Sago Palm Scare

Those are queen palm trees...Momo ate one of the orange fruits from those trees w/the seed & it caused a blockage & he had to have surgery to remove it. It was a horrible & very expensive experience. I was sure he swallowed it, so the vet sent me to an emergency specialist & Momo suffered for 7 days. Since it didn't appear on x-ray or colonoscopy, the specialist kept refusing my request for exploratory surgery & kept pushing anti vomit & anti diarrhea meds. Finally, the specialist felt the seed lodged between the entrance of the large intestine (on the 6th day) & got it out. Every time I see those trees, I get heart palpitations & they're everywhere here! It's not poisonous (the fruit or seed) but it gave Momo multiple severe ulcers in his stomach lining.

Yep....the squirrel here sits and taunts my pups. Crazy little thing.

YIKES...I just posted that the queen palm is ok....did not think of a blockage. I do rake them up but once in a while they get one of them. But I thought the one that Judy was talking about was the Date Palm My Queen Palm seeds don't have hairy stuff on them.

Wow, really scary!!! I don't know what I'd do if I had a neighbor who was being awkward about understanding the gravity of the Sago Palm . Thank All you actually caught everything in time though!

I am seriously annoyed with him. I called him that day and he was busy...he seemed very disinterested. I have yet to hear from him. I will wait until he is back in town (works out of town) and speak with him in person. I am going to have a flyer with information in hand. I am making one up to give to all of the neighbors. The only one I have spoken with so far is the one on the other side and she was very grateful to me for advising her. She has two pups and had no idea about the sago palm.

I thought Judy was talking about the Queen Palm bc of the orange fruit they bear. Once they fall off the tree, if it's got a fruit on it, it will rot & the seed will be left which has a brown hairy texture...that's what I thought she was referring to. But the Date Palm fruits look very similar too! The difference I noticed was that the Date Palm trees are of different height, some shorter & thicker, others taller but still has thicker trunks. Whereas the Queen Palms are all very tall w/thinner trunks than the Date Palms.

Clever idea! Perhaps there are plants in that area of your yard that need " extra watering"

I googled date palms and queen palms....it is a date palm, with those long clusters of yellow fruit....the queen palm picture shows a cascade of yellow flowers, all bunched together...but the date palm has the actual DATES growing on them, in huge yellow clusters....Thanks for your help in determining what these are!.....

I have queen palms and did not think that was what you meant. I really doubt that the dates would hurt them BUT I suppose and obstruction. I don't like my pups chewing on anything.

The squirrel has not been here for the past couple of days. Wonder if he died from that seed???? It's weird...he is always here when my pups go out in the morning...it's like he knows when they go out.

I don't know what to think. I found SEVEN of those seeds in my yard this morning. They were all in the flower beds/in the corners of the yard where there are big plants. All of them had the skin off. I have not seen any squirrels .. no clue what is doing this. Maybe opossums?? UGH This is totally freaking me out...I cannot possibly cover every single inch of my yard. I have a fence up by the one corner .. guess I need to put one up in the other. *sigh*

That sounds like a ticking time bomb to me... even when the seeds are gone from the trees, there's no telling how long they'll just be laying around.

Just thinking, maybe talk to an arborist, maybe they can treat the trees to make them non-fertile (non seed producing)?
