Bella's spay is today! Well, today is the day of our dear Bella's spay. I dropped her off at 7:30 this morning, and they are supposed to call me right after the surgery to let me know how she did and when I should pick her up--it's 2 PM and no word yet. I'm not worried... yet. They will also remove her extra baby teeth and microchip her. They said that should would not need an Elizabethan collar unless she wants to get an acting job in a historical movie--whoops, I mean unless she licks and picks at her incision site. Bella can be quite a handful, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she acts sensibly after surgery. I will post an update after I pick her up... |
I hope Bella recovers really quickly after her spay and that she will soon be free of pain. If she starts licking her incision, you could put a baby onesie on her backwards. Her tail can come out by the snaps. |

Praying for a quick recovery |
Hope Bella will have an uneventful surgery & a quick recovery! Mom to Hot Rod makes the kiss-e collar, it's a soft e-cone. They're great for post surgery, grooming & many other uses, even for training! Just fold the bottom tip & they can eat & drink w/it on too. The Kiss-E Collar |
Wishing you all the best on this very nervous day. Soon she will be home, and you will be amazed at how she snaps out of it in a couple days. |
Bella is back from her spay. They did laser surgery, and used stitches that have to come out in two weeks. She also had only two baby teeth remaining that they extracted--both canines. Her blood work was completely normal! She was happy to be home, but she is sleeping it off right now. Thanks for the well wishes! |

Prayers for her recovery. |
I am so glad everything went well. I am glad you were able to get laser done. Sending good thoughts and blessings for a quick recovery |
Bella is up and about this morning, but she is clearly tender from her surgery. She wasn't prescribed any take-home pain killers. She is eating, drinking, and peeing properly, but she is not pooping on her potty pad like she normally would--she doesn't have full bowel control yet. If she is still whimpering from pain by this afternoon, I will see if we can get her some pain medication from the vet... |
Glad all went well! I would definitely get her the pain meds! |
They should have asked you if you wanted pain meds . I always request it. It keeps them comfortable. Hoping her recovery goes well. |

Glad to hear Bella is doing well after the surgery. I agree, the vet should have sent home pain meds for her. My vet doesn't even ask. She sends home with the dog and if you don't have to use them, all well and good. As far as pooping she is going to experience some pain, I know our dogs did. Sometimes it takes a couple of days for them to get comfortable again. Don't panic but you should request some pain meds. |
Thanks for the support! Bella is beginning to try to lick her stitches, but she can't reach them because they are on a part of her belly that her head simply can't reach. I will reassess in one hour and give the vet a call... |
I spoke with the vet, and she gave me a 5 day supply of metacam liquid for Bella, and an Elizabethan collar for just in case. I gave Bella a dose of metacam and she is resting quietly on my left arm as I hunt and peck this update with my right hand. I'm normally a touch typist, so any typos are Bella's fault. |
Glad to hear it went well, and that you have pain meds for the first few days. It helps them relax. |
This morning, only two days after her spay, Bella is feeling almost completely back to normal. I have to work hard to keep her from jumping on and off the couch and bed, and keep her from chasing the cat. At least she's too busy trying to get into trouble to pick at her stitches--no Elizabethan collar for now. And, she is using her potty pad properly for both peeing and pooping, and she has her appetite back. She is one tough, healthy puppy! |
I don't know how I missed this thread! I'm very happy that Bella is doing well. I am surprised that no pain med was sent home with her. At least you were able to get some though. Jasper was hard to keep down, too. Of course, Piper, the cat, didn't help the situation at all. Bella sounds like she will be completely over this very soon. Please keep the updates coming. High five paw from Jasper to Bella!! :) |

I don't know how I missed this post either! I am happy to see Bella came through her surgery well and I'm really glad to see you were able to get her pain meds. Yazmin was quite uncomfortable after her spay and was given a 5 day supply of Metacam also. Fortunately, she was more rambunctious after only 3 days so I discontinued the pain med. Praying Bella will recover quickly also. ;) |
Glad to hear that Bella is getting back to her normal self. How old is she? I will be taking Hannah in for her spay soon. I spoke to my vets office and they will determine when will be best for her after checking her out. They said that some vets prefer that they go through their first heat before spaying and some vets prefer to spay before the 1st heat. I'm not sure which is best??? I do not have any male dogs that would be able to breed her so I'm going by what my vet recommends. What did yours say? |
