Dex licked himself raw! What the heck! Suddenly Dexter licked a spot near his butt, hind leg raw! I mean licked the hair off fast. I don't see anything tho. It's red from licking and hairless now. But no rash, no bite mark that I can see. He's eating, active and fine otherwise. I put antibiotic cream on it and his diaper. Anything else I. Can do? Benedryl maybe? |
Call you vet and just keep him from going back after it, with a kiss collar or whatever necessary. Poor guy - just got going on a hot or in pain there or somewhere or getting OCD. Any other symptoms at all - anything else different. Doc needs to be sure his anals are okay and he's not got hip arthritis or something going on inside that's really hurting him, too. |
This morning I noticed he was walking to me and his butt was angled down. Hhhhmmmmm but he went out, ran around, ate, was fine. I went to work. He was fine when I got home. Went to the gym, the grocery store and home. He was fine. I sat on the couch to eat dinner and he sat with me. He started licking. I didn't realize for 20 mins or so, I stopped him. After a little bit I thought about it and said I wanted to look at it. That's when I saw how red and raw it was. Ugh! |
Can you post a pic? |
I'll try to tomorrow. I put an antibiotic cream on it and a diaper to cover it. I don't want to undo that now, but I'll try to tomorrow! Sorry! |
Poor guy, something must be going on... When my two lick their bums, I get their anal glands expressed, but this doesn't sound like an anal gland problem. |
He could be in pain and tomorrow he could try biting the area and not just licking. A hurting dog will sometimes really nibble, then bite the area quite a lot and cause quite a bit of damage if the problem is internal pain in the area. I'd run him by the vet before leaving him unattended with this problem. |
DH is home tomorrow. If this keeps up he will bring him to the vet. Going to leave his diaper on too. But yes he will get vet care if it worsens by tomorrow. There is just NO sign of anything yet except his licking it raw! |
How close to his tail is it? And is it on his rear end or on the side of his hip/leg? |

It's actually on his tail, sideways to his hind quarter. Not really around the 'hole', but close. The underside of his tail. I'll try to post a pic! |
1 Attachment(s) Pic is kind of dark. It looks worse than it is in real life. I just gave him 2mls of children's benedryl and put gold bond medicated powder on it and his diaper back on. We'll see what the morning brings. He's not a happy camper right now! My poor baby! I guess it is closer to his butt than I thought. |
Could it be an anal abscess? When Nikki had one it was on the side of his little butt. Hope it clears up quickly. |
I guess DHS will take him tomorrow! |
I sure hope he's not in a lot of pain, poor little guy. Glad he'll get some help tomorrow. Maybe this time tomorrow night he'll be on his way to feeling way better. |
That looks like a possible abcessed anal gland. Get him seen before it ruptures... ruptures require surgery. |
No real change this morning. Less red and irritated, but as soon as we took the diaper off he tried to lick again. There is no swelling at all. The anus looks fine. Skin looks fine now that its not freshly raw and angry looking. I don't get it. Since he's still going after the area, DH is going to bring him into the vet today. |
10am appt... I'll keep you all posted! |
Praying for good results at the vet.... |
My grand dog had a similar problem after grooming and the groomer shaved his little bum. For some reason that time it really bothered him and he licked and licked and got an infection, which then needed antibotics to clear up. Hope everything goes well and glad you caught it early. |
Keep us updated |

DH just got back from the vet. Its nothing. Skin irritation. Allergies the vet thinks. Im so glad it's not his glands, vet checked that and said they were empty. I'm waiting for DH to tell me if the vet said to do anything specific for him so he does not get more irritated or infected from licking. Poor Dex (and his mama) we are both allergy infested! :( |
That's good... hope he feels better soon! |
He hopefully has some ideas for how to keep this kind of reaction from amping up again and I'm so interested to know what he suggests. Hope this was a one-timer and you can keep him off it while it heals. Keep us updated and hope it doesn't turn out to be more. Good news so far! |

What I am suspicious about is Taste of the Wild dog food. They were on it for 6 years. Maybe 5. Then in Oct/Nov 2012 it got recalled. Came back in Dec/Jan and I went back to it. Since then, Dex has had 2 ear infections, Fletch had one and now this skin irritations and they are licking their paws, which they never did before. They are constantly licking. Fletch licks the couch and my pant leg until I stop him. I was so happy with Taste of the Wild. But I may need to transition them to something else at this point. I need some equivalent good food ideas for them. The vet ONLY recommends Science Diet, which Im not opposed to, but I just want to make sure from all you experts, is there anything else I should try. I don't want my poor boy on Benedryl (which is what the vet recommended) every single day. |
Sending well wishes for Dex. I am very happy to hear that his glands are fine. Do Dex and Fletcher have any known allergies to specific ingredients? I have had my boys on Fromm's Chicken a la Veg for 3 years and haven't had a problem. No recalls from the company so far, long history in business, they test all of their food. They have other flavors too. The only one I would stay away from is the Salmon. Some dogs react to the Salmon. |
