Teddy has bladder stones Teddy's urinary crystals have now turned to stones. We have previously dissolved his type of stone (struvite) with a medication (uroeze) added to his food and for a while we were successful and he was clear. The crystals came back and despite trying to flush them out by liquifying his diet and do diet alterations, he now has stones. He also has mineralization in the kidney, consistent with chronic renal disease. This was very upsetting because Teddy is only 5 years old. I hope we can find a good plan for him and try to address this again. I am waiting on further test results. Teddy is a rare sterile struvite maker. This is a problem seen in less than 1% of dogs and most of the time a dog with struvite stones has a urinary infection or kidney infection. The diet he has been on for the past 30 days should have dissolved the stones but instead Teddy made some!! Unfortunately they are too big to pass. The internal medicine specialist is waiting for guidance from the vet nutritionist on the best option for Teddy and then we will go from there. If he does not dissolve the stones with the diet, he will need to undergo general anesthesia for a hydropulsion procedure to break up the stones and they will squeeze them out of his bladder. My poor little Teddy. I was so optimistic and had the appt w/ the IMS before the ultrasound and we were discussing his long range diet and plan options. I was literally just astounded to hear he had stones! UGH!!! |
So sorry sending Prayers |
I'm so sorry you and Teddy are going through this. P-Nut, Pickles and I send hugs. |
Aw! Poor Teddy! Sending well wishes... feel better soon! |
Oh, gosh, Cathy. Doesn't sound good! Poor Teddy baby - bet he's not feeling that good. I'll be praying that the best course of treatment is figured out and he's soon on his way to fixing this awful problem. I hope he doesn't try to pass one of those things. Poor little ones - why do they have to have problems at all? All they ever do is try to make life happy and good and they get hit with things like this. Not fair! I'm so sorry he's going through this and his mommie is left to stress and worry about him so. |
Poor Teddy. Saying prayers for him. So sorry you are dealing with this...I can totally relate. |
I'm so sorry to hear you both are going through this. I hope he is able to dissolve them. Many years ago my husband had several bouts with kidney stones, and only having lithotrypsies allowed them to pass. It makes me so sad to hear that Teddy has to deal with this. |
I am just praying these really are struvite again. The internist and the nutritionist both told me that usually dogs tend to make one kind of stone. If it is struvite we can dissolve it but as I mentioned we might have to use a commercial diet or go back to the uroeze. The commercial diet used to dissolve struvite -- the one really proven to do it -- is the Hill's s/D and that diet is very high in fat and in this breed I'm worried we could set off pancreatitis. Right now I am giving him royal canin SO cans but I doubt it will work based on the in home pH readings I'm getting already. I feel bad for teddy. He's just a mess of a dog. He's so sweet too and he deserves good health. Keep him in your prayers. |
I am very sorry to hear that Teddy has stones. :( Praying for your sweet little boy and you. |
Oh my. Poor Teddy. Prayers that he will get through all this without too much discomfort. Hugs from Wallee. |
Poor Teddy. Sending wishes for a fast recovery. |
Teddy is very luck he has you as his owner. You are always right on top of any issues and never stop unless you get to the bottom of the issue. I have no doubt you will pursue this for the very best outcome. |
Aw Cathy...so sorry to hear about Teddy\'s stones. I know he will get the very best care possible and you\'ll get him well, so my thoughts will be with you as go thru figuring this all out. Hugs and well wishes! |
Teddy update Teddy\'s tests came back and his urine was "unremarkable" and his culture was negative. In a weird way I was hoping they would find an infection as the cause of the stones. But, he\'s had a total of 9 cultures now and we never grow anything. My little zebra. |
sorry to that Teddy is having issues with stones. I can remember my uncle in so much pain when i was young and he got stones a few times. you could hear him scream when he finally past the horrible thing. I sending many healing thoughts for Teddy and sorry his culture didn\'t offer any cause for them. |
