Sick Toy Yorkie
 

I have a sick 7 week old toy yorkie. I just got him last night and he was fine. After brining him home he got diarrhea, just liquid. He also won't eat today. First thing this morning I went to Petco and got Nutri-Cal, which he will not eat on his own either. I have been force feeding him the Nutri-Cal, I cannot get him to eat any normal food at all. He is drinking water, I have been putting a little sugar in the water as well.

What can I do?

This sounds very serious, my advice would be to get him to a vet as soon as possible. Honestly he was too young to be taken from his mom and litter mates at only 7 weeks. Hope he gets better soon.

So sorry your baby is sick, you must be very upset and concerned.
First have you called the breeder and asked for help? Wherever you got him from he is very young at 7 weeks to be taken from his mother and out in the wide world. You did well to give him water and Nutrical, but he really needs to see a vet ASAP or he could get very sick. He is too young to let this go on as he will get dehydrated and whatever ails him could get worse. Hope you are able to get him in today either with his vet or an ER vet. Nutri-cal needs to be followed by food, it shouldn't replace food. If they don't eat after having nutri-cal, their sugar can drop. Have you checked his gums? They should be moist & pink in color. You need to get food into this young pup, baby food (no onions in it in any form), kibble mixed w/goat's milk, canned puppy food like Royal Canin Puppy Mousse. The puppy needs to eat!

Please take him to the vet asap, today is Sat & most vets are open. Don't wait til later bc you might end up @ the ER which costs so much more & most vets close on Sundays.

He might need fluids bc young puppies get dehydrated fast & they go downhill even faster. The stress of the new home w/out his momma, new food causing digestive upset, even too much nutri-cal (& sugar water) causes the runs. Please see a vet asap, he might also have worms/ parasites.

How is the puppy, did you see a vet?

He needs food ASAP! Nutri cal and sugar water won't sustain him.

I fed "Royal Canin mini baby dog " from 6 weeks until about ten weeks at my vet's recommendation. You can buy it at petsmart and petco along with most other major pet food retailers. Moisten the food with a little warm water. He will need to eat every 4-6 hours at 7 weeks old.

I agree with everyone above. Your pup needs a vet and real food now! These little ones can go down so fast.

How is your pup? were you able to get him to a vet?

Giving him the nutrical is not going to help unless your following it up with real food or he is just going to crash after his sugar raises. Only bad breeders let the pups go that early so there is no telling what could be wrong with him so he needs to go to the vet now or you could lose him.

please update what is happening with your little one. Diarrhea and a 7 week old puppy are not good. I pray that you went to the vet.

Please get this unfortunate little soul to a vet ASAP....he is very sick and at such a young age, he has absolutely NO reserve, and he can loose ground and die on you very quickly. Praying for this baby........

You truly need to get to a vet ASAP, seriously. 7 week old puppies shouldn't even be adopted out yet, they're too young and vulnerable at this age. Liquid diarrhea is a VERY bad sign in a young puppy bc they could die from it due to rapid dehydration. Not eating in any dog, any age is not a good sign -- it always means something is wrong.

PLEASE get to a vet NOW...before this puppy dies in your care.

Hello all, thank you for following this. The poor little fella died before I could even get him to the vet, I only had him for about 14 hours before he passed. He would wimper every time I left him to get anything so the last few hours I kept him in a small towl with me, constantly petting him and talking to him... He started panting for breath about 2 o'clock on Saturday and that was it.

My heart breaks for this poor little soul.....it seems like it just never ends............

I am so sorry. How very sad :(

Oh no, the poor little baby. I am so sorry, you must be devastated.
Did you contact the person you got him from as I am sure they would want to know about this drastic illness the pup had that took his life so quickly. Very sad, RIP little one, such a short life.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your new Yorkie and least they were loved when they were with you. I would speak to the breeder although this does nothing to heal your heartbreak..my deepest sympathies. Bless this poor little Yorkie .
Sadly I do no think Tennessee has puppy lemon laws like we do here in California. I too brought home a sick puppy and was at the Vets the next day.
Tennessee Texas and West Virginia do not have puppy lemon laws. In

What a sick demented breeder. Who is this sociopath?

I am going to say what everyone else is too very kind to say. You brought him home on a Friday, and overnight he had diarrehea, you posted here on Sat 2ish, and you were told in no un-certain terms to take your dog to the vet - which You Did Not Do! There are very many vets open on a Saturday!


Liquid Diarrehea in a very young pup is very concerning, coupled with no eating, is doubly even triply concering! What did you do, but go to a Petco to buy a Nutrical or similar supplement. If you knew anything about young puppies be they large or small breed dogs, you would have been on your way to a vet.


Now despite the obvious distress your pup was in, you elected to put him in a towel and not hightail to the vet, is quite distressing to me!


The morale of this story is; Don't buy too young pups Know the signs of distress in any young pup! Liquid Diarrehea and no eating is a distress SOS call for all young pups. Educate yourself on how to safely care for this little bundle of joy you have just purchased. And be ready to pay the vet bills to insure their good and long and healthy life.

Although this may seem harsh....it is very true. And while I feel very sorry for the puppy and the OP's loss I have not replied mainly because I had the same thoughts and didn't know how to express them gently. I haven't been on this forum long but I see a lot of posts asking for advice and when it's suggested take them to a vet immediately it's disregarded. I've seen many posts like this...and while I appreciate that they took the time to update us as many do not do....it doesn't change the fact that that poor pup suffered and died.....it quite possibly could have been saved if taken to a vet. It was irresponsible of #1 the breeder and #2 the OP. It was not a loose toenail....he should have been scooped up and taken to a vet before there was even a post....watery diarrehea and lack of appetite is never a good sign....in any animal of any age. You got some good advice....and I hope you continue to come here and ask questions and research before you decide to bring another pup home.

I am going to make one statement on both of these posts then I am letting it go. Yes you are right, everyone will think what you both posted, but, don't you think the OP already knows this, don't you think the OP is beating them selves up over this. Don't you think the OP is suffering over this. Why would you both want to pour salt into an open wound. This is not what YT is supposed to be about.

This very unfortunate loss of a 7 week old puppy is a learning experience for the OP and for many many other people who will read this now and in the future.

The one thing to remember for future reference, for anybody looking for help on the Internet for a sick pup ..... is that the little pups can go down so quickly, so don't sit and wait and watch, and Google for info..... Go immediately to the vet.

People need to know this before they even bring a pup home, and need to have an emergency vet plan, including ability to pay before the pup even enters their home and care.

I agree. Instead of harboring over what he should have done and didn't do. We should now be educating him on what they should do next time, if they choose to get another pup. Like, how to pick a reputable breeder and signs of a bad breeder so next time they are more informed and don't have something this tragic happen again.

I do agree with MauiGirl. I was a vet tech for 6 years under an extremely seasoned veterinarian....and it was sad to see a pup come in so very sick and find out that they waited 4 or 5 days to bring them in....mostly because they didn't realize how quickly a puppy of any stature can go from 0-60 in 5.2 as far as health. 9 times out of 10 we lost them....every once in a while it was caught early enough. So if someone sees this and realizes hey this is serious I better get to the vet....that's the purpose. But I will say that even with that experience....I still know next to nothing about yorkies!!! They are like a whole different species in themselves! Which is why I scour yorkietalk 😊
