Abnormal Heart? UPDATE Original Post: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...mal-heart.html So, I took our Magnus to see the cardiologist today. He's been diagnosed with Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). If you aren't sure what it is - you can read about it in the link below. Because this vessel didn't close on its own, it needs to be done surgically. With surgery he can still live a very good and full life. Without the surgery, he's been given a year or so to live. Poor little guy. He's getting to be VERY expensive. So, while I'm pretty stressed about the cost - I'm happy to know that there is something that can be done and that we'll get the chance to have him around for many years! Surgery isn't scheduled yet, but she (the cardiologist) would like to do it within the next month or two. I say the sooner the better! Patent Ductus Arteriosus - Congenital Heart Disease of Dogs |
Oh gee, sorry to hear about this problem - but relieved that something can be done about it - sort of a double edged sword, isn't it. How old is he? I'm hoping that other than this he is basically healthy. You are taking such good care of him! You are a good Yorkie parent:D |

Contact your breeder....this is a concern for the breeder and surely it is included in the contract/health guarantee you got from your breeder. She should be assuming the majority of the cost incurred for this testing/surgery......good luck with your baby and the impending surgery. |

Oh gosh, so sorry to hear he will need surgery - I know that's a major expense and probably not anticipated. I'm so happy you're giving him a chance at life though - bless your heart. Can you contact the breeder to see if they can help w/ the surgery as well? |

Thanks, Wylie's mom and Cha Cha. Wylie's Mom - Its a HUGE expense. Its almost embarrassing to admit we'd spend this kind of money on a dog. The appointment yesterday was over $900 and the surgery is anywhere from $4500 to $5500. I've been pretty stressed over it - But we'll still survive - lol. I honestly don't see a point in contacting the breeder. I wasn't too impressed with her from the onset. She was all about the money. When I said we'd "take him" - she says "Can't say I'm going to miss him" and then turned to the mom and said "hahaha - you lost your baby today". So, yeah. We're just going to take care of him ourselves and move past it. Cha Cha - The cardiologist seems REALLY good - I felt very confident in here. So,that's a good sign! Thanks again everyone. Our little Mia was diagnosed by the vet the day we brought her home, back in March. She had the surgery at UT Vet Hospital, and just today we took her back there for her final ultrasound. She passed with flying colors and will now live a completely normal life. By the way, our breeder refunded our money so we could put it toward her surgery; maybe yours would do the same. Good luck! |
We have had a few pups over the years with PDA. One recent one who is still with us is Londyn. Every one of them were caught early enough that there was no long term damage. That is key in these repairs. So happy that you are able to provide this surgery for Magnus. That is a very high price ... maybe the cost is more in CA? I don't know. But I believe the average around here is $3,000 - $3,500 And, of course, it is important that you have a surgeon with a good reputation that you trust. Please keep us posted. |
