Human error--but Piper pays. 1 Attachment(s) Attachment 397481 (at the vet--I didn't have time to put their harnesses on them, so they were loosely leashed with ID collars. :() My 8 month old female--Merry Piper--has never stopped acting like she's teething. We keep her contained to safe areas and keep dangerous things out of her reach, but failed twice in that today. My DH left his Trident gum somewhere (I'm not sure where) and the puppy found it when I didn't shut the gate behind me going upstairs. She climbs like a tiny mountain goat and moves fast, but I noticed she had something in her mouth pretty quickly when she crouched in her "I've got a secret" pose. I only managed to retrieve half a stick of gum--no paper and no idea where the rest of the gum might be (if there is more). Long story short: both pups went to the vet immediately, had their stomachs emptied, and Keegan is fine. Piper's tummy contained no food but bits of her (now-discarded) toy basket, a gum wrapper, and a few things even the vet couldn't identify. We don't know if gum had already passed through the stomach. She is scheduled for bloodwork in the morning to see how her system is handling the toxin and we have the info for the emergency vet near us (I've heard from a local YorkieTalk-er that they are excellent, and my regular vet seems to agree). I'd just like to ask that anyone who might please send some good thoughts, vibes, prayers, etc. for my sweet little Merry Piper...she doesn't deserve to be ill because both her humans screwed up on exactly the same day. Xylitol...I have a new hatred for artificial sweeteners. |
Praying for your little Merry Piper...... |
Prayers for your baby...I hope she gets better soon! Please give us an update when you can. |
Thank you both so much. I know that you all understand how upsetting this is. :( |
Prayers for Piper... |

Sending prayers |
Sending prayers and best wishes for Piper. LOL She does climb and eat like a mountain goat. We used to joke that Buster's middle name was "Leave It" because he was like a little vacuum. I hope all goes well with the blood work. |
Sending prayers your way. |
I hope everything goes well for her |
Don't be hard on yourself. You knew exactly what to do. Most people wouldn't have. |
Prayers for Piper, and hope all is well soon. It's good that you got them in quickly. |
Prayers for Piper hoping everything turns out okay |
You did great in helping your kiddo as fast as you possibly could, so good job, first and foremost :). Hoping for good test results and that all is okay. |
sending many prayers for piper and good thing you reacted so quickly getting her to the vet!!! |
Checking for an update.... |
Thank you, everyone, Piper has stayed quiet and seizure-free as far as I know. I missed her 11:20 appt due to a newly broken toe (mine, not hers), but she is rescheduled for 4:20 for bloodwork. Keegan has stayed very close to her, watching as though he knows something's a little "off." I will feel better after the labs, but I am hoping that we caught it in time and am encouraged by the uneventful night. Thanks again. I'll post the results in a few hours assuming that they can tell something by then. |
Prayers. |
So far, so good, so thankful Merry Piper's blood sugar was at a healthy 82 when we arrived at the vet. This is a good sign, as Xylitol poisoning causes hypoglycemia. Her liver panel won't be back until midday tomorrow, but we are optimistic that her liver, if damaged by what we couldn't get to fast enough, may have been only mildly affected and that we can offer "liver support over the next several months." She's so young, I really hope her liver has managed this well. Thank you again, everyone, for their prayers and good thoughts for Piper. |
Oh no! Sorry about your toe! Ouch! So glad to hear Piper's doing good... |
The vet said that this must be the week for pups to get into things. In addition to Piper and the gum, she's had a full day of large dogs whose owners just got Girl Scout Cookies...She said inducing vomiting in a Yorkie puppy is so much different than inducing it in big dogs who've stuffed themselves with cookies. |
Very happy to hear that Piper's blood sugar is good, and praying her liver panel brings also good news. Relieved for you that her prognosis is excellent. Girl Scout cookies -- oh no! I can only imagine how hard it must be to have a large dog that can reach things on tables and countertops. We have had only one large dog and it was a miracle that she never touched anything. |

Quick update: The vet called today and I could tell from her voice it was good news! Piper's liver panel came back looking very good, which means we got the xylitol in time and got it all. She is good to go! I am SO RELIEVED!!! And so is Piper--her digestive system is kicking back into gear and--having had a snack--she's racing around like a lunatic. :woof::yay_jump: |
Great news!! :) |
I am very happy and relieved for you to hear the great news! |
