Kandi, new YHR pup is having emergency ortho surgery....
 

I have NO idea what people think about but this latest one blew my mind. I had a few emails over the past week about a little female yorkie who was in a local shelter supposedly with mild lameness. They said she had a previous healed pelvic fracture. I figured she probably had either LP or a torn CCL and I was trying to find a group to take her since we are so jammed right now. Well, no such luck...everyone is full. On Saturday evening a friend with another rescue contacted me about this yorkie. She mentioned that she would probably be euthanized if someone did not take her. That kind of set off an alarm in my brain that something must be really wrong. I emailed them and finally got in touch this morning. Over the course of about 30 minutes I finally said I would take her ... then, shortly after that, they contacted me and said that the vet today felt she should maybe be humanely euthanized. Now mind you, I have seen her picture and no one seemed to think it was bad before today...so I called and found out that she had multiple fractures of her pelvis and her leg. I am just kind of flabbergasted at this point, but asked them to please let us at least get an ortho evaluation on her and they did release her to us. One of our members picked her up and took her to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston. My favorite surgeon, Dr. Brian Beale was there today...he is amazing with these difficult cases!

Poor little angel....she has been walking but they said they don't know how. She had to be in terrible pain. She was clearly hit by a car. They said that has been living in pain for the past 2 - 8 weeks. We don't know exactly how long but the fractures had started to heal. The leg is being rebroken since it was not in alignment. While her leg is being repaired, her pelvis may also need to be repaired it if is deemed unstable. She is in surgery right now as I post this.

Please pray for Kandi (that is what I named her because everyone who has seen her said she is as sweet as she can be). I will post updates about her surgery later on after I get the call.

Poor little baby is all I can say. I pray she makes is through all of this painful surgery and painful rehab and recovery.

They just called. Her pelvis will stay as is. Because it healed already, they cannot repair it. They had thought they might have to plate part of it...but it was stable, so they left it be.
Her leg was repaired with a plate and screws....and the knee is stable now. He said that they will decide tomorrow about discharge. There is a possibility that she will need to stay another night.
Just glad that the surgery is over and she is out of the anesthesia...and she is no longer in pain. They will keep her medicated.

I'm so glad she made it through the surgery and is medicated. Poor little girl.

I know, just horrible. I don't know what is wrong with people...how anyone could leave her like that is beyond me.

Just saw this on Facebook this morning. Prayers for the little girl and so glad she is getting the best possible treatment at Gulf Coast Specialists. How fortunate that you have something like this in your area.

Also, will make a donation for her care as soon as I can get back on a secure connection.

The people who have been around her say she is very sweet...that is why I gave her the name Kandi. :) I have not met the little baby yet

I am happy to read that Kandi did well in surgery. Her xrays are so sad to look at! Praying for her speedy recovery.

Yes, the xrays made me sick. She will definitely have some issues in the future with arthritis. The intern who called yesterday said that while her pelvis is as it is, she should be fine because there are no major problems due to it being like that. It is a major problem for me to look at. :( Her fracture was at the knee, so that is also difficult.

Waiting for the morning call to see how she is and what today's plan is.

No need for that... we are enjoying the beach, but came for a dear friend's memorial service and can't stay.

Anyway, hope Kandi is doing well this morning. Her xrays were so sad. Is she out of the hospital yet?

Oh Linda I just saw this. That sweet girl . . .seeing those pictures and then the X-ray made me cry. I hope the surgery went well and she will recover to run and play with the other pups.

I just heard from them...Kandi is being discharged today! :)

Who is going to take this baby girl? You? I just can't believe that a "shelter" would let this baby suffer while in their care. Don't they have a vet on staff or at least on call? Praying that Kandi's life will now improve and she will find a loving home.

I saw this on fb this morning, but seeing these xrays made my stomach flip. I cannot imagine that pelvis could be considered "stable" in any way, shape, or form. It is split in two and completely displaced! That poor baby is broken all over!!! How she was walking is totally beyond me!!! OMG...I want to cry for this poor baby. I think this surgery has just got to be the first in a series of repairs. She is still going to have many problems with shortening of that left leg due to the position of the pelvis. (Or pieces of pelvis...) I'm glad this surgery went well, and it is obvious this little girl is a fighter and deserves a wonderful furever home!

Actually her pelvis is intact and yes it is a bit out of kilter but it has healed and you can do more damage trying to rebreak it. I too was horrified when I saw it, but the surgeon reassured me today that it is ok. Certainly not ideal but we simply got her a bit late in the game. Someone severely neglected this poor baby. The surgeon I used is amazing and believe me if it needed to have something done...or it could be safely done, he would do it. I had given him the ok yesterday to do whatever he deemed necessary. Her leg is shorter than the other due to bone loss from the fracture site. That had broken in a way that some bone was lost. :( He said they can lose up to 20% of the bone and she did not lose that much so she should be fine. His main concern was to get that repaired and try to do it in away that MPL will not be an issue. It was an issue due to the type of fracture she had. I have no doubt that she will heal and be just fine....he is truly amazing. He is known all over the world and does things that other surgeons do not do. He once rebuilt a knee on one of my fosters that two other vets had said could not be repaired. I am SO fortunate to have access to such great care! Well, my pups and foster pups are. :)

Kandi is doing well. She ate really well which surprised me. She has taken up residence in the stroller I used for Cookie. :D So far she has taken to it just like Cookie did....going to take some pics in a few and will post. :)
She is on Metacam and Tramadol for her pain. She does seem comfortable. :) What a little trooper she is.

I've said this b4, but...they're amazing creatures! How can she have multiple fractures & re-break them & still be so sweet?! Wow so amazing,:D hope Kandi continues to do well!

Here she is in "Cookie's stroller" ... Just wish I could have groomed her before her surgery. Now she will have to wait until the sutures are out.

This one does have vets. They did flag her for rescue but no one was responding. The rescues are all full ... we were...I just could not let her die and stretched a bit in taking her in. I am a bit surprised that they did not know all of her injuries until yesterday...but in defense of them, they are better than many. The sad thing is that they are all overwhelmed with sick and injured pups .. and there is not enough funding to fix them all. The problem is just totally unbelievable ...I think that anyone who surrenders/dumps a dog in a shelter should have to do community service there to see what the real deal is. Heck, maybe all dog owners should have to...then maybe they would see the light? I don't know the answer really...but people who advise against spay/neuters should definitely have to work in a shelter.

Well, it made me cry to see that sweet little thing and her beautiful eyes and know what she's been through and still has to go through. Bless her poor little heart. I can barely type this. LJ, I'll never know HOW you hold it together and do what you do. I bow to you.

You just plod along, take care of them, and wish you could kick someone's bare a$$.

Thanks so much for this info. Makes me feel better. Humans are not as resilient, and an xray like that on a human would mean terrible things. We could learn something from our canine friends. Of course, daily I am amazed that people come to the ER with 10 out of 10 pain for some bs crap that I wouldn't even see a doctor for, and here is this pup, broken all to hell, who just kept on keeping on...amazing!!!
