I'm very sorry. I hope those who loved Mindy know that everything possible was done to try to save her. I don't know how you do this every day, Linda, but please know that you make a huge difference, and we appreciate you immensely.

This was, I believe, the hardest ever for me ... so young. We have had other young ones, but I did not have to sit and hold them as they passed. This sweet little baby never had a chance.

When I saw her this morning I was shocked...while her little tummy was swollen on Saturday, it was even worse today and they had removed fluids yesterday. She made little Mogwai sounds .. I know it was uncomfortable for her. She actually reminded me of a Mogwai..not sure I am spelling that correctly..but the little gremlin from the movie..the sweet one of course.

After reviewing the CR scan they found that she had a severe congenital anomaly. There was a portosystemic shunt and acquired shunts as well (pretty shocking in a puppy so young). There was an AV liver fistula. I had not heard of this in the liver...I found this link for those of you who might be interested.

Seven vets reviewed her case, including radiologist, board certified critical care specialist and surgeons. They told me that there was nothing we could do surgically .. that I could take her home and try to manage her medically, but it was not going to be very successful and her prognosis was poor to grave.

I totally respect their opinions there, but because this was so rare (none of them had ever seen it) I asked them to call UT and speak with Dr. Tobias. They did that...fortunately she was available and spoke with them about Mindy. She concurred with them that this was rare and agreed that there was no fix for it

...one that I believe she told them she had not seen either.

I read your notes and cried over and over...and yes, Marcy, I do believe she is with Cowboy. Steph, a friend of mine and YHR member was there today and she said the same thing. I talked to Mindy and told her about Sammy, Gabby and Sunny D and other pups who she would be seeing and I assured her they would be there for her.

That sweet little baby just laid on my chest and she kissed me over and over .. I will never ever forget her. In such a short time she left her mark on so many...precious little angel. I would have moved Heaven and Earth to save her...it just was not to be...and there was no way I would take her out of there and torture her. She is at peace now. While it was horrible for me to do, I am at peace knowing it was right for her.

Thank you so much to all of you for your kind words, your prayers and donations to little Mindy. She had a chance because of you.

I sometimes ask myself why I do this. I know that sounds selfish but I swear it is killing me bit by bit.

It's really amazing that she lived at all... I know they cannot all be saved, the others can be loved while they're here and gently shown the Way Home. She at least felt a kind hand and a gentle, loving heart before she left.

I think you are right. I keep thinking for some weird reason that she was sent to me. I have a picture here of her that had the same look that Sammy had in his last pics....as I looked at it, it hit me that maybe Sammy sent her to me. I am sure I sound a bit daft when I say that...but they had so much in common in terms of living in spite of horrible medical conditions. Of course, he was not in distress all of the time like she was, but he was a mess.

I have a picture of her kissing me...and when I went out of the room today for a few minutes, she cried for me. She only knew me from Saturday..and even that day her owner commented on how she came to me immediately as if she knew me. Just odd.
