Worried about my Chewbacca after his neuter
 
So I had Chewbacca neutered today. His scrotum area is swollen and red and angry looking. The doctor thought maybe his blood wasn't coagulating so they ran blood tests and everything came back normal. I don't know how to attach a pic but I will try. The vet said it would be okay but she didn't even know why it did it. I'm super sad and he hates me now :(

Well I can't get the pic to upload but if anyone has experienced anything like this or wants to see I can email it

I don't know about neuter stitches but it doesn't sound normal. I would see another vet if it looks as bad tomorrow or sooner if it looks worse. I hope he feels better.

This happened to one of my boys many years ago. I ended up taking him to the EC because he was in pain. I think that they gave him an antibiotic and anti-inflamatory,but this was 16yrs ago. I do remember it taking a while for him to heal. If it is really bothering you,you think it looks worse or he is running a fever I would take him to the EC. Hopfully someone else will come along with some other information for you.

Oh wow that does that pretty nasty. I would certainly watch him very close tonight and if he starts having problems get him into an ER Vet. But most certainly take back to the Vet tomorrow.

Did they give you any pain medication for him?

:thumbup: Yes!! Watch him very close tonight, I would get him back in ASAP... poor little guy- looks painful. I will be sending good thoughts and prayers for your Chewie!

I do have pain medication for him although he is letting me touch it and push on it and he is not crying or whining at all. But I will continue to give him his doses of pain meds. It doesn't seem to hurt him. So I am hoping it isn't anything besides him being a easy bruiser. I am keeping a very close eye on him and hopefully it won't require anything more. I just don't know why it happened. :(

The thing is the vet sent him home like that :/. I have never had a problem with this vet and everyone raves about how great they are.

Then someone had said "That sounds almost like a hematoma. It's not a huge deal in itself... It's basically a bruise that doesn't stop bruising and causes a blood-filled sac to form under the skin. If left untreated it can cause problems.

I might go in for a recheck. In the meantime, if you can apply a cold pack a few times a day it will help swelling and bruising go down, hematoma or not."

OMG! That does not look good. I hope she's right but if it doesn't look better in the morning I'd be at the vets office the minute they open tomorrow. I've never seen anything like that on any of my dogs that have been neutered or spayed. Poor Chewbacca, I hope it looks worse than it feels.

Poor boy! If you don't end up going to the ER tonight, I would definitely have him seen first thing in the morning. Max had a little bruising from trying to stretch, but nothing like that.

Keeping Chewbacca in my thoughts tonight.

Ya I felt a little better for you too, but as you said you still need to watch him. Hopefully it looks better in the morning!!

It just looks very bruised. I would keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, get to the vet. That is good that you are medicating him...poor baby. :(

It does look a little better this morning. He does not like his cone on his head at all. But he is in good spirits and has ate and went to the bathroom this morning. Hopefully we will stay on this track.

Oh no, poor boy! That looks painful! I would keep the cone off of him unless you are not able to be with him. How is it looking now? The picture you posted looks very painful...

Poor little mite, he must wonder what happened to him. :-((
It looks nasty and I am sure it hurts; so glad he cannot see it. I guess there is a lot of blood in that area to leak out and that is why it looks so bad?
So happy he is feeling better today and is eating etc again. The cone is not nice but should not have to be on for long.
Get well soon sweet Chewy, and don't worry - all will be OK Mom!

Hope Chewbacca continues to improve quickly. Since that looks like a hematoma, be aware that as it resolves and resorbs, it may get to looking worse before it looks better. Gravity always wins, so that blood that is now contained will spread out as the scrotum flattens back out and Chewy will probably end up with bruising down his inner back legs. This will not indicate any new bleeding ir injury, just that blood spreading out. I would just watch for any signs of increased pain, heat or drainage at the area and get him rechecked quickly if any of those occur. :)
