Zoey has pancreatitis again After eating her raw food this morning Zoey started throwing up four hrs later. After emptying her tummy she threw up thick white foam. Then she had diarrhea. Took her to vet and sure enough she had a second pancreatitis attack. It has been several years since the first time. She gets no people food - only her raw food And veggies at night. Now she will be on Royal Canin low fat for the rest of her life. She is a good eater so I hope there will be no problem with the change. Poor little girl. |
I'm sorry. :( She should be okay. Yup, raw is generally way too high in fat and protein (when converted to dry matter) for pups prone to pancreatitis. RC LF is an excellent choice. |
Oh poor Zoey. I hope she is feeling better soon! I have heard good things about the RC Low Fat food. |
I just gave Zoey her rc lf and she loved it. She smelled it when I opened the can and started licking the air. Lol |
I hope Zoey gets better soon. Poor little girl. I'm really glad she likes her new food. It will help her to get well. |
I'm so sorry. I feed a home cooked diet to my two-time pancreatitis dog but he also eats RC gastrointestinal low fat kibble and did very well in it. Good luck!! |

I've thought about cooking for my boys, but I've always steered clear of it because my older guy has GI problems. From an abdominal ultraound, we learned he has sludge in his gall bladder and he has scarring to his liver and mild pancreatitis....most likely due to his gall bladder problems. His stomach issues come and go...I know that stress is a trigger, but sometimes I don't know why it happens. Anyways...I'd love to have a home cooked recipe....at least to have on hand for emergencies when my boys refuse to eat their dog food. For the past 3 days, they've been protesting and boycotting their food bowls. I finally just boiled some chicken and rice tonight and they decided that was ok...but I know I didn't cook a balanced meal for them. |
Today is day two after pancreatitic attack. She no longer likes her food. I guess she loved it at first because she was so hungry from vomiting everything the day before. She slowly ate half of her food. I left it put for 40 mins and then put it in the fridge for later. I am used to her cleaning her bowl in 30 secs with the raw food. Any suggestions? |
Zoey I am so sorry that your baby is not eating the food. Is she on the canned or kibble? I have just been through this with my boy, loose stool for about 24 hours and off to the vet as he never has this. Diagnosed with mild pancreatitis...his first. He was given Cerenia, Pepcid, and low fat Hills. He never lost his appetite pre and post vet! Although the ingredients in the food are against all usual good food specifications, I know that this food does work and I give it to him! He loves both the canned and kibble. Have you tried the Hills, he may like that. Also if he is nauseous perhaps the Cerenia and Pepcid? He recovered after the vet visit and no more GI issues. After a month he is P free, from tests, but I stay on the Hills. What number did the cPL test give, was it high? Hope she is feeling better soon, it is horrible to see our pets sick. |
Zoey is on canned. She had an anti-nausea med for several days. I didn't give it to her this morning and she seems ok. I didn't see her test results but the vet came out when I came to pick her up and said that her blood test was really high. Today when I take in my insurance paper I will get a can of Hill's and see if she likes it. |
P food Poor little girl, she must not be feeling too well. Sounds like she had a nastier attack than my boy and that it will take a bit longer to recover. Until she feels better she may not want to eat much, so she may not eat the Hills either. But they say resting the pancreas is helpful, so perhaps your pup knows best? Hope the vet will give you advice when you go back. Insurance sure helps here, even a medical problem can run many $100s, for me it was about $750 so far with the retest etc. My boy was doing well so I took him to get the all clear on the P attack, and when I told the vet he was always hungry he said that he may have Cushings as well !!! AAARGHHH! I was devastated, but luckily he tested fine for all organs and functions. That was a scare I did not need. Wishing a speedy recovery for Zoey and less stress for you. Get well soon baby. |
Poor Zoey, hope she gets her appetite back. Have you considered The Honest Kitchen? Princess was on that for about a year after her colitis. Someone here suggested that food for her bc it's high in fiber & is low in fat. You can order sample sizes from their site or ask your local feed store, boutique or specialty store if they have any samples. Princess was also on premade raw & she got another colitis attack not too long ago, so I stopped giving it to her. Vet even suspected pancreatitis & did the cPL test but she didn't have it. I also gave her beef canned food & beef seems to trigger her colitis. I wasn't sure of the high fat content in premade raw food, she did so well on it...thinking it was the beef canned food that triggered it & it could've been a combo of the high fat too. I'm sticking w/low fat food for her now bc vet said her colitis can escalate to pancreatitis if we're not careful. Ordered some Grandma Lucy's...if that doesn't work out, might have to home cook. |
I tried the Honest Kitchen last year and frankly, I couldn't stand the smell. They are located here in San Diego. There was a recall on one of their products months ago for salmonella (sp). For now I'll stick with the RC and maybe shel'll learn to like it. Right now she is a walking stink bomb. She never had gas before and all she does is poot all the time. Here tummy most feel awful. I told my husband not to say a word to her if she dropped one under his nose because she can't help it. He is a sweetheart about her. |
Be patient with her and the RC food. I personally would stick with it and not decide after a day or two that she will not eat it. She may still not be feeling well. Inappetence is common after and/or during pancreatitis. |
Yes, most def stick w/the RX food...Maybe using THK as a topper or something since Zoey was not eating should've been my suggestion. I did read that pancreatitis causes a lot of tummy aches, so the pups lose appetite, it might not be the food @ all. I hope she'll begin to improve very soon! |
I'm sticking with the rx food because she requires it. I did get her to finish it by hand feeding her. With her tummy full of gas I assume she is very uncomfortable. |
You might want to back off a little bit...digestion can be hard for them when their pancreas is inflammed. We always feel that they should eat, but sometimes they just need rest. I hope she is feeling better soon. Poor baby. |
Will do. Thanks |
So sorry your baby is ill. I have two on RC prescripts. Make it taste better with Smiling Dog Kibble Seasoning by Herbsmith. Also have another who gets normal kibble but is soooo picky. He doesn't do any complaining since I started sprinkling his food with the seasoning. ~Joanne~ |
Will do. Thanks |
In a dog with a confirmed case of pancreatitis, I wouldn't not be pushing any food. Your dog's body likely knows better than you do what he can handle and if he's turning away from food, his tummy is probably still upset. As long as your little guy is well hydrated, he can go a day or two or three without food if that's what it takes for his pancreas to settle down. My little guy has had somewhat of a chronic pancreatitis issue. When I do start feeding him after an acute episode, I start with several very small, very bland meals per day and see how he tolerates it. I generally give him only a bit of boiled white potato, mashed well, with a very small amount of boiled chicken breast every few hours and increase the amount each day. If he's tolerating the potato/chicken well after a few days, I then switch him to the Royal Canin Gastro Low Fat. His vet has me give sub q fluids at home until he's back to eating well to make sure he stays hydrated. Depending on how severe the pancreatitis is (Did you have the Spec cPL? What was the number?) it can take weeks for the pancreas to completely heal and during that time a dog is very susceptible to a relapse. He should stay on a bland, low fat diet for at least the next several weeks. Hope your little guy is feeling better soon. Pancreatitis can be very scary and is nothing to fool around with. I didn't get the blood test numbers. When I came in to pick her up the vet came out to the counter and said her values were quite high indicating pancreatitis. I was just coming from a dr's app myself and feeling quite ill. |
Well I hope she's feeling better for you this evening. When my little guy has a flare up, just 24 hours without food and he's well on the road to recovering and wanting to eat. Diana and Scooby |
Unfortunately, Zoey must eat something at night or she will vomit bile in my bed before we get up. This is kind of a catch 22. Should give her tummy a break and have to give her something to keep from having it empty. I just washed my feather blanket today so she will probably vomit on it in the morning. Oh well, I have nothing better to do if I have to wash it again. It takes four hrs to dry the thing. |
Zoey Poor you, I do understand how concerned you are about your baby. It is natural for us to feel bad when they will not eat. Sorry to keep bringing up my dog, but we have been through bad times when I felt helpless and worried about him. He had the throw up in the early am even without pancreatitis and the vet prescribed Pepcid at night and a small meal before bed. That worked very well. When he recently got the horrible P the vet suggested Pepcid at night and in the morning as well. That also did the trick. He is 10 lbs and takes a 1/4 of a 10 mg tablet per dose. Perhaps just give enough food to allow him to take the meds. I use the canned food to wrap the pill in. I feel so sorry that you are also not feeling well and know that it is harder to deal with a sick dog when you are sick too. Hang in there, take care of you too, and soon things will look up and you both will feel better. Hope your baby does not throw up again and that you are not having to wash the bedding again. Life must seem pretty frustrating and stressful right now and I feel for you. Hugs. |
What meds did your vet give you for Zoey? Usually with pancreatitis, rest and fluids are in order. They also usually give Reglan or Cerenia and pain meds. Did he do any of this? I just looked back and did not see any mention of these things. If she is still having pain, I would take her in again for him to take a look. Pancreatitis is very uncomfortable and they really can go downhill quickly with it. |
Zoey I think she said Zoey was on anti nausea meds for several days, don't know about pain meds. |
She was only diagnosed two days ago. I realize she was on an anti nausea drug prior to that...wondering what was done for the diagnosis of pancreatitis made on the 14th. |
Zoey I see what you are saying. In post 10 I got the impression that she was on Cerenia prior to the most recent attack? Perhaps for something else? But I don't know, I should have left it to the OP to answer. My bad. |
