My Poor Peek A Boo...
 

He'll be 17 Dec 12, if I don't kill him first.

Eye junk... I thought is was old dog yucky eyes, till I saw some puss. Been cleaning his eyes every morning and sometimes again at night... mostly the outside lids. After his bath I noticed more puss, so I decided to use a rinse in his eye. As the puss cleared away, I thought I saw a huge tear or it could have been a hair or more puss. Stopped what I was doing and immediately rushed him to the vet's.

We went to a new vet (new to us) in the area, so like 10 minutes away. My regular wouldn't see him as their hours just ended for the day, even though they would still be there another hour or so. So much for loyalty after 20 odd years. I really wanted him to be seen by someone he knew... he gets a bit nervous at times.

Well... he loves his new vet! They wanted to take him 'in the back' for the test but I insisted that it be done in the room with me present. They didn't argue. He was good and it is a huge ulcer type thing. (treated the same way) I had his other eye tested too, but that one was good. He got a shot for pain and two eye meds.

This was quite unexpected and scary... Peek A Boo showed no symptoms at all, no pain, no scratching, eating like a pig, getting around as good as ever. I do have other pets 3 dogs and 3 cats, but they all get along very well, so I doubt anyone hurt him.

This happened Sunday, and today his eye is looking much better. He has a recheck on Friday.

Lesson learned.... I will be checking eyes much more closely from now on. Ulcers are pretty easy to see, usually a white dot/circle anywhere on the eye. But with Peek A Boo, his eyes are a bit cloudy due to cataracts, so easy to miss on him.

Oh no! Poor Peek a Boo. :( I'm glad he has meds and is on the mend. Max was the same way -- no loss of appetite or activity level. With his first ulcer, no squinting or pawing. I don't even recall any extra tears with the first. The only difference was he wanted to be held more in the evening.

Ulcers do not always appear as white or any other color. The eye can appear perfectly normal, although usually the white of the eye and the lids will start to show irritation. The only way I could see Max's is in bright light. Even then they can be masked by tear production, especially if they are shallow. Scratches can be invisible to the naked eye.

The whiteness is potentially scar tissue that is starting to form. This can happen quickly. It can also go away. With one of Max's ulcers, he had some cloudiness and the doctor said he might have some scarring. He healed perfectly, thankfully. No scars. Can still spot a UPS truck or motorcycle a mile away.

I discovered that Max reacts badly to sterile saline eye drops, even the ones that don't have preservatives. I started using tap water again because I figured it goes in his eyes when he has a bath. Haven't had a problem since.

I am happy you had a wonderful experience with the new vet....I would imagine you will be continuing to go there now, since the other clinic showed their "true colors" and would not see a patient they had been seeing for 20+ years? I would be calling and requesting all reconrd be sent to the new vet, and then tell them WHY!!

Cathy, before making a decision about your regular vet, think about who made the decision. I once had a problem with an employee of my vet .. long story, but to make it short, I wrote a letter to my vet and her partner. I informed them that if the rules set down by their fairly new employee were their rules, then I would be moving along. I received an apology and that employee shaped up quickly. She did not last long at the place, but that was bound to happen the way she was acting. To quote a doctor I once knew who kept having receptionist issues, "Good help is hard to find".

God bless Peek A Boo. I am so glad you took him to the vet. You truly are a Yorkie lover and I know Peek A Boo has lived a wonderful life because of you.

Poor Peek a Boo . . glad that he is on the mend and that both you and he like the new vets. It hard switching vets because of loyalties but sometime its necessary to do so.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I have never thought of ulcers in the eye and will keep a sharp lookout for anything unusual now. I do have one with gooey eyes and I will check her often. Thanks again
