8 weeks can not figure out what is wrong! I got my puppy 6 days ago. He nibbled the first and second day then didn't eat the third or since. I have been trying to syringe feed him milk from the vet and he just throws it up. No diarrhea or blood in stool or vomit. I have BRB giving him nutrical a few times per day. He is getting more and more lethargic. I was at. The vet Saturday when he was fine because I found fleas. He was treated for that and earmites as well as given his first shots. Saturday night was the most active I had seen him. Then Sunday the decline started. On Monday the vet checked his glucose, normal. This was when the throwing up started. Tuesday he wasn't throwing up as much but want eating anything either. He drank quite a bit of water m the vet gave him saline to prevent dehydration anyways. This morming he is completely lethargic. He whimpers when I get near him. The vet is keeping him for observation and seeing if he tube feeds him if he will keep it down. He does have some bacteria in his stool that was found yesterday so we have begun antibiotics. No worms though. He hasn't had any fevers. It sounds like the next assumption would be liver shunt but he doesnt seem to have many if any of the characteristics. Isn't 8 weeks too young to test his bile acid? Does anyone have any ideas? I just want to do right by this little guy!! |
Contact the breeder you bought your puppy from and tell them what is going on. Next, you MUST get this baby to eat and I would suggest baby food...chicken is bland and easily digestable. Before I made the jump to liver shunt in a 8 week old baby, first consider all that this little soul has had happen to him....ear mite meds, flea meds, vaccinations....that is a whole lot of assault on such an immature system...you never give vaccinations to a dog that is ill....if fleas/ear mites have him under the weather, and he was given treatment for that, then loaded up with vaccinations on top of all that......I think that was an awful lot to put on a baby. Any or all of that could cause vomiting in a youngster.... I feel terrible for your baby.....I hope it all works out for this innocent little soul....sounds like he has had a rough start in his life. Please keep us posted. |
Thank you for the reply! I hope he does okay with the tube feeding and we can kick start his appetite again. I too feel that he has had a terribly rough start at life. I have tried contacting the breeder and her phone is shut off...legit , right! I mean for days it has just gone straight to voicemail. They used Revolution to treat the fleas and the earmites and I noticed that the lowest dose is "up to 10lbs". He weighs 1.6 I'm starring to question if he's experiencing some poinsing. Thoughts?! |
They have Revolution that is used for puppies, that is a much lower dose....the vet hopefully used that strength, or at least divided the dosage they had, for such a young puppy. I would NOT give any more vaccinations until this pup is 100%.....or until you have some kind of an idea of a diagnosis. Pay the breeder a visit....go to her house where she sold you the puppy.....did you get any kind of registration papers on this baby? I am not sure you can even be sure how old this baby actually is. |
I did not go to her house, I know, rookie mistake. I didn't think anything of it being as though I would not want a stranger coming to my house. hindsight is 2020. I just spoke with the vet he said the puppies glucose was so low it was a wonder he was able to hold his head up. I had given him nutri-cal a few times this morning prior to going in and it was still that low. he was able to get a little bit of blood that he says has some indicators that the puppy could have a liver shunt. he says its not diagnostic due to the poor nutrition state he's in right now. if he in fact has a liver shunt the revolution for the fleas and ear mites would have triggered a bad reaction. he's going to begin the tube feeding and we will see if he is able to keep it down. If that is successful he's going to try a low dose steroid to counteract any damage from the revolution. I'm glad we finally have a little bit of direction. its been a stressful week for all of us.I have wanted a Yorkie of some kind for quite a while. if he doesn't end up making it I may be too scared to try again because of how delicate their little bodies are.wish us luck! |
Hi, so sorry about your little one. I would ask for a bile acid test. Our yorkie was having the same symptoms, she had a liver shunt. |
Well our little guy passed away. I'm devastated but I'm confident we did everything we could have. I think he came from a negligent start and I just didn't get him soon enough to be able to save him. Thank you all for your thoughts! |
I'm just sick that this little soul had to suffer so. I know you tried to do the best for him but he was too young to be removed from his mom. I hope you get some satisfaction from his breeder. |
So sorry for your loss |
This is heartbreaking, poor little baby. I'm sorry for your loss. :( |
I know your heart is broken. I am so very sorry for your loss. |

As far as bile acid tests that this stage of the game, this baby is WAY to sick to be challenged with fasting blood work or tests.....hopefully your vet is NOT going to challenge this baby any more than is absolutely necessary JUST to get the baby to survive. If the pup survives, and gets healthy, THEN you can start testing for a diagnosis. Good luck with your struggle and I pray this unfortunate baby survives. |
So sorry you lost you baby. You did everything you could and you were a very good Yorkie parent! Please don't give up on Yorkies, but do find a great breeder so you experience is all you would hope it to be. That is very possible. Yorkie Talk is a great place to learn about Yorkies and get good advice on breeders and acquiring your next Yorkie. Thanks you for taking such good care and loving this pup and giving such good care. |
I am so very sorry for the loss of your little baby. I know how heart brokenyou must be, v ery, very tragic. Follow the advise the above member have given. It is not the breed, but the neglectful breeder. Yorkies are an awesome breed. I am on # 5, my last girl lived to be 17 y/o. Please do not give up on the breed, don't deny yourself a yorkie, you will miss out on so much. Follow members advise, seek a repeatable breeder. You were sold a sick puppy, not the breeds fault. You did all you could do. (((HUGS))) |
I am probably in the anger phase of grief...I got my little guy that passed away via craigslist and have been unable to contact the breeder due to the phone going straight to VM since the day after I got him. I decided I was going to check craigslist periodically to see if my vets suspicions of him being from a puppy mill are correct and low and behold today, one week after I got him, she made another listing selling 3 more puppies. It is a different phone number than I used to contact her. I have called the police, the local shelter, the humane society, and animal control. All have not returned a call yet. Is there anyone else you can think of to contact? Also, in your experience are they likely to do anything when they only have a craigslist ad and phone number to go off of?! |
You might contact craigslist and see if they will pull the ad. You could sue in small claims. Stay angry for the pain your baby went through. |
Im so sorry for your loss, the poor little thing, sending prayers |
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Craigslist doesn't track those who post. I have been flagging someone who has been listing the same puppy since Dec. Its a scam, the puppy doesn't even exist but the poster is able to keep placing the ad. After weeks of flagging it, the poster changed photos but continues to post. I hate to say it, but it is unlikely that you will be able to have any recourse for your experience. |
Sorry for your loss. But take this and use it. After you resolve your issue with the breeder...just learn never buy form a breeder who is willing to sell at 8weeks and never buy from a breeder if you can't see their living conditions and the Dam. Just more research before buying. You want to spend your hard earn money by supporting good breeders and receiving a healthy puppy. Not these Craiglist ppl |
Sorry for your loss 😔 |
I think it is good to at least try to have her pulled from Craig's List. What a horrible person to neglect these poor creatures and then sell them to people who have to watch them suffer. At least you did right by the little guy once you had him. I'm sorry that you had to go through this. |
So sorry for that poor puppy, sounds like he never had a chance. Does TX have puppy lemon laws and laws against selling dogs under 8 weeks old, many states do. If this was me, I would have someone call this so called breeder from a different number and pretend they want to buy a puppy, get her to meet up in a place busy like in front of pet smart or petco. I would then go there with a bunch of people (several men) perhaps people from groups against puppy mills. Bring your vet bills. Depending on the TX laws you could perhaps get a policeman or animal control officer to meet you there. Have people take pictures of her, have someone watch her car when she drives up and get her lic. plate number, you can use that to get her contact info to take her to small claims court and find out what type of place she is running. Did she give you a contract, if so she could be liable for what was on that, especially if she made stuff up. Use your anger to stop her and to try to recoup some of your money. BTW how much did you pay for the dog?? |
I thought I would update. I arranged for my little sister to meet the breeder. I hid and took pictures of her and her vehicle. I did a license plate look up and found out her name and address. I looked at the address via Google Earth and she has 4 sheds on the property. Not a good sign. I had to see for myself so I went there on Monday. She lives out in the country, I could hear the puppies barking from a metal shed in the back corner of the property. I contacted the supervisor with animal control for that county. I emailed her all of the information I have and they are supposed to be going out today to take a look. |

so glad you did something, did you find out if there are puppy lemon laws, also did she give you a contract, and how much did the puppy cost? I can't imagine how hot it must be in TX to keep dogs in metal sheds. |
There are no puppy lemon laws. I paid $350. Unpapered around here the males go on average $300-600. I did not get a contract! I know I did everything about as wrong as I could have. First time, HUGE learning experience. I wish I had found this website prior but at the same time I hope I gave my little guy the love and treatment he needed during his las week. Texas as a whole seems to have very lax breeder laws. Thankfully the county she lives in is pretty strict on domesticated animal laws! |
check this thread out, who knows her pup could be from the same person you bought your pup from, if you find a few other people that bought sick pups from the person you did, this might help get her shut down and some of your money back. There are strength in numbers http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...3463-help.html |
Kudos to you for going after this horrible person. I hope you make a difference for these poor dogs kept in sheds. |
