Anal Gland Carcinoma - maybe Hi everyone - So I just got back from a follow up visit at the Vet with Hugo and I'll know tomorrow or Friday if he has anal carcinoma. I first noticed a hard marble-like in size bump by his anal area when giving him a bath. Took him in immediately and they thought it could be his anal glands, gave me some meds and today was the follow up. It's still there, maybe a little smaller. They squeezed it and under the microscope it didn't look like it should. So it's getting tested and will know by Friday. Anyone experience this before? He's 11 years old, neutered, doesn't scoot or chase his tail, etc. I've been a wreck since leaving the vet. Thanks! Pegah |
I'm very you and Hugo are going through this. I don't have any experience with carcinoma, but my little angel, Ashley, has an anal gland tumor when she was thirteen. It was a painful surgery for her because of the sensitive area and all of the nerve endings, but she did well afterwards. Ashley lived for four more years. The tumor came back, but it was small and Ashley didn't need surgery again. I hope you get good news when you get the pathology report back. |
Thank you for your reply. Hopefully it's not cancer and the vet mentioned possible surgery to remove it. I'm happy to hear that when Ashley's tumor came back she at least didn't need the surgery again. She could out her life without the aftermath of surgery. I wish I could stop crying at least until I hear back from the vet. Hugo's so happy and healthy. I hate this. |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Sending best wishes for your boy for this to be a benign mass. |
Because of the area, I would recommend having a soft tissue surgeon take a look at it. They can end up with a lot of issues including incontinence after surgery for these things. Hopefully this will be benign. Prayers for your boy. |
Maximo and Ladyjane - Thank you both. Everyone's prayers mean so much. I hope to be posting in the next day or two with good news. Ladyjane - I take Hugo to VCA West Los Angeles and they have the best veterinarians there. Thank you for the advise. I will be sure to talk to his vet about the specialist if/when time comes. :) |

Sending lots of positive thoughts to you for your baby. I know how scary it can be waiting for these types of results! Keeping you guys in my thoughts and hoping for good news! |
Nothing new to report. Pathology results didn't come today which means probably tomorrow. The anxiety is the worst. Hugo is being his happy self! Eating well, playing, etc. like always. Thank you for all the kind words and prayers. Hoping to post good news tomorrow! |

Prayers continue.... |
Thanks Ladyjane! |
We are praying for good results. |
Update: Got the call from Hugo's vet. It's cancer. I've already dropped him off to get an ultrasound and blood work. Should know if it's spread later today. Blood test results probably tomorrow. Hopefully it hadn't spread and he can surgery immediately to remove. I'm an emotional wreck as you all probably can imagine. Praying we caught it early. I'll update if I hear anything. Thank you all for your kinds words and prayers. Please continue to pray he'll be okay. This is so awful... |
I am very sorry to hear it is cancer. Hugo and you are in my prayers for the cancer to be contained and treatable. He is lucky to have you looking out for him, quickly making sure he gets the care he needs. Sending you positive thoughts of support. |
Thank you. Hoping and praying for the best. He's my precious baby! |
I am so sorry to hear this. I hope it has not spread and can be removed without an issue. Prayers for Hugo and for you. |
Thank you. So Hugo's home. Ultra sound shows that a lymph node seems enlarged but not sure if it's cancer spreading. Waiting to hear back from cytology if it's cancerous meaning it spread. Likely will have surgery next week to remove tumor and will know by latest Monday if they need to go into abdomen area too to remove that lymph node. Tumor is ab 2cm, worry when above .5. |

Thank you. |
I am so sorry about the news about Hugo. I will send many thoughts that it hasn't spread and they can get it all out of him. Definitely not the news I was hoping for you to get, but hopefully caught early enough that he recovers from quickly. |
Sending you and Hugo tons of good thoughts x |
Thank you!! Yea, I think it may have been caught early enough. Chest and abdomen looked clear. Just one lymph node looked slightly enlarged and waiting to hear back from pathologist about it. Blood work looks good. Think he'll definitely have surgery this week for the removal, just waiting to see if the lymph node needs to go too. Hugo is acting as normal as ever. :) The prayers and kind words mean so much. Thank you. |
I'm so glad it was caught early. Hugo is so fortunate to have such a loving mommie. Wishing him best of luck with the surgery and sending prayers for a quick and complete recovery. It is great that he is feeling so well. He is adorable! |
Thank you! :) |
My prayers go out to you and Hugo for the best news possible and a successful surgery. |
Sending out lot's of prayers for Hugo. |
Thank you Everyone! Update: Lymph node cytology came back okay. Testing it again to confirm. Hugo will have surgery on Thursday to remove the anal gland "tumor" and it'll be sent out for biopsy. He'll have to stay at the Vet overnight and should be able to come home Friday considering everything goes well (I pray and anticipate it will). After approximately 2 weeks of recovery he'll probably go through some chemo. I will meet with the Oncologist to go over all options first though. Please continue with the prayers and positive thoughts for Thursday's surgery and a quick successful recovery for baby Hugo! Hugs and thanks for Hugo to each of you! |
