Help! My baby is very ill, running out of time, thoughts, and options! I am a mother to a 2 yr/6 mo, 4lb 2oz male yorkie named Dozer. Though he has only been in my life since October when I rescued him, he IS my ENTIRE life, and I am just beside myself with worry because the last week has been horrifying. Where do I begin. When I adopted Doz, he was a happy, healthy- though somewhat timid, little guy. My first vet (I say first, because after countless trips to this vet with no diagnosis to what was going on, I was forced to seek an alternate opinion) gave him a completely clean bill of health, and sent us on our way. Doz had a minor reaction to a flea bite (somewhat expected, and had a steroid shot in November), and then an allergic reaction to Vectra Flea and Tick (another steroid shot, and on our way.) Then, once a month, about every three weeks, he began getting diarrhea, since mid-November. We would return to the vet, they would change his food, and put him on four days of Metronidazole, and send him home. This month was different. Tuesday started another round of explosive diarrhea, and not only was I sick of seeing my baby sick once a month, with no proven answer, but when I called this first vet, they told me they wouldnt see him until the next day. I switched vets, and the new vet brought him right in. Immediately, she believed me that something huge is going on with my baby, though was unsure what it was. She drew blood, and sent me home with two different stomach anti-acids for Dozer, to await the blood results. Tuesday Evening- Dozer throws up blood, and has raspberry-jam like collitus. Back to the vet we go. She does an xray, gives him fluids, and finds that his blood results are normal, and his xray results show inflammation throughout his intestinal track. Sends us home with three weeks worth of metronidazole 30mg 2x day, plus the 2 antiacids, and a special diet food change (Iams intestinal Dry food only). Last night- Dozer was restless, then slept from 2 am until about 7, to which I had to wake him and he COILD NOT STAND UP. No motor ability in his hind end, what-so-ever. I am so scared. We rushed back to the vet, she has no clue what is wrong. She said maybe Addisons disease, maybe electrolytes. I am so worried. I am sitting back at home, shaking, crying, upset, needing answers, support, encouraging words, anything! Please, has anybody else gone through this? I must also mention, he is now down to 3 pounds, 3 oz. |
Help! My baby is so sick, I am so scared My Yorkie has been so sick all week, and seems to have taken a turn for the worse. He has struggled with GI problems about once a month, I switched to a new vet this week due to not getting any answers with my last vet. Basically my week has gone like this: Dozer is a 4.2 lb neutered Male, whom I rescued in October. Tuesday, began the diarrhea. Wednesday, we went to the vet. She drew bloodwork, sent us home with two meds- anti-acid based to coat his stomach to await the blood work on Thursday. Wed night- Dozer vomited blood, and had a raspberry like collitus, and had been presenting to me in a foward "bowing" position throughout the night. Very restless. Thursday early AM- We went straight back to the vet where he was x-rayed and given fluids. (He stayed all day long) He was put on Metronitozole 30mg for 3 weeks. xray showed inflammation throughout his digestive track. He was also switched to a new food, Iams Veterinary digestive dry food only. And continued on the other two meds. He ate his food, had a little more energy at home, especially before bed. Seemed somewhat normal before bed. Thursday Night- Slept, but would get up to pace, then pretty much slept in a tight little ball up by my neck (which he never does) from 2 am till about 7. Usually he is up, swatting me, wanting FOOD. He was listless. I tried to get him excited, but nothing. I tried to get him to stand, he fell over. Again, nothing. Tried to put him on the floor, and again, he fell over. he lost COMPLETE motion of his hind legs. HELP. We RUSHED back to the vet. He has lost complete mobility in his hind legs. Has ANYONE seen this. Does ANYONE have suggestions, support, ideas, ANYTHING? Im sitting at home, crying, shaking, worried. I dont know what to do, I see horror stories on the internet, and then I see miracles, but I dont want to get my hopes up too much. Im just beside myself. He was just a happy, perfectly little prancy puppy on Monday. I just want my baby back :(. Last n |
I am praying for you and Dozer. Could this be a reaction to any medication he has been on? I hope and pray the vet will find answers for you and get Dozer well. |
Have any of these vets did bloodwork |
It seems like you are spinning your wheels with these vets. Have you considered going to a vet school or specialist. It just seems like there is more going on than intestinal problems if he is losing mobility. |
Do you have a vet school nearby? Maybe your current vet could refer you? Im hoping some experienced yorkie members will see this and post. Will be praying for you and Dozer! |
Do you have a Vet school close by? If so, I would take Dozier right away to them. Your regular vet doesn't seem to be able to diagnose and may not be familiar with all the problems Yorkies can have. Your baby needs tests run (did they not check for Addison's when they did the blood work?) and a specialist - whether it be a nutritionist and/or a neurologist. The nervous system is now being attacked. In Alabama, we have Auburn Vet School. In TX, there is Texas A&M. Do you have one in your state? ETA: I just saw the 2 posts above mine (sorry I type slow). But all of us are telling you - vet school..asap |
Do you have a veterinary college or university near you? It sounds like your baby needs more than guessing. He needs more advanced tests that your vets cannot provide. Do an internet search or call your vet and ask for a more advanced clinic for your little one to go to. Too many pets have been lost because a vet is too slow to get an animal to a more advanced clinic for a proper diagnosis. |
Also...can you post another in the emergency or sickness section? Im afraid some with knowledge may miss it in the general section. |
Hi! I'm so sorry to hear of your struggle. Nothing worse than having a baby that can't tell you what's wrong. I would also suggest taking him to a vet school or specialist and very soon. Dozer is in need of some serious help. I'm sending prayers that you find the right person to help little Dozer!! |

Also, I'm sure she is trying really hard to respond to us but you know that delay on posts for newbies - this is the sort of time that it drives me nuts. OP - Just know we are all praying for Dozer! |

Thanks Terri....I didn't even think of that!!! |
Many prayers going out for Dozer. Do you have a Vet Specialist or Vet School near you that you can take himto? |
I am so sorry about little Dozer. Good advice though. Go to a vet school ASAP. The bleeding can't be something to mess with. I had a vet that was going to cure Kayla of CT. Yeah right?? He gave her and if I am not mistaken, it sounds like the same med. little Dozer was given. She threw up blood and had the mucos bloody potty. Scared the life out of me. Took her to my own vet and was better in a couple of days. Please get help for this baby. Sounds like the vets are doing more harm than good. Praying for him and you. I know how hard it is to have a little sick one. God bless. |
