8 weeks can not figure out what is wrong!
 

I got my puppy 6 days ago. He nibbled the first and second day then didn't eat the third or since. I have been trying to syringe feed him milk from the vet and he just throws it up. No diarrhea or blood in stool or vomit. I have BRB giving him nutrical a few times per day. He is getting more and more lethargic. I was at. The vet Saturday when he was fine because I found fleas. He was treated for that and earmites as well as given his first shots. Saturday night was the most active I had seen him. Then Sunday the decline started. On Monday the vet checked his glucose, normal. This was when the throwing up started. Tuesday he wasn't throwing up as much but want eating anything either. He drank quite a bit of water m the vet gave him saline to prevent dehydration anyways. This morming he is completely lethargic. He whimpers when I get near him. The vet is keeping him for observation and seeing if he tube feeds him if he will keep it down. He does have some bacteria in his stool that was found yesterday so we have begun antibiotics. No worms though. He hasn't had any fevers. It sounds like the next assumption would be liver shunt but he doesnt seem to have many if any of the characteristics. Isn't 8 weeks too young to test his bile acid?

Does anyone have any ideas? I just want to do right by this little guy!!

Contact the breeder you bought your puppy from and tell them what is going on. Next, you MUST get this baby to eat and I would suggest baby food...chicken is bland and easily digestable. Before I made the jump to liver shunt in a 8 week old baby, first consider all that this little soul has had happen to him....ear mite meds, flea meds, vaccinations....that is a whole lot of assault on such an immature system...you never give vaccinations to a dog that is ill....if fleas/ear mites have him under the weather, and he was given treatment for that, then loaded up with vaccinations on top of all that......I think that was an awful lot to put on a baby. Any or all of that could cause vomiting in a youngster....

I feel terrible for your baby.....I hope it all works out for this innocent little soul....sounds like he has had a rough start in his life. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for the reply! I hope he does okay with the tube feeding and we can kick start his appetite again. I too feel that he has had a terribly rough start at life. I have tried contacting the breeder and her phone is shut off...legit , right! I mean for days it has just gone straight to voicemail. They used Revolution to treat the fleas and the earmites and I noticed that the lowest dose is "up to 10lbs". He weighs 1.6 I'm starring to question if he's experiencing some poinsing. Thoughts?!

They have Revolution that is used for puppies, that is a much lower dose....the vet hopefully used that strength, or at least divided the dosage they had, for such a young puppy. I would NOT give any more vaccinations until this pup is 100%.....or until you have some kind of an idea of a diagnosis.

Pay the breeder a visit....go to her house where she sold you the puppy.....did you get any kind of registration papers on this baby? I am not sure you can even be sure how old this baby actually is.

I did not go to her house, I know, rookie mistake. I didn't think anything of it being as though I would not want a stranger coming to my house. hindsight is 2020. I just spoke with the vet he said the puppies glucose was so low it was a wonder he was able to hold his head up. I had given him nutri-cal a few times this morning prior to going in and it was still that low. he was able to get a little bit of blood that he says has some indicators that the puppy could have a liver shunt. he says its not diagnostic due to the poor nutrition state he's in right now. if he in fact has a liver shunt the revolution for the fleas and ear mites would have triggered a bad reaction. he's going to begin the tube feeding and we will see if he is able to keep it down. If that is successful he's going to try a low dose steroid to counteract any damage from the revolution. I'm glad we finally have a little bit of direction. its been a stressful week for all of us.I have wanted a Yorkie of some kind for quite a while. if he doesn't end up making it I may be too scared to try again because of how delicate their little bodies are.wish us luck!

Hi, so sorry about your little one. I would ask for a bile acid test. Our yorkie was having the same symptoms, she had a liver shunt.

Well our little guy passed away. I'm devastated but I'm confident we did everything we could have. I think he came from a negligent start and I just didn't get him soon enough to be able to save him. Thank you all for your thoughts!

I'm just sick that this little soul had to suffer so. I know you tried to do the best for him but he was too young to be removed from his mom. I hope you get some satisfaction from his breeder.

If your baby does not make it through this, you need to just stop and grieve and save your money so you can get a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder........".......how delicate their little bodies are", does not reflect Yorkies...it reflects what happens and what you get when you buy from unreliable, unethical, unreputable breeders... If you get your baby from a reputable breeder, and the baby is healthy, what you are going thru with this baby is NOT the normal thing for Yorkies!! You got a sick pup from an unethical mill and the only good thing that will come from this, is you will see how important it is that you deal with ethical, reputable people. I am so sorry this is your first experience with a yorkie puppy. This is not what you can expect from the Yorkie breed, this is what you can expect from crooks that breed and sell sick puppies. Next time, find you a breeder you can trust, learn what the breed standard is for these dogs, make sure your breeder has a signed contract with you outlining exactly what she is responsible for and what YOU are responsible for, a breeder that has a health guarantee, a breeder that comes with references and shows an interest in the breed, and be prepared to PAY for the expertise and labopr of love and attention your breeder has invested in your puppy. Reputable, ethical trusted breeders spend a ton of money on their pups and they do not sell them at flea markets, shopping malls, parking lots, garage sales, or from their car.....and they HAVE to charge a reasonable price for everything they have put into the puppy to even break even. That old saying, "You get what you pay for" usually holds true, especially when buying a puppy.

As far as bile acid tests that this stage of the game, this baby is WAY to sick to be challenged with fasting blood work or tests.....hopefully your vet is NOT going to challenge this baby any more than is absolutely necessary JUST to get the baby to survive. If the pup survives, and gets healthy, THEN you can start testing for a diagnosis. Good luck with your struggle and I pray this unfortunate baby survives.

Please don't give up on Yorkies, but do find a great breeder so you experience is all you would hope it to be. That is very possible.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your little baby. I know how heart brokenyou must be, v ery, very tragic. Follow the advise the above member have given. It is not the breed, but the neglectful breeder. Yorkies are an awesome breed. I am on # 5, my last girl lived to be 17 y/o. Please do not give up on the breed, don't deny yourself a yorkie, you will miss out on so much. Follow members advise, seek a repeatable breeder. You were sold a sick puppy, not the breeds fault. You did all you could do. (((HUGS)))
