all seem to pick up on my vibes. With his multiple issues, I suggest that you consider a consult with a vet nutritionist. I had a pup, Cody, years ago who had pancreatitis and renal failure and found that it was difficult, almost impossible, to find a food that was good for both. If we gave him renal diet, it aggravated the pancreas and if we gave the food for pancreatitis, it was not good for the kidneys. I ended up doing a consult and home cooking...he was in hog heaven! :D And, it helped him immensely to feel better. I would go with the meds suggested even if he dislikes it...it isn't that long of a period in the day and if it makes him feel better it will be worth it. My Olivia has renal issues and is on meds....I hide them in a meatball of her food because she is a witch about taking meds...LOL...she is my baby girl so I really don't view her as a witch. Of course, you really should read about each medication and it's benefits vs side effects. |
