Is she on any pain meds now? While pain meds keep her comfortable, I suppose in masking the pain she may be a little more brave in using the leg. Just my guess. When Tiki limped it was probably due to being painful when she put weight on the leg, as she didn't have pain meds. You are a great Dad to Bella. |

Sounds like she's doing great. |
Don't make me put the cone of shame on you, Bella!!! The little scamp has learned to reach around the side of her inflatable E-collar and lick her incision! I have a few options: (1) watch her more closely, (2) inflate her E-collar to the max in the hopes that she can't reach around it as easily, or (3) the dreaded cone of shame. I really want to avoid the cone of shame because I know it would make her (and me) miserable. She's resting quietly in her crate right now. The next time I take her out, I'll put more air in her inflatable collar. It's fairly firm now, but could be fuller. I haven't added any air since I got it for her yesterday. Since I last wrote, she's occasionally using her leg to walk/hop on. She's also interested in her toys and nylabone. |
I tried inflating Bella's E-collar while she was wearing it, and as soon as I started blowing into the valve, the E-collar was in my hand and Bella was 10 feet away, LOL! Inflating the E-collar seems to help a little in keeping Bella from licking her wound, but she's still trying. If this doesn't work, it's the cone of shame for her. I went upstairs and told my partner to watch Bella while I was fetching hydrogen peroxide to clear her incision, and as I pulled the hydrogen peroxide out of the medicine cabinet, there was Bella standing next to me. I shouted down to Walter, "How did Bella get up here?" and he replied, "She climbed the stairs." ARRGGGGHHHH!!! She's such a scamp! She didn't injure herself at all climbing the stairs, but ARRGGGGHHH!!!!! anyways. I asked Walter how she got away from him, and he said that he turned his back on her for a second and she was gone. Okay, while I was writing this, she was able to turn and lick her incision with the fully inflated E-collar! I took it off and put the hard plastic E-collar back on her. She's not as miserable with it as she was during her first days because she has more energy. I hand fed her a quarter cup of water using a tablespoon, and now she's back in her crate. What a day! |
Bella had a good night and she's a little dynamo this morning. It looks like she will be wearing the hard plastic E-collar for the duration. She's eating okay, but not drinking as much as I'd like to see her drink. I might take her E-collar off this evening for a little while and see if she will drink from her bowl then. I hate holding tablespoons of water up to her for her to drink--she spills half when I do that--but I'll do it if she needs it for proper hydration. |
You could try to mix a little chicken broth with water and see if she will lap that up. |

How much should I dilute the broth if I want to get Bella to drink her water? Should I use 1/4 cup of broth to 3/4 cup of water, or is that too strong or too dilute? |

Yes solid fat is better to skim off. Your dilution sounds good. You'll have all the fat off so it will be fine. I give it to teddy diluted about 50/50 and he loves it. If you want to make better chicken salad, you could roast the chicken first then use the carcass for a bone broth for Bella after. If you do that, you'll need to boil down the bones and skin for longer (3-4 hr). |

We have 2 1/2 quarts of tasty chicken broth and a whole bunch of fall-off-the-bone tender chicken ready to be made into chicken salad. Everything is scalding hot right now, so we'll let everything cool down until bedtime and put it in the refrigerator overnight. Bella will have to wait until tomorrow to try her broth. Bella is doing even better today, having more energy than ever and wanting to play tug of war with her long skinny fox toy. I'm not playing that game with her because I'm afraid that it will stress her leg too much, so she's just carrying the fox around in her mouth. When I got home from work and went upstairs to change my clothes, I put Walter in charge of watching Bella. She got away from him and bounded up the stairs to my side. Bella didn't injure herself, but I'm questioning Walter's skills as a baby sitter, LOL! Bella is curled up and sleeping on my back right now. |
Sounds good. **Note to self: attach one end of leash to Bella, and the other end to Walter when he is baby sitting. :D:D:D |

Sounds like little Bella is coming along well and has loving caregivers who watch her like a hawk, attend to her every need and will keep her from getting into any trouble. She's obviously a very well-loved little girl and I hope and pray she will get an excellent result from this surgery and one day be able to live a fairly normal life again. |

Typical yorkie. Little characters. That's great that she is doing well. :) |
Rough Night for Bella, or The Princess and the Peas. I gave Bella a small handful of frozen peas as a treat before bedtime, and she drank about 1/3 cup of chicken broth mixed with water just before bedtime. She woke us up at 1:30 AM throwing up. She threw up a few partially digested peas and some clear liquid. We threw another blanket on top of her soiled blanket because it was the middle of the night, and she smacked her lips for a while, and then went to sleep again. This morning, we laundered everything and she has a nice clean bed in her crate again. We gave her her daily dose of Metacam, she ate 1/3 cup of her Blue Buffalo food, and 1/6 cup of broth/water mixture. I just wanted to see if she could keep food down, and she did. It's a mystery why she threw up in the night. I was concerned that the broth disagreed with her, but now I'm thinking that maybe I gave her too many peas before bedtime. She swallowed a lot of them whole, wolfing them down since she loves them so much, so maybe they irritated her stomach? I'll call the vet a little later for alternatives for keeping her hydrated because she still turns her nose up at pure water. I've heard people say good things about Pedialyte. Does the taste of Pedialyte appeal to dogs? |
I feed peas to mine and they like it. In fact Winston's diet is beef and peas. I always cook them though. I doubt the broth would set her off since it was diluted and skimmed of fat. But you never know. My dogs like coconut water which is good for hydration but I hate to try things if they are having upsets unless I know they can handle it. Maybe you can ask the vet about giving her Pepcid for a few days. Pedialyte I haven't used. I would probably do nothing by mouth and feed a small meal tonight. |
Bella has been through a lot this week. Sometimes they just get sick and we never know why. Hope she has had a better day!! |
Hi there. Glad your sweet baby is recovering well. My Kiko had surgery for ccl and mpl on March 15th. She was also on meloxicam/metacam. One of its possible side effects is stomach upset, so it is possible that your pup's tummy upset was from that. Hope she is feeling better today. |
