Addison's Disease?? Our girl, Roxy became sick.. Took her to Vet and he said she was full of poop and gave her medication. She was not eating, vomiting, just was not active at all.. so we thought this was it... well, the week went on and she did poop but vomiting not eating or drinking. By Friday, I was up all night with her, She looked dehydrated and could not walk. I called the Vet and got a great female Vet.. Rushed her to the hospital.. Hooked her up on IV stayed overnight... My baby was very sick... We cryed and prayed for her recovery and she called and said she has Addison's disease... Never heard of it.. So they were treating her but they were very guarded.. Hubby stopped coming home from work and they brought her to him and she was happy and tail wagging they said she was better.. Spent the night and we got a call to pick her up.. She came home with medication that she has to take everyday for the rest of her life and a shot once a month. But they say she will have a normal life... She is slow to eat but is coming around... I am so thankful.. Has anyone here ever heard of this disease and how is it going... |
1 Attachment(s) Attachment 406574Sorry to hear about your puppy. I searched the forum and found a bunch of threads - here are just two threads - hope this helps... Addison's Disease (07-27-2009) |
I have a co worker with a pup with Addison's - for a couple of years now. I think that she does fine, there are just medications to administer - prayers for your pup. |
roxy update I think roxy is on the road to recovery. It is slow going.. she has started to eat and drink now. I just want to know if those with this disease started out slow and then went about their normal lives in a week or 2.. I am just on edge still. I am giving her medication and doing what I am told to do.. Thank you for all your well wishes and your wonderful advice.. Janet & Roxy |
Our fox terrier Maggie was diagnosed when she was 5 years old with Addison's...same symptoms as Roxy. We were very careful about getting her to the vet for her shot monthly...if she went over at all she would regress so its something you need to be on top of. Her shot was called percortin. After 5 years her vet taught us how to give her the shot and ordered a bottle for us so we could save $ because it became costly. He was great about it and it helped alot. Maggie passed away last summer at the age of 13. She lived 8 years with Addison's and my vet said she was his most successful case. He shared that many people aren't good about consistently getting the shot and then the dogs crash and recovery is so hard on them. Maggie lived a very good managed life with the disease. Occasionally she became symptomatic but overall had a great quality of life. She died in her sleep I believe from just natural causes. She was sweet and loving and we miss her very much. ...I hope you have a long happy life with roxy!! |
Luckily, this disease is very easy to treat w/ meds, so that's the upside. Keep in mind that she has been feeling like utter crap/death while she was untreated, so I would not be surprised at all that it will take awhile for her to bounce back. Operating w/ little to almost no steroid hormone in the system is just exhausting...and very sick feeling. Btw, my Wylie has the opposite of this exact disease (too high steroid in the system)...called Cushings Disease. |
