Help! Help! Help! Bad ear infection! Hey guys! I am a first time dog owner and my 3 month yorkie has a bad ear infection! She cries and scratches her ear all day and night. I looked inside and it has red scabs and even a little blood inside from her scratching so hard. She wont even let me clean it. I thought it was fleas at first because I had just got rid of them. However, after doing reseqrch and noticing the excessive face rubbing, paw licking, and ocassional sneezing I learned she may have an allergy. I feed her Royal Canin which has corn in it that I learned can cause an allergic reaction. I don't know what it is but I need help becuase the vet is closed for Memorial day and won't open back up until Tuesday! Thats 2 more days! Helpp.please! |
Welcome to YT. She is a bit young her food allergies. I'd wonder about ear mites, yeast, and bacteria, infection. Two days is too long when they are tearing at an ear so excessively. You may need to go to the ER to get some relief. |
I agree with Crystal to bring her to an ER vet in order to get meds for an ear infection...whether it is due to ear mites or whatever...she needs relief. Please update how she is when you can. |
Murphy's Law - holiday weeken:mad: This puppy is too miserable to wait 2 days. |

Chances of this being an allergy to her food is highly unlikely. I suspect ear mites, with a secondary infection brewing....she needs to get some relief.....she needs to see a vet ASAP. Have you ever had an itch you could not scratch? It is torture! Revolution heartworm med also addresses ear mites.....and if you have any other pets, ear mites are very contageous, so if it is ear mites, be prepared to treat everyone! |
Your precious, loved baby is simply miserable. Get in a car, travel however far you need to and get her to the nearest vet. A serious infection, unremitting itching and lesions are extremely painful as the ear is severely inflamed, swollen and tender. The itching is almost worse than the pain. The stress from pain and itching is severe. The head-rubbing is from the dog trying anything to get relief!!! Every movement of the head of the ear itself hurts. The infection could reach to the ear drum and perforate it, go into the brain if not stopped. I couldn't stand to see my dog ever get close to this bad without getting them to vet and insist on pain medication, antibiotic/anti-fungal treatments after whatever testing were necessary to determine the type/extent of the infection. You owe your dog the same type of medical care you would get for yourself or your child and I promise, if you had an ear infection that severe, you'd find a way to get yourself some immediate help and pain relief! If your dog could talk, the poor little thing would be saying, "Mommie, please help me now if you really love me. I can't stand this anymore!" |
I agree with all above, this baby needs medical attention now. Take her to ER ASAP. This should not wait another 2 days till your vet is open, she is suffering now, and will cause more damage to her ear with scratching and rubbing. Think of her as a 2 y/o human baby. Would you let a baby cry in pain for 2 days because your Dr. is closed. ER, ASAP. |
You all must be talking about a HUMAN er, because for one it's Sunday, everything's closed. On top of that it's a holiday tomorrow. I'm not just "letting my puppy sit here and suffer". I've been searching and trying to find a local place that's open. I'm obviously interested in getting get some help if I made an account on here. I was hoping someone would offer some advice as to how I can help her ease her pain during the meantime. Thanks for nothing. I already know I need to get her to an er asap! |
Sorry, we all know its a furbaby, all city, states, towns, have emergency clinics, or veterinarians. My vet is a 24/7, 365 days a year vet, yes very lucky for me, I know. Cost is more for emergencies, but in these cases money is never an object. We are not trying to be rude, no one this site can suggest what to do till you get her to a vet, we cannot see your dog. It could be one of many things, or "many" things. We are trying to help you by saying to see a vet. And as your last post, we see that is what you are trying to do. Good luck. |
I just googled emergency vet in Statesboro Ga. (if this is the state you live in) it gives you many sites, maybe there is something close to you. Again good luck |

Ear mites are terrible but they show themselves with some head-shaking, rubbing and scratching and that's the time you go to the vet - after a few headshakes and a couple of scratches. Normally, no matter what else is going wrong in one's life, a person doesn't wait until it's this bad because they can't stand to see their dog dealing with such agony, let alone when one knows a holiday weekend is approaching and it will require a vet ER to get care. Still, many vets are open on Memorial Day part of the time after noon. This dog must be seen by a real vet and not diagnosed by online amateurs, tests done and the little baby diagnosed as to what is causing her terrible itching to the point she's scratching so constantly and hard she's drawing blood and forming scabs. The ear mites can advance into a serious inflammation and then infection sets in. And with will and enough determination, one can drive to a veterinary ER 24/7/365 - yes, they are open even on Christmas - if it takes 200 miles but at least the dog will get help before it goes berserk. Poor little miserable dog. |
Yes matese, Ive contacted every single one, Gateway animal hospital, best friends, etc. Every one. Thats what I get for going to college on a small town.Im going to see about flying somewhere. Thanks for the happy helpful comments. God Bless! |
How long has your dog had the problem with the ears? When did the head-shaking, scratching, head-rubbing start? From the gist of your OP, it sounds as if this has been going on for some time. I know you know his now but if you are going to own a dog, you must get serious symptoms checked out early, especially when the weekend or a holiday are approaching. Since you didn't, you either now must rent a car or get a buddy or fellow student to drive you to the nearest vet. I know this sounds harsh but it's a fact - having a puppy, you should already know your nearest ER vet locations and have a ready map to it in case of emergency, as you know since vets aren't always open and sick or injured dogs can't wait for care. Check under Emergency Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals in your area or the nearest or next nearest biggest town or city - they are always open when regular vet hospital are closed. If there is a PetSmart near you, many of them have a Banfield's Pet Hospital in them and they are open part of the day on many lesser holidays. Heck, I think ours was open part of the day on New Year's Day this year. |

Statesboro GA Veterinarians | Statesboro Bulloch Regional Veterinary Hospital Check out this site. Click on the emergencies tab. They have a number to call to talk to a vet for after hour emergencies. |
There is nothing we can tell you to do to ease the pain that's why we are saying she needs to get to the er vet. Have you tried searching within an hour of where you are? This baby should not be flying if she has an ear infection it will hurt her ears worse. |
This vet practice says that they have a vet on call to meet during off hours: Statesboro GA Veterinarians | Statesboro Bulloch Regional Veterinary Hospital |

I sincerely hope you have been able to find a vet for your little one. If it is or progresses to an infection, just as with humans, it can affect her hearing. |

Your pup depends on you and has no choice in this matter. I hope you think long and hard and do what is right for her....do what a responsible pet owner would do. As you said in your last line, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.....SO DO IT! |
What I don't understand is she said she couldn't find a vet to take her pup to. It took me 10 seconds and a simple Google search to find a vet in her city that has 24/7 after hours emergency services. She must not have tried very hard. |
Did you get this pup to the vet, is there an update? I so hope you went to one of the vet offices that the member's found for you. Your little girl sounds like she is in very bad shape right now. Best of luck and please keep us posted on her progress. |

Just what can strangers do -- through an internet discussion board -- for someone else's dog that has an ear infection? All we can do is to try and help you find a vet, which several here have done. You are the only one that can do something directly for your pup -- take her to the vet -- so I hope you have already done that so that her painful ear infection is being treated. |
If for some reason, I couldn't get to a vet and ZoE had ear problems, I would rinse her ears with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water, twice a day, until I could get her to a vet. |
OK, the OP was just hoping there was a stopgap remedy, or first aid, to provide relief until she can get to the vet. Unfortunately, itchy, irritated ears are usually yeast or mites, sometime both at once, calling for different remedies or risk making the situation worse. It takes practice, and a microscope, to tell the difference, so a vet is essential. |

Any updates? Hope your girl saw a vet for this bc her ear can be infected & needs antibiotic drops. Any online advise or home remedy would not have helped. Especially ear cleaners, bc they all have some form of alcohol in it as a drying agent & it would have stung her ears badly since she has open sores from itching. It sounds like her ears were bothering her for sometime, hope you took her in. |
Very sad ... I do hope this poor pup was seen by a vet and is ok now. |
