Alread.y called vet, waiting for call back. Help Hi, I woke up really early this morning and Sunni came over to snuggle up. I noticed she was trembling like crazy. I thought she was cold because I left the window open last night, and it was chilly. I warmed her up but the trembling continued. Brought the the dogs down to go outside. She peed, came in for her treat…still trembling. Drank a normal amount of water..still trembling. I gave some Karo syrup, not knowing what else to do. No vomiting or diarrhea. Seems like the trembling is lessening, but she's still doing it. She resounds to her name. I checked her whole body..she's not acting like there is pain anywhere. I just checked her now and she's not trembling, so maybe I answered my own question. |
How old is she again? It def could be the chills and/or hypoglycemia. I hope she is okay! Keep us posted... |
She's 5 months old. The shivering has stopped, she's laying in her bed. Every now and then she will come out and go to another bed. I have 3 different ones downstairs. She does seem kind of sweaty, if that makes sense. I read to look at her pupils, but her eyes are so dark I can't really tell what size they are supposed to be. I will let you know what the vet says. Thanks for the response. She was so awesome in the puppy class last night. Lots of fun, and she learns everything so fast, she's the star of her group…I'm wondering if she's reacting to the Sentinel which I gave her the night before last? Ugh…I get so stressed when my babies get sick. I can't even tell you the knot of fear in my stomach. Trying very had not to act scared around her, but even Harry is being extra nice to her. He went and laid down beside her, which is the first time he's ever done that with her:(. |
You did the right thing, call vet, get her in. If she was cold from open window she would have snuggled in against you to keep warm, but then again I am assuming she sleeps in your bed with you. The Karo syrup was good, it cannot cause any harm. Don't forget to ask the vet about reactions of the Sentinel. I know you will keep us posted. Praying for lil Miss Sunni, she has gone through so much already. |
You did the right thing. . . Have her checked out. . . It doesn't hurt. How much does she weigh ? |
Our last girl would get this way occasionally. Generally, it was caused by something that totally spooked her. In her later years, thunder storms would cause it. It would take a while (multiple hours) for her to get over it. A treat would sometimes help, also we would bring the neighbor's dog over that she was friendly with to snap her out of it. |
When this happened to Bella, it was hypoglycemia, and Karo syrup saved her life. You did the right thing. Hopefully the vet will have an answer for you. |
Thank you all for the responses. Sunni weighs 10lbs as of today, lol (little porker) 5 months old. They did bloodwork and 2 different xrays. The X-rays didn't show any problems. The vet said her legs were ok. She had a slight temp, and is obviously in pain. So, she got a shot for pain..the vet had an emergency c-sec surgery she was in when I got back to get Sunni, so I didn't even find out what's wrong. She is home and did eat and drink a little…she was sleeping when I had to come to the office, but the vets tech assured me that she would be ok for a few hours without me. I'm assuming its not serious or someone would have had to call me by now. I'm pretty sure Sunni has paid someones salary for the last month, lol. My gut feeling is that it has something to do with her taking the heart worm med..seems too coincidental now that I'm not half asleep and can think more clearly. I can't tell you how glad I am that I got pet insurance for her!! Today was another $$$$$ day. |

Sentinel I called Sentinel about possible side effects and they said that the worm meds are out of the system in about six hours and the flea meds in up to 24 hours. So any side effects should be over after 24 hours. My dog seemed to be a bit anxious 48 hours after Sentinel, nothing much, but could have been me being over sensitive to possible side effects. |
The Heart Worm Medicine is Sentinel, I gave her that on Monday..I wasn't thinking really and also did her flea and tick stuff on her back. In NJ its a really huge issue, and the ticks are out in force right now. There's even a new more dangerous virus being spread then Lymes. I am worried now, because the vet did call and wants to do fasting blood test, and then 2 hours later after feeding another blood test. This mornings blood work had slightly elevated white blood count…so she's going to test her liver:( and I'm getting an antibiotic for her on the way home. I really really pray so hard that this poor little puppy doesn't require another serious surgery..poor baby has had 2 already. |

Sorry to hear your baby is a bit under the weather. It could be that giving the two meds at the same time was too much for her. Sounds like you really need the flea and tick meds! Praying the bile acid test does not show a liver issue, and that you get the results quickly so you don't worry. Hope she feels better soon. |
Thank you. I just got home with her antibiotics and gave her the first one. She's definitely improved since this morning, but not her usual perky self. Her big appetite is gone right now. I just hand fed her some roast turkey, so at least she has something in her little tummy. I think we both need an early night tonight. We have become such regulars at the Vet's office I feel like I should get a salary, lol. |
Keeping lil Miss Sunni in my prayers for positive blood work report (((HUGS))) |
Thanks for the update. Good that she is eating, if only a little. I wonder if this is the first Sentinel you have given her? Did she get a fecal test before that? Hope the antibiotic helps her. You both have had a hard day, so hoping you have a peaceful night and sleep well. Sorry that you are such frequent customers at the vet, that is so sad for such a young pup. |
No this isn't the first Sentinel. She's been getting it, but because she was about 9lbs at last visit, I called the vet to check the dosage. And they said she should take 2 this time (the tabs are for up to 5 lb each pill) I think even though she did weigh 10lbs today, it still may have been too much. She has been tested because when I adopted her she had a fierce case of worms on top of everything else..it took 2 treatments to get rid of everything. I hated that experience so much that I do randomly examine her poop..lol..I am officially the crazy dog lady! Anyway, thats one reason I gave it to her, I have the alarm set on my phone for her meds every month (my other dog is on same schedule). Since I've been home she is acting more like herself, just a quiet version. |
Thanks. I thought that if it was the first dose and she had not been tested she might have parasites that could cause symptoms. Sorry she had the infestation before, I agree the sight of the worms is gross! You are not alone in the poop inspection, LOL! Especially amusing to any onlooker is the dark night examination with a flashlight :) If she has been taking the Sentinel before I would not think giving the appropriate double five pound dose for a nearly ten pound dog would hurt. But who knows? If she is ten pounds then a five pound dose might not be enough. Good to hear she is more herself now. Praying tomorrow she will be 100%. Sleep well:) |
dog I have used revolution with no problems. Sounds like sentinel caused this reaction |
I tend to agree with you Sandy. I've always used Revolution but when it was time to start Sunni the Vet had Sentinel. She's much better today. I'm going to wait until Monday so it will be 1 week since I gave the dose to her. Then I'll take her for the fasting blood work. Her little body has just been thru too much to put her through it right now. She's mostly back to her old self this morning, but not quite. I will let you all know how she is. I appreciate all the time everyone has given me. We went to bed at 9 last night and just got up at 6:30!! For me that is a super long night sleep, lol. |
I am happy to hear that Miss Sunni is almost back to acting normally. Hope that whatever is/was the matter with her, that it isn't anything serious. I hope that nothing shows up in her bloodwork. Poor baby has been through so much in her young life. On another note, my Duncan was 6 months old on April 6 and he is also 10 lbs. More puppy to love! |
Thanks for the update. I'm glad she's doing better! |
Happy to hear Sunni is coming around. Poop inspection lol, who ever thought one day I would be mashing poop looking for worms  but that's what I do now, once a week. Thank god no one can see me lol. |

Hi Vicki, The pills I got weren't in a box. They came in an envelope with the Vets information and the dosage from Sentinel. When I got them Sunni was just 5 lbs, so I got 3 months worth assuming she would continue growing….She's growing super fast. So, I read the directions that morning and knew she was right on the cusp of 10 lbs which would have been 2 of the original pills for 5 lb dogs. That was on Monday, by Wed morning she was sick and at the vet. She does weigh 10 lbs now. The vet still doesn't think this had anything to do with the medication. I have questioned them 3 times. The biggest problem I have is that the vet I've used for 25 yrs, is battling cancer and isn't practicing any longer. I tried another Vet ER Hospital here in town, and they are a nightmare disaster. I literally blame the death of my Shih Tzu on them…but thats too raw to even talk about here. Anyway, after what the other (2nd) vets caused to happen to George, I started with this Vet. They are a bit farther from me, but very highly respected. I'm sort of wondering if I should start looking for another one, but I'm not sure that this Vet has done anything wrong…..This is harder then finding the right Pediatrician when my kids were babies, lol. Anyway, I didn't give her an extra dose. She still got it according to her weight. |
Sentinel Sentinel Spectrum pills are different dosing from Sentinel. Which are you giving? |
Sentinel Sentinel 2-10 LB, 11-25 Sentinel Spectrum. 2-8, 8-25 |
I actually don't know now, because those were the last ones and I threw away the packaging. I promise you I read the directions and called the vet, lol. Thats why I made the call before giving to her to begin with..and they told me to give 2 because she was close to 10 lbs at her last visit and I felt like she was bigger, and I was right. Trust me, I would much rather this did NOT happen since its costing me about $600. out of pocket before insurance reimbursement. And Sunni has had a bad enough time since she was born. I would never intentionally overdose her or cause her one second of pain or harm. |
Sentinel Of course you would not overdose her!!! I think you should trust your vet on dosing, so please do not feel bad at all. By the ranges, it does not seem the doses are that critical for this drug. This drug has a good reputation and if there were drug causes for your dog's issues it could be that she was given the Heartworm and flea meds at the same time.......or could be nothing to do with that. I think you said she had the 5 LB dose with no ill effects, so she does not seem sensitive to this drug. Perhaps next time give her the flea and worm meds on different days? Hope she is doing well now. |
The Spectrum is a cylindrical shape and the plain Sentinel is flat. If that helps:) |
