Car seat injury :( Just a head's up to others: So we were traveling and left the dogs strapped into their carseat when we stopped for breakfast. Came back to find Eddie favoring his left front leg. I'm assuming he got the strap caught and hurt himself. Gave him some Rimadyl and his condition improved. He's about 50 percent 20 hours later and I'm not planning a vet visit if he's all better by tonight. Not sure what the solution is. A crate would make the most sense. At the least, I think I'll unstrap if we stop like that. Has anyone else encountered this? What's your solution? |
Poor Eddie. :( We have had some car seat tether tangles. Having 2 dogs in one seat seems to make things worse. Separate seats are a little better. If you are stopped, and you trust your dogs not to leave their seats and not climb around the car, untethering is ideal. That is what I do when we stop on errands, although someone always stays in the car. That might be the only reason M&T behave and stay in the seat. I hope Eddie's leg feels better. |
Thanks. Yeah, it was a doublewide car seat for both dogs. In retrospect, I think I will unclip at stops. |
Sorry to hear about Eddie's injury I hope he feels better soon. Thanks for the heads up. |
hope he is better soon |
Thanks for the concern, everyone. As I suspected, it appears to have been just a soft-tissue strain. He was running around today like nothing happened. |

Glad Eddy is okay |
Good to hear that Eddie is back to his self after his injury. Thankful is was minor. My only incident was with a safety harness. I only left Ruby in the car for a total of 5 mins as I stood talking to a friend in her driveway and it was like Houdini. She escaped out of that thing as if it had melted off of her. |
Glad Eddie is already feeling better, yay! Thanks for posting about this bc I too will now unstrap if needed. I wonder if you shortened the tether a bit more, would that help in preventing tangles too? |
Glad to hear Eddie is better. We very rarely leave ours in the car (traveling we use drive thru places or places where you can eat outside) but if I have to I leave them strapped in because I'm afraid they will get out when I open the door. |

I always leave mine strapped in- but they are pretty tight so they can't move around whole lot or try to jump out. |
I dunno the best solution. I'm a little paranoid now. With a one-dog seat, I would feel a little more comfortable with them both on a shortish lead. But with two dogs right next to each other, I'm thinking it would be easy for them to get tangled and hurt. And OMG, if one caught on the other's neck, it could be disastrous! |
Glad to hear Eddie is feeling better. |

Do you think that it would be less stressful and better if both Eddie and Jillie were strapped in the back seat so that they can not get tangled up with one another? (one on either side of the car) |

Great "heads up" discussion. I use a car seat for Cali. I have found the the tether I made that goes around the headrest on the seat instead of the one that is attached to the dog carseat works best. Seems like the one hooked to the head rest is up higher and she does not get tangled up in when she moved around on longer trips. Glad Eddie is better! |
I am so glad Eddie is better. I recommend crates for all car travel, and yes the crates have to be tethered or strapped down. I have a hard-sider crate for Razzle, and the wire crates for the big dogs. In our recent car accident, all dogs came through it better than myself. A slight shifting of crates but then the tethering clamped on and all was well. Just as a side note, dogs should be in their crates, without leashes as they can get tangled up etc. Which means training them, so that when you open the crate door, they wait to have their leashes put on..... |
