My 16 week old Baby has Parvo I hate for this to be my first post but, I'm scared. I've had dogs my whole life and have always had them neutered, up to date on shots, heart worm and feed them good quality food. This is my first Yorkie. I got her from a breeder. She was vaccinated. Before I got her and three times since. Most recently this past Saturday 6/1/13. She was still too small for Rabies and I had not had her spayed yet. She's my first girl too. She got diarrhea Monday and then last night she started vomiting. I took her immediately to my vet. They said they have to keep her at least three days. It's expensive ad you all know. I called and the vet said she hasn't vomited, has eaten some food and is wagging her tail. Is that a good sign? I've got other dogs too. Know I've got to clean, clean and clean some more. I've been told to use Virkon and HealthGard for the laundry. Any comments would be appreciate. |
Great job on getting her to the vet! They'll likely keep her hydrated well and be able to treat the virus. Her behavior sounds very encouraging so use the time she's away to clean; don't forget to treat the yard if she was outside too. The breeder should be notified so that any littermates/other dogs can be checked out. There is hope. My daughter has a mixed breed (bigger dog) that was given 20% chance of survival because she couldn't afford hospitalization for him at the time. He lived, mainly because the dr treated the parvo and she kept him hydrated afterward. I'm sure others will comment too but I wanted to say good luck with her & welcome to yt! Glad you found us even under difficult conditions. Be sure to check out the other foruns (up top, left side of page). Oh yea...what's her name? |
Keep us updated |
Hi and welcome to YT. I am sorry that is has to be under such devastating circumstances. I also found YT for the first time when I first got Buster Brown and he was very ill as well. I wish I help with your Parvo questions but I really don't know. I just wanted to send hugs to you and prayers for your little girl. Best wishes for a successful recovery for your Yorkie. |
I don't have any answers to your questions regarding parvo, but I am sure others will be here before long that will. There is a wealth of information here at YT. I just wanted to let you know I am praying for your little yorkie. |
Sending prayers that your baby will be okay. Do you mind telling us how old your puppy is? The breeder may have started her shots to young and if so she would not have been protected. |

My Noah had parvo at 8 weeks. Hydration and antibiotics are key. Parvo can't be treated itself, but it causes infections that will need to be treated. Parvo is an intestinal virus. As the body tries to shed the virus, it sloughs off the intestinal lining as well and this can cause intestinal matter to leak out into the puppies body and cause sepsis and infection. Hydration, hydration, hydration. I can't stress that enough!! IV fluids are best, subcutaneous can help, an are less expensive but are not as good as IV. Anti nausea medicine will help too. Know it can get costly!! It cost us upwards of 7500.00 to keep Noah alive. I went everyday I could and sat with him and talked to him and tucked him in my shirt and danced with him.... Skin to skin contact works for preemie babies, so I tried it with him. Insist on a probiotic and blood counts. Watch the white blood cells. If needed, do a transfusion. Pray long and hard about this because like I said, it can get expensive to treat. You have to be committed to the care and treatment as well as the cost. I had 24 hour ICU vet care. You need to treat your house is you have other dogs, as well as your yard with bleach. Keep any other dogs away from your dog until the virus is shed (2-4 weeks). Message me if you need to. |
I am so sorry your little one has parvo, and will pray that he recovers. There was a recent thread about a member who had 2 pups with parvo, and they survived. There is a lot of good information shared in that thread, and one thing is the importance of keeping your pup away from grass, dirt, pet stores, etc. where they can get parvo for well beyond their last vaccinations. Here is the link: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ved-parvo.html |
I am so sorry that your little one has parvo we will all be praying for her. My heart goes out to you at this time. I can't imagine how hard it must be to be going through this when you should be enjoying the arrival of a new puppy. |
Thoughts and prayers for you and your baby! Do take care of your other pups like others have mentioned. Keep us posted. |

Michele, I was under the impression that bleach will not kill the virus. Is that true? |

There are other things you can buy from the Vet that will kill it, but bleach is cheaper and easier to get in a pinch. |
Thanks so much for your advice, words of encouragement but, definitely your prayers. The vet said she ate alittle 5 times yesterday and drank some water. She had perked up and was walking around alittle, responding to her name and waging her lil tail. Today the vet says she had some diarrhea overnight but, no vomiting. She said she also did not eat anything. She's still on IV and antibiotics and they're going to try some can food today. She's also still active. I'm Leslie and you guys rock. |
It's great to hear your little girl is responding and her little tail is wagging. I LOVE their little happy tail wags, nothing cuter. Sending prayers for her continued recovery. |
Oh I'm so involved with worrying about my baby I didn't tell you her name. Her name is Mag and she's a fighter. |
I was told that even bleach wouldn't kill the virus, also. Going to research now. Thanks, Michele! OP, I'm so glad to hear that Mag is responding. Praying she whips Parvo's butt!! Okay, per ASPCA ( http://www.aspcapro.org/canine-parvovirus.php ) : Fortunately for shelters, regular household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is one of the most inexpensive means of neutralizing parvovirus. It should be diluted 1 part bleach to 32 parts water (or 4 ounces of bleach to a gallon of water) to make it safe to use around animals yet still be effective. Unfortunately, many quaternary ammonium products commonly used in shelters such as Parvosol, Kennel Sol or A33 are labeled as parvocidal, but multiple studies over the past several years have proven they are not very effective. Another parvocidal disinfectant is potassium peroxymonosulfate or Trifectant®. It is readily available to shelters and has been proven to be parvocidal. Three advantages of Trifectant over bleach are that 1) it has better activity in the presence of organic material and 2) it does not have to be prepared fresh daily like bleach and 3) it is less corrosive to metal surfaces or mucus membranes than bleach. Whichever disinfectant is used, the surface must be clean before the disinfectant is applied, and it should remain in contact for 10 minutes before rinsing. |
I guess the question comes into play of why they say bleach "neutralizes" and Trifectant is "parvocidal". What is the difference? Not sure. Sorry OP, didn't meant to steer away from Mag. Go Fight that Parvo, Mag!! |

Bleaching the floors, walls, bedding, etc can't hurt. I still clean with bleach. My first post 2 years ago was about Noah having parvo. We were leaving to go on vacation and Allie and Noah were going with us after a quick vet appointment. We made it 20 minutes down the road when he started seizing. Needless to say, I had to leave him at the vet the first 4 days because my vacation stuff was non refundable. My mom and daughter visited him until I got back, and I called the vets office 3 times a day for updates. He took a turn for the worse and the vet thought she was going to have to have "the talk" with me but I refused to believe he wasn't going to make it, and that's when I started making sure I was hand feeding him beechnut baby food, the probiotics sprinkled on, skin to fur contact, etc. He's got the most gorgeous coat of all 3 of my dogs, and you'd never know he was a parvo baby (although he lacks a few social skills that I think he missed out on from being in a cage for 10 days). He's a little neurotic when it comes to food dishes (he can't stand to see the bottom of his dish) and will bark and bark and bark until you come fill it lol. He loves my husband and will curl up by him and just sit for hours gazing at him.... Prayers and thoughts that your baby will make it through. I know your heartache!! |
