New my pup to ER for severe GI upset I took my little pup to the vet last night for severe tummy upset. I work as a nurse and didn't get home until almost 8pm. The minute I walked in the door, I could tell my little guy was so sick, he couldn't even get up enough energy to lick me hello like he usually does. He had been vomiting a few times while I was at work and like I said, the minute I got home and saw how sick he was, I took him to the Vet ER. First off, I wanted a tummy xray to make sure he didn't have anything unusual in his tummy cause this little guy gets into EVERYTHING. Even as much effort as we put in to making sure things are up off the floor, he still manages to get a hold of something. Anyway, the vet was wanting to run over $600 in diagnostics like parvo, pancratitis, etc. I just let her do the xray only and she said there was nothing in his tummy that she could see. So she gave him pepcid, nausea med, antibiotic and a fluid bolus underneath his subq tissue. He woke up still sick this morming but he is just abuot back to his original self. I guess I'll never know what happened, I've told my family to NEVER feed him any sort of people food. Oh, how I wish I knew what made him so sick. He was like a sick baby, he was whining and crying. I have learned how special these pups are. just like babies. But thank you to Little Road 24 hour Animal Clinic in Alrin |
How old is your little one? Could his bloodsugar of gotten to low? Tiny ones need to be fed 3 or 4 times a day in small amounts. I am in FtW as well. There are two other 24hr clinics in the area. One is on Hulen close to Central Market and the other one is on 30 between Cherry Lane and LasVegas Trail (my personal preference). Hope your little one continues to improve. |
I would suggest you never let that baby run around unsupervised, especially since he gets into everything...they all do that! You should have him secured in a small area....playpen, utility foom, bathroom, etc, with his pee pads, his food and water, he bed and some toys for when you are not home. You didnt say how old he is or if he has started his vaccinations.... |
You did right by taking him to the vet asap. He may have ingested something poisonous. Check your house for household plants as well. Many people don't know they are toxic. I've been doing this over 15 years and I've heard and learned much. There are numerous reasons he could have been vomiting but thankfully he's ok. Never use any cleaner with the last three letters sol either. For example pinesol, lysol. Sub is great for hydration. |
I don't understand why you did not do blood work. Usually that is done before an xray. Yorkies are highly prone to pancreatitis....and I always have blood work done with a dog that is vomiting a lot. Yes, they would probably still treat almost the same BUT sometimes pancreatitis is so severe in these little ones that IV fluids and hospitalization is necessary. You might want to read the following thread. It gets into a discussion about pancreatitis and it's dangers. As we discussed on that thread, it is SO important to be careful what your pup gets in to. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-back-vet.html Hope he is doing better! |

I didn't do the blood work because I was going by the order of priority that the vet recommended and she first recommended the xray. I could have done the blood work as well and paid the full $600 in diagnostic work. But once she saw the tummy was distended, she treated with success. He was okay by the next evening. I'll never know what made him so sick though. My husband said he gave him a couple of cheerios which I bought to use as treats for training as read here on yorkie talk that this was a good treat used for training and/or teaching tricks. I had given him a couple of cheerios before with never a problem so I don't think this is what caused his tummy upset. He is okay now, Thank God. |

He's doing great, thank you for asking. |

I have had to start mixing wet food with his dry food that I give him in order for him to eat better. I have been feeding him Blue Buffalo dog food but he is so finicky with any dry food. I have tried so many brands and he seems to like this best but won't eat good. My point is, I've heard to mix with Little Ceasars wet food. So today I was mixing a little wet food with his dry food and found a HUGE piece of some kind of animal skin. It was totally GROSS. It seems like any meat humans eat has to be better than what I found in this Little Ceasars Dog Food. So I must ask you all. What is the best wet food to feed my baby. I do on occasion feel and hear his little tummy gurgling, especially today when I took him to the vet to get his final shots. I thought to myself, man, this little guy must have a very sensitive tummy. I didn't realize this about these dogs. |

So glad your baby is feeling better. If I feed any food (meat) at all, that is people's food, I stick to boiled chicken. Breast without the skin. Boil it and divide into little packets, because I have four, and freeze it until you are ready to feed. You might have to put his in a food processor or chopper if he is real young. It doesn't take much to fill these little baby's tummy up. I am terrible at over feeding mine. Changing foods can really mess their little tummies up too if you are not careful. I feed Blue Buffalo too. Canned and dry. |

I know places like pet smart have that refrigerated food that seems a lot better, It's called Fresh Pet. I forgot about that. I use to feed that to my pompom occasionally. Now, I'm really paranoid about pancreatitis. Now that I think about it, we had a lot of rain and had some wild mushroom growing in our back yard. When I would take him out, he would try to eat them. I had to pull them all up and throw them over the fence but he may have ingested some before I got to him in time. I'm really thinking that may be what got my little guy sick. But in the mean time, I'm throwing away little cesars crap and need to email that company about that horrible chunk of fat I found. Completely NASTY! |
Sometimes they get a "bug" just like us. But...I really don't like Little Ceasar dog food..imo. If he is having a "gurgling tummy" something is bothering him. When it comes to feeding there are many pasionate opinions. You will have to do your research and come to your own opinion. I The two factors that really influenced me are: The many recalls of some dog food companies... yes dogs have become very ill and even died from contaimated food. The ingredients... the use of low quality fillers such as corn and even chicken by products..yuck Last ...but no way least... the source of the protein. What animals they use, sick animals? I have seen some reports that say they do. I will only buy from a company that uses "human grade protein" I feed fromm, my dd feeds her puppy blue buffalo. I also homecook which is a total different story. Good luck |
WOW- I went through this same ordeal with my Logan about a month ago. He was vomiting and had blood in his stool, acting lethargic, etc. So of course we went into panic mode and went to the 24 hour Emergency Vet... bloodwork, x-rays, just like you. They couldn't find anything wrong! The ER vet said at some point while he was on his walk he must have snarfed something up that we didn't see... a dead bird, garbage, something. She injected some fluids and that seemed to revive him. She gave us a few cans of prescription food for g/i issues and we had him on a "bland" diet for a few days...half-n-half VERY LEAN (95/5) boiled hamburger and rice. He ate that like he'd never seen food and rebounded 100%. We had to slowly switch him back to his usual kibble, but he was back to his usual (hyperactive) personality. It was a really scary ordeal and you're right, they're just like little babies- you just never know. Keep us posted!!! |
I am so glad your pup is back to normal |
Be very careful about lawn mushrooms, my breeder lost one her hers to that. Her others got really sick. I think its trial and error with them all. They are all different. Jess eats royal canin, turkey bits or boiled chicken, cheese. Occasional carrot or romaine lettuce and blue buffalo bites. Cheerios too. Bully sticks made her sick as did egg whites. |

He is 4 months old. He had all but his last vaccine the day he got sick, but two days ago, I took him to get the final vaccine including the rabies vaccine. Oh, he didn't like that too much. Thank you for the advice. :) |

I also remember when I was outside trying to potty train him, we recently had a lot of rain and there were wild mushrooms every where. I just started yanking them out of the ground and throwing them over the fence after I caught him chewing on one, because I don't know if these things are poisonious or not. I caught him chewing on one and yelled out at him NO. I don't know how much of it he ate, not much I don't think. Thank you for the advice. Can you tell me about what you use to bathe them with? I thought about using Johnson's baby shampoo. He's still a little too young for the groomer, I think. He gets really dirty around his mouth so I need something safe cause he licks when I wash him there. |

I didn't know Fruitables made supplements! We got a bag of the treats once, but our American Eskimo wanted NO part of it... LOL... I think he could tell it was "health food" - Our Yorkie didn't mind them, though. I wonder if the supplements would go over better... hmmm... |

It was beef. And it had been coated with flour and fried. DH gave her the piece. :(. Boiled or baked chicken is fine. If your baby is prone to tummy issues the vet might recommend Science Diet I/D. There are other brands but I know nothing about them. I feed Rosie the I/D and I also home cook for her. I have a recipe from Petdiets. My girls love the homecooking!! And you control what they are being fed. :) |
My yorkie ate a whole ice cream waffle cone ( no ice cream in it ). She jumped on a chair by the dining room table and then jumped on the table( first time). She seemed fine She sleeps with me and just woke me up at 5:30AM throwing up a little yellow stuff. I can hear her tummy rumbling .Now she is sleeping but I wonder can a waffle cone poison her? |
I wouldn't think so, but I don't know. I would call the vet just to be sure. |
