Maggie is sick Maggie went in for dental on Friday, she had a small tooth on the top, front removed. The vet said it was loose and it was best to remove it. He sent her three doses of Ketofen syrup to be taken the next three days. She was fine until Sunday evening when she started throwing up brown bile that looked like it small sticks in it. I caught her playing in the mulch and eating it earlier. She threw up several times and finally settled down. DH took her to the vet yesterday and she got Sub-Q Fluids, injection of Cerenia, and an injection of Buprenorphine. She was sent home with three vials of Buprenorphine. She was drugged all yesterday evening. She hasn't eaten or drank anything since yesterday, DH said she drank some water right after they returned from the vet. She won't lay down, almost like her stomach hurts, her poo is still somewhat runny. She sits and looks back at her butt. If she's not better when the vet opens, she will go back. Meanwhile, does anyone have any suggestions?? |
Hoping and praying she does well at the vet's. So sorry this is happening to her and you and DH. Sounds like she may have a blockage or a partial blockage. Praying it's not... |
So sorry. Hope she is better soon. It sounds like something in the mulch that she ate maybe? |
Jeanie, I am sorry to hear Miss Maggie is sick. :( Is she doing any better this morning? Praying for her. |
[QUOTE=Maximo;4206333]Jeanie, I am sorry to hear Miss Maggie is sick. :( Is she doing any better this morning? Praying for her.[/QUOTE She isn't any better. I went to work to get my work laptop so I could work from home. She was sitting when I left, she was sitting when I got back, and she's still sitting. She didn't meet me at the door when I got back home. I noticed she peed on the steps that lead to the bed, that is not like her at all. I'm waiting for 9:00 then I'm heading to the vet's office. |
Katy Yorkie, I suggest you take some of the mulch with you when you go to the vet. There is a type of mulch that can be bad for dogs. I think it's the red colored mulch but not sure. I just remember reading an article on Yahoo about it. Hope the vet can find out what is bothering her. |
She could possibly have a sliver of mulch that is stuck/blocking her intestine....I would get her to a vet...ER vet....immediately for abdominal xrays. She needs to be rehydrated again if she is not drinking...This really needs to be checked ASAP....if she has a stick that has obstructed her bowel, or possibly maybe even perforated her bowel, this can deteriorate quickly, especially if bowel content has leaked into her abdominal cavity. I would insist on an abdominal xray, for my own piece of mind, if nothing else!.....I have done that before. (I forgot today is not the weekend, so I recommended the ER vet!-sorry) |
prayers for maggie..i hope they find out what is bothering her. |

Praying for Maggie |
Oh I am so sorry that Maggie is not feeling her best. Sending warm hugs and prayers for a quick recovery!! |
isnt there a mulch that is actually made from coco or something that you are suppose to keep your pets away from, because it is posinous? I could be wrong but I swear I read it on a forum. IM really sorry your furbaby is sick. Hoping she feels better soon. I know how hard it is to watch them be so ill. :( |
Been running with sick pups today and did not see this. I do hope Maggie is ok.... |
First time I have been on today. I hope that Maggie is ok. The mulch around our trees is red,THAT may be leaving. Please let us know what the vet says. |
Update on Maggie The vet has diagnosed Maggie with Giardia. He thinks it's related to the mulch, she eats it every chance she gets. Over the last two days he's done almost every test that can possibly be done. He sent her home with Panacur and Metronidazole (he also sent the same meds for Buster). She doesn't have a blockage, I was thinking this was the case since she wouldn't lay down. She still has diarrhea and is not eating. I tried hand feeding her some boiled chicken and rice but she ate very little. I haven't seen her drink any water. She went outside a few minutes ago and started eating grass (little girl gets sassy when she doesn't get to eat the grass and the mulch). The vet did say to let her eat anything she wants other than the mulch and the grass, which is what she wants to eat. |
Does she like green beans? So glad she's not blocked! |
I pray the meds help Maggie recover quickly. It's frustrating when these little ones want to eat things that are bad for them, especially when you offer good food to them. Max managed to dip his face in fresh, finely ground mulch last year, ugh. Hoping Miss Maggie will drink and eat tonight so that you don't have to worry as much. |
Green beans, cooked carrots, pasta, egg, dry toast, you can dip toast in chic broth,. When Mina refuses to eat and NOTHING else will work I giver her baby meats. They come in tiny jars (chic, turkey, beef) make sure that there is NO onion powder in it. |
Thanks Kristin....I've offered chicken & rice, plain chicken, pumpkin...ok, so not really a buffet but it looks like one when it's all lined up in little bowls. I've put kibble down as well. She wants grass, aargh! We don't have the red mulch or the real black mulch, but it all smells bad. Maggie is sneaky, she will go around the yard until she thinks she's found a place where she can't be seen. She hides in the shrubs and will almost not breath if she thinks she can't be found. Tell Max he's way too handsome to be sticking that gorgeous face in a pile of mulch! |
Same goes for Miss Maggie -- too adorable to be messing with mulch. She doesn't need the fiber in a lot of potential treats, but maybe something like greens beans, eggs, sweet potato, parmesan cheese would spur her appetite -- if she doesn't have any other diet restrictions that would rule these out. Teddy is a little booger and won't touch rice or pasta, even when it is soaked in broth. |

Oh, thank goodness she is ok. As for the mulch and grass, I don't know what to say...I have battled that one myself. I swear the more you try to stop it, the more they want it. |
After reading your thread earlier today,I informed DH that we would be removing the red mulch from the back yard. It can go anywhere else but the fenced in area is for the dogs and small children. |
Praying Miss Maggie is feeling better today and that she is eating and drinking. |
