What kind of worm is this? Please help 1 Attachment(s) What in the world is this? He got his deworm Shot 3 weeks ago and his on heartworm medicine. This is crazy. Any one were experienced this with their furbabies? |
It looks like a tapeworm to me. |

His on heartgard plus, my wife is shocked and doesn't want to come near him now. |
Thanks everyone! I've seem pictures of worms but to see something this big come out of a small Yorkie is terrifying! |
I agree, it does look like a tapeworm. Please tell your wifey that worms ARE icky for sure. Dogs get tapeworms by swallowing an infected flea, so with an appropriate de-worming and good flea control, you can rid your sweet little pups from tapeworms! Just to add a bit of humor, at one time in the US and currently in other countries, the beef tapeworm is used as a HUMAN weight loss diet! Here are a couple of links... I am using heartgard plus - is there something better than I can be using? |
yep, I agree, looks like a tapeworm. Have you called your vet and did you clean up that poop and the poop area. Please tell your wife it's not the babies fault he has tape worms, puppy will sense your wife's anxiety and feed off of this. If you have not already done so, I suggest to call your vet. |
Oh my goodness! Max had a tapeworm last year, but his came out in small pieces. Took him to the vet to confirm and they gave him a one dose medicine that took care of it. |
Maximo - what medicine did your vet give Max? |
It's interesting. I did some quick research and it said you usually don't see a whole tape worm like this unless they throw up. Usually you will see some small pieces or segments. Interesting that this came out of his backside! BTW, I would probably be freaked out to see this too! |
I agree, your best option is to take the worm to the vet for a positive ID and get the appropriate meds for your pup. There are OTC meds, but that wouldn't be an option that I would suggest, especially for a pup. |

I don't know of any tapeworm preventatives, but they are carried by fleas, so if you can control fleas and keep your dog from eating an infected flea, that will help prevent tapeworms. Here is a WebMD article: Dog Tapeworms ? Causes, Treatments, and Prevention |
You guys are awesome with all the info!!! I will have to talk to my vet and get him cleared up. |
My dogs never have fleas and my Olivia had a tapeworm about a month ago. To this day I have no clue how she got them. The vet gave her drontal for it. There is no prevention for tapeworms...if the dog ingests a flea they can end up with tapeworms. |
