Mimi is in discomfort & IDK what it is! I made an appt for the vet @ 5:20pm, it's 11:50am now...I expressed Mimi's anal gland last night bc she kept looking back @ her bum, stuff only came out on 1 side. Could the other side be impacted & it's bothering her? I felt around the gland areas & it's not swollen or anything, can't feel anything once I expressed it. I always express her anals once or twice a week b4 her bath, my vet showed me how. Lately, it's been less, maybe once every 2 weeks. I try to be very gentle & use the 'milking' method when I express...I am so worried that I could've hurt her somehow, IDk how I can wait til 5:20! She's panting on & off (sign of pain?:() keeps reaching & looking @ her bum. Pacing, her tail to one side, flicking her tongue in & out & gnawing on her paws...I also gave them their 1st application of Advantix II on Sun (4/21), could she be allergic to it (we switched from frontline plus)? Right now, she's resting on my lap. Please say a prayer for my baby girl, Thank you! |
I 4got to mention that I also switched their kibble to grain free Fromm surf & turf about 2 days ago. She's been having that only for dinner & is it a coincidence that she started gnawing on her paws & having anal gland issues? |
Poor Mimi. Hope she gets to feeling better soon. Sounds like her bum is bothering her for some reason. But I don't have a clue what it could be. As for the Advantix I would think that a reaction would have happened within the first 24 hours. Hang in there, I'll say a little prayer for you and Mimi both that you will have an answer and relief soon. Keep us posted. |

She's eating, pooping fine & not vomiting, so I guess that's a good sign. I'm just so worried that I pinched a nerve or something when I was lifting up her tail to express her anal glands...something back there is obviously bothering her! |
I am so sorry that your baby is ill. Mina was not feeling well yesterday and I had to wait 6hrs before her apt. I just rocked her and if I had to do something my DD would rock her. I do hope that it is something that can be found quickly and helped. I know that it is going to be a long day. Have you tried applying a warm damp compress to Mimi's bottom? It might ease the discomfort. |

Never thought about that, if she will allow it, that I would think help ease her discomfort. |

It does sound as if her bum is hurting. I've heard that if you express the glands manually you have to keep it up because they don't do it themselves as well after that - and that the body kind of "forgets" to do it itself and can lead to chronically sluggish anals and even impactions. As a normally self-regulating gland, the anal normally takes care of that itself in a healthy dog. When I first got Tibbe, his anals filled up about 3 times in a row but eventually that stopped as he got regulated as to diet and much more exercise and he rarely scoots or bites at his rear since. So we don't routinely express his anals now and he's been doing well. I hope that you vet can get little Mimi diagnosed, treat her and get her feeling good again. I'll be praying there is nothing like an impaction or infection going on. |
When my human kids feel bad, stomach, constipation, itchy, anything, a nice warm bath does wonders. Maybe she will sit in a warm bath for a bit. Baths are very soothing... |

It is so funny when it is bath time around here Micah & Yogi find a hiding place along with Rose :) |
Oh no. I'm so sorry Mimi is in discomfort right now. I am wondering if the food switch is causing her some itchiness down there or something. I probably wouldn't give her a bath, but maybe place a warm, moist washcloth on her bum area? I know it is hard to wait, but it is good they are getting you in today. Hang in there! You are doing all you can do. She knows her mommy loves her. Prayers for Mimi!! |

Dolly runs and hides under the bed when she see me getting out the stuff I use for her bath, but once we get started she likes her bath. Silly girl |
I hope Mimi is ok. I will keep her in my prayers. |
I'm sorry - it's so frustrating when you don't know exactly what is wrong. This sounds very similar to what we went thru with my dads dog, Buddy. Here was the thread- http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...oting-etc.html To be honest, we never figured it out. He hasn't done it in a while. So I guess we'll just see when it happens again. :( |
Hope Mimi is feeling better. |
I am hoping for an update on Mimi. I hope that she is better. |
Praying for Mimi that she is feeling better and that all went well at your vet visit. |
Mimi had to have her anal glands emptied via finger insertion! Anal gland (1 on the left side) was full (I mentioned earlier that only 1 side came out when I expressed it) & the right side was not full, but it was very pasty. The vet also said her licking the air was a sign of nausea & Mimi was salivating a little too, so she was prescribed some pepcid. The vet also said they have a laser treatment to heal the irritated anal area & reduce inflammation. It needs to be done twice a week for 2 weeks (or was it 1 week?) & then once a week there after. Ea/treatment is $35 & she said they've had positive results. I passed on this procedure, want to see if she'll be ok & if she doesn't improve, then we'll have to do it...maybe. I'll have to research it as I've never heard of it b4 & don't want to jump into it. Anyone heard about this laser treatment? She's still looking back @ her bum & is acting agitated.:( Apparently, Mimi has lost all muscle movement there to release anything on her own...she never scoots, I never saw her do that, she'll let me know that it needs to be expressed by licking there. I guess expressing them from the outside was not good enough. There's no infection from what the vet can see but we did a full blood test & urinalysis just in case. Will have the results tomorrow after 2pm. Thank you everyone for your good wishes & prayers! Mimi is gonna take a bath tomorrow, they put some stinky perfumey spray on her butt & I had to rinse it off. Will keep you updated on her test results. |
Oh bless her heart. I seem to recall hearing about some sort of treatment like what you are talking about, but I for the life of me can't remember what I heard and where. I am with you..I would just stay on top of it manually unless it gets worse..and research it. I am curious now so I'll probably do some looking. If I find anything worth while, I will post it here for you and everyone. I'm sure all of that is just still affecting her bum. She'll probably quit being so aggitated in a day or so. Great job getting her in there like you did!! |
TY Terri, I hope she'll be ok too...I can't help but still worry! I found this article & therapy laser treatment is also used to help arthritis...very interesting: A Case Study: Putting Shine on Titan?s Golden Years |
Another, wow laser therapy is even used to help feline asthma, pancreatitis & IBD! Veterinary Practice – News-December 2012-Comp : More Laser Therapy Case Reports but not so good for the dog anal gland sacculitis: This treatment was remarkably successful in the first week but was continued over two weeks in an attempt to delay recurrence. I don't think Mimi has anal gland sacculitis (this is something I need to read up on), vet didn't say it was...the laser therapy is to just help reduce inflammation & irritation. Don't think she'll need it, but will see how she does in the next few days. Vet wants to see her again if she doesn't show improvement in 7 days. |
So glad Mimi got some relief. I'm so happy it was not more serious than it could have been. Keep us posted. |
Good & Bad news...Mimi's complete blood work & urinalysis all came back in normal range but vet suspects that Mimi has anal gland sacculitis.:( Vet wants Mimi to come in & have the laser therapy treatment or get an anti-inflammatory shot. I won't be able to take her in til Sat, so will see how she does tomorrow. It's still bothering her & she keeps looking back & putting her tail to the left. She's also licking the air a lot & I think it has to w/her behind bothering her. Other than that, she's still got a good appetite, going to the bathroom normally & loving her evening walk! Anyone have experience w/anal gland sacculitis? |
Well, now you've got a diagnosis and treatment, I'll be Mimi is going to feel better soon and then get some more treatment even. I'm glad to hear there is some way to help her and make her feel better. |
i have to info to offer but wishing mimi success with the laser and hoping it brings her comfort. keeping her in my thoughts. |
I'm so sorry to hear that Mimi is not feeling well. Do you have a heating pad? If so, you can put a wet cloth inside the pocket and let her sit/sleep on it at the lowest setting. That might help to soothe her bum! I pray she gets some relief very soon!! |
