My poor boy broke 2 bones My poor baby Max broke 2 metacarpal bones tonight in his front right paw. He was chasing his sister around the house, like they always do, and he mistimed a jump. There is about a 6" step going from the family room to the kitchen and we have a gate there. The gate was open but it has a rail along the bottom that is about 1" off the ground because of the shoe molding. He zoomed past us in hot pursuit of Sasha, which he has done a thousand times before, but this time when he made the jump he started yelping bloody murder. We think his little paw went under the rail and broke the 2 bones. We took him to the emergency vet, where the x-ray showed the breaks. The vet said they were clean breaks, which is good. They put a huge splint that covers his whole leg on him. He is high as a kite right now but when he sobers up he is not going to like that. We are going to have to keep him in a crate for up to 12 weeks while he heals. We tried crating him when he was a pup and he HATED it. I have a crate in my office from when Sasha had her surgery so I will take him to work with me for at least the 1st week to see how he reacts to the crate. It breaks my heart to see my baby in pain. |

I am so, so sorry. I'm heartbroken for you. No matter how careful we are with our babies, it's impossible to fully protect them. I know I'm a bit overprotective with Katie and was also with her sisters before her, but I still think it's important to allow them to be dogs --to have fun and to run, play, walk, and jump when playing. Inside, I don't allow any jumping from couches or beds. You and your wife are such wonderful Yorkie parents. I will pray for all of you. I hope Max heals quickly and that your babies lead happy, healthy, active, pain-free lives. |
Oh no, poor guy :( I'm glad you got him in quickly and got him pain meds. Hopefully he is able to handle being contained. 12 weeks is a long time... |
Oh no, poor Max! :( His splint wrap is a cool tiger print, but I understand that he won't like it. 12 weeks of rest is going to be a challenge. Sending him gentle hugs and healing wishes. |
Oh no!! So sad!! Wishing him a speedy recovery. They are so adorable! |
 Oh my goodness, noooo, I'm so sorry :( By the way, love the photo of your little Sasha nuzzling Max - so cute :) |
Oh Bob :(!!! Your poor little man! I bet that really hurt like heck, but with those good meds, he'll be thru the worst of it soon. I hope that he heals quickly and easily, with no future repercussions at all. Accidents just happen unfortunately, to all of us, with these little ones. He will be in thoughts!! {how wrong is it that I think he is SO CUTE in that dang cast of his???} |
OMG, the poor little boy, crate rest for 12 weeks wow, poor sweet little thing, it breaks my heart knowing they are in pain. Keeping little boy in my prayers for quick, painless healing. Sasha is so sweet, she knows brother is in pain, so much love there, they are amazing lil pups. (((hugs))) to Max from Cody and me. |
Oh , poor baby . I hope he is feeling better soon .. |
Poor little Max !!! Hope he does well with having to be in a crate for sooooo long. There's just no way too keep them totally safe (other than putting them in a glass bubble) LOL. Wishing Max a quick recovery ! |
So sorry to hear of Max's accident. Praying he heals quickly and he is without pain. Sasha greeting him is so sweet! |
Poor baby! I hope he adjusts to the crate without too much fuss. 12 wks is so long. Having broken a metatarsal in my foot I know that it feels so much better after the cast is on the the area is stablelized. |
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I have Max and Sasha with me at work today. He does not like the crate but I have to give him some tough love right now so that he can heal. Max being in the crate has Sasha very confused. Does anyone know of any dietary supplements that promote healing of bones for dogs? |
