Restless, Running Around, Biting her butt for days PLEASE HELP
 

HI There,
My rescue yorkie has been displaying some very alarming symptoms since Thursday. She cannot sit still, runs really fast around the house bites at her butt and invisible things near her face, and pants a lot probably because shes running 24 hours a day. I took her to the vet and they said her anal glads were full so they expressed them and she was ok for about a day or so. Then returned to the same disturbing behavior. I called the doctor again on Saturday and he advised me to give her a quarter of a baby aspirin twice daily because maybe she was experiencing some pain from the expression. It calmed her down for just one day and last night she started back up. We only got about two hours of sleep because she was going nuts all night. Finally I got her to lay down in her bed for a couple hours. I took her BACK to the vet this morning and they said her glands are clear. There is no physical evidence of something going on. They said her body looks great. That maybe she was having allergies to something and is itchy and thats why shes biting back there or maybe it's neurological. They sent me home with Temaril-P and said to start it on Friday because the aspirin needs to get out of her system. Has anyone had this happen before? She is 5 yrs old and about 4lbs.

I dont know what to do. I feel so bad that I cant help her and shes not well.

So sorry your little rescue is having problems. I was going to suggest anal glands but see you have already taken her in and they were checked and expressed. Sending prayers that you find out what the problem is and it can be resolved.

So, the vet is saying it takes 5 days for the aspirin to clear out of her system? That's a long time to wait in my opinion. Wow!

how long have you had her? i hope she is feeling better real soon. im just wondering if she is new to your home if she is stressed out? have you tried crating her or creating a safe place for her..just a thought. sometimes when lola is stressed or she thinks shes back in her crate nightmare days (i believe she was crated almost all of her first 5 years) she will run in circles non stop. i have to distract her and we created a safe space for her (her stroller) and that helps. wishing you the best and do not be afraid to see another vet if you think they are not taking this seriously.

I'd be trying another vet. This dog sounds miserable. Could have something else going on in her pelvis, bladder, have worms or has a tumor, etc., besides the anal sacs. I'd be getting a full work-up and even x-rays. This could be bad pain or a bad itching. A vet needs to get her relief with pain medication or steroids or something. You sound miserable. Get her a second opinion with a respected vet and let them get a diagnosis, then treat.

Find a Vet. that will find the cause. I had two fosters (at different times) doing the exact same things, one had short little stiff hairs sticking his rectum due to a fresh hair cut from a groomer before I got him, and the second one had a type of cyst (or something) on the inside of the rectum close to the outside that itched horribly bad. Itching that severe can't be cured with an aspirin. Maybe either a dermatologist or an internal specialist should take a look and get some relief for that poor baby.

ask the vet if the dog can have benadryl. That kind of calms them and cures the itching. Jess is 5llbs and takes 2.5-3ml twice a day during allergy itchy time..

I've had her since Sept/Oct time. I dont think she's stressed from the move anymore. She's been pretty normal for awhile now....
They told me to wait until friday to be super safe bc she told me that it could cause internal bleeding or something like that if they mix...?? that's why im scared to even give benadryl or any med
I'm currently in the process of getting a second opinion. I've reached out to a friend who has a dog to see if she likes her vet. I dont know how else to find a good vet near me :(
The cyst thing never even occurred to me. I just get so nervous cause my other pup Bindi had liver shunt and had pacing and nightly seizures so I freaked out. I just want her back to normal stat!

I can imagine both you and your little one are about to blow after this much suffering. I'm so glad to hear that she seems better but by all means keep pressing if she starts biting her butt, etc., again. Hopefully the medicine is working for her and this will now stop for good. Poor little thing. You sound so stressed. I hope you can relax soon.

I think word of mouth is a good way to go to find a good vet. You could also call your local Emergency Vet clinics and see what vets they refer to - often they know who is good in the community. If you have a local Yorkshire Terrier Club, their president or secretary should be able to give you some vet referrals.

That's an excellent idea! I can call the emergency animal hospital i took Bindi to years back. They were the ones who diagnosed her with liver shunt when my vet at the time was taking advantage of me. I'll see who they refer. I really like my current vet but I'd like to make sure every avenue is taken care to minimize the time spent suffering. I work full time. My mom is spending the day with both my pups today. I'm glad she lives not too far. I cant really leave her alone right now.

Good luck. I'll bet you're a nervous wreck trying to work with her home with your mom and not you but she'd call you if there were bad problems happening. Hopefully that baby is feeling better. It would be a good idea to get a second vet lined up just in case you do need a second opinion or your vet is closed sometime. Sometimes a second set of eyes makes a big difference.

LOL. So true. Those little guys sure get jealous if the other gets a lot of attention!

From your description, to me it sounds like something is hurting her. The panting can be a sign of pain. I hope you are able to figure things out, it sounds like she is really uncomfortable. :(

This sounds like exactly like what Mimi went through http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-idk-what.html. 1 was impacted, pasty stuff coming out & the other was full, no infections, but was diagnosed as anal gland sacculitis aka inflammation of the anal glands. There's a laser therapy which has very good results or an anti-inflammatory shot. It took her 2 days to fully recover & she wasn't trying to bite her butt or keep looking back & running around w/her tail tucked under & licking the air. I thought it was something neurological too!
If your's is not showing signs of discomfort anymore, I would stop the meds if you haven't already. Hope she'll be ok!

oh I am so sorry that you are going through this with your little one. It must be so upsetting to see her uncomfortable and not be able to help her. I will be praying you get some answers soon.

When an anal gland problem starts, and they get expressed, they can fill back up in a day or two and need expressing again. Can take 3 or more expressions in a week, but as the problem resolves, the glands will start working on their own, and won't overfill as fast. Sometimes a little Panalog up the butt (just to the very inside, like 1/8 - 1/4 inch) will help with any infection. Also antibiotics and increased fiber in the diet (green beans, pumpkin).

Thank you for your reply. When she was at the vet yesterday I guess they checked them and they said they were empty. She has very little appetite as well :( and not many teeth. Pumpkin is high in fiber as well? Is this the canned stuff? I've never bought pumpkin. Green beans I can do.

What is Panalog?

Plain canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie mix) is high in fiber.

I also have used Preparation H topically, it helps soothe and reduce swelling.

Update:
So shes relatively ok if you put her under a blanket and sit next to her. Otherwise shes running around biting towards her butt (she never actually gets it but bites in it's direction)and panting and wanting water. Once she starts running its hard to get her back under the blanket...

I have that medicine that I mentioned earlier that I can start on Friday...but Friday seems so far away! I got another vet rec but its about an hour from my home.

I don't see any swelling :(

You really have to know how to express those anal glands. I hope some technician didn't squeeze too hard or hurt her. It happens. I would take her to another vet and find out what the problem is. In the meantime what if you soak her rear in warm water. I would try that to see if it helps her.

SO I called my rescue and told them what was going on and they referred me to their vet that they trust completely and saw is wonderful. I have an appt at 3pm with her. So hopefully I know what's going on today!!!! thank you all for your support.

They did blood work and her white blood cell count was high
So they put her on an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic.....
Also did a fecal and rechecked her anal glands. she said one was erally inflamed and still had some to be expressed. I hope this cures it all :-/
